Stampin’ Up! Hey, Chick Sneak Peek and Some Hexagons Wire

Mornin’!  Well, the big day is here!  My Russian “son” arrives tonight!  Late, since he’s coming international… 🙁  But that’s okay, I’ll make some cards to stay awake.

Or I’ll still be making his bed back up and trying to wrap Christmas gifts.  Maybe even still vacuuming the floor.  If “last minute” was an Olympic sport, I’d have medalled several times over!

Finn had a breakthrough today.  He discovered….The Pond!  Who knew you could actually drink out of it??!  Before today, it was just a source for nibbling on really nasty mud right by the edge.  That was fun, cuz it made mom holler!

But, now he knows it’s for drinking!  I suspect that come summer he’ll figure out it’s a great swimming spot!  It’s fun watching him “discover” new things that seem so every-day to us!  Buck was sort of born an “old soul” – seemed he just knew things from the git-go.  But this little guy still has much to learn!

Oh – and in other news, he destroyed a catnip pouch.  The cats’ catnip pouch.  He did it ever so quietly.  And then looked at me like he couldn’t quite understand why I’d take the tattered and soggy remains away from him. 🙂

So – today’s card is just a fun little silly one – using the cute chickens from the Sale-A-Bration stamp set called Hey, Chick!  This is one you’ll be able to get for free when you spend $50 during Sale-A-Bration.  Which starts on 4 Jan.  I added some…”chicken wire”….using the Hexagons Dynamic TIEF.  Take a look-see:

My layout was loosely inspired by the sketch from the Sunday Stamps Challenge this week:

ssc142-sketch
And – I think we can agree that this is sooooo not a Christmas card, so I played along at the Stamp Ink Paper challenge, too.

So, I’d seen a card the other day that created a chicken wire look using the soon-to-be-released Hexagons Dynamic TIEF and I wanted to do something similar.  But I got the idea to use Vellum Card Stock.  I brayered Early Espresso onto the embossing side of the folder, laid in a piece of Vellum card stock and ran it thru the Big Shot.  I’d planned to use the embossed side, but decided that it looked more like chicken wire on the de-bossed side, so that’s what I used!

To make the card front, I did some more masking.  First I made a couple of Sticky Note masks with the two large chickens in the Hey, Chick stamp set.  I just stamped them on a few sticky notes and fussy cut them.  Then I just started stamping and masking – stamping the chickens in Chocolate Chip ink.

Then I colored them all.  I went with crazy colors – these are….make-believe chickens, okay?!? – coloring them with Stampin’ Write Markers in Crushed Curry, Tangerine Tango. Cherry Cobbler, Melon Mambo and Mint Macaron.  I wanted bold, vibrant colors so that they’d show well once they were behind the Vellum.

The last chicken to be added to the pile was the crazy-hair chicken – my favorite!  I colored his…hair??…with Island Indigo, Marina Mist and Bermuda Bay.  His body is in a lovely shade of Wisteria Wonder.  All the chickens got Peekaboo Peach legs and beaks!

It seems to me that Crazy Hair would be a sort of frenetic kind of chicken – prone to saying hey-hey-hey-hey-hey-hey-hey!!  All boing-y and stuff!  So…I used my same blue Markers to ink just the word “hey” from the sentiment stamp in Hey, Chick and stamped it all around his head.  Just for fun, I used a Crushed Curry Stampin’ Write Marker to make little star/asterisks around his head, too.

I tore the embossed Vellum in a “v” and then used Glue Dots under each corner to adhere it to my chicken coop panel.  Over each Glue Dot, I stuck one of the new (it’s in the Urban Underground Suite in the 2017 Occasions catalog) Urban Underground Embellishments.  Then I SNAILd the panel to a Marina Mist mat and the card front was done.

On the inside, I stamped the complete sentiment from Hey, Chick in Island Indigo on a Very Vanilla panel.   Then I added Crazy Hair in Chocolate Chip and colored him with more Stampin’ Write Markers in the same colors I’d used on the front.

I SNAILd the panel to a Marina Mist mat and into my Island Indigo card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done! 🙂

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got a reprise of the Hey, Chick Crazy Hair and Crushed Curry “stars” on the front…

…and for the flap, I brayered the Hexagons Dynamic TIEF with Early Espresso and lightly – lightly! – laid the flap into the TIEF and closed it.  That gave me a faint “chicken wire” image, with some interesting gaps…

Et Voila!  I love this goofy little Hey, Chick stamp set – especially Crazy Hair.  In a way it kind of “gives us permission” to be silly and have fun with it, don’t you think?  Hope you like – and will be figuring out how to get this one for yourself come Sale-A-Bration time! 🙂

Oh my, your card is adorable! I love that new folder and I love how you used it. Great card! Merry Christmas. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.

  2. Kate Stockman

I love this stamp set! Your card is so CUTE, would have liked to have seen the card without the vellum(so I could see your crazy colored chicks better). I check your blog daily –great cards, plus your adventures with Finn are entertaining.

    • Sorry about that, Kate! I’m so used to just doing finished photos (except for tutorials!) that I didn’t even think about an in-progress pic! Thanks so much! 🙂

  3. That’s awesome Mary! Love your crazy chicken peeking over the fence. The colors are just perfect! And too funny on the catnip…love how dogs turn their head away and chew very slowly on things that they aren’t supposed to have. As though doing that while sitting next to you will go unnoticed. Ha! 😉

    • Yes – he was right in the middle of the living room. Just laying there like a furry angel. And busily (and quietly!) destroying the catnip bag! Thanks, Amy! 🙂

  4. Mom

    Interesting card.
Interested Finn. Guess if you would drink from the pond you would drink most anything. Catnip…hmmm.

  5. Cute and crazy card! Love the chickens and their “chicken wire” 🙂

  6. Ellie Peckler

What a fun and funny card, Mary. Can you explain who your Russian son is? – Ellie

    • Thanks much, Ellie. It’s one of my favorites!! Sure – Igor lived with us for a year about 20 years back. He was here as an exchange student. He wanted to graduate from an American High School. So that’s what he did. We haven’t seen him since he left. I’m sure excited for his visit!!! Thank you for asking, Ellie! 😊

  7. Mary, this is just too adorable! I LOVE these Chickens and the use of the hexagon embossing folder to mimic the chicken wire is genus! Thanks so much for joining us at Stamp, Ink, Paper for our Anything but Christmas Challenge!

  8. Love your chickens and use of the hexagon embossing folder and hex nuts to give the card a fun masculine feel. The use of “negative space” is a great way to interpret this week’s sketch. Thank you for joining us at Sunday Stamps this week.

  9. Love the vellum embossed overlay here, great idea Mary. Thanks so much for joining us this week at Stamp, Ink, Paper. Carolyn xx
