Good morning on the last day of August!  Which is an important date….

Why?

Cuz there’s a few things coming to an end that you’re going to want to jump on.

  1. The Color Your Season Bundle won’t be available after today!
  2. The Watercolor Pencils – Set 2 may very well NOT be available after today!
  3. This is the last day to earn Bonus Coupons to spend starting tomorrow – or, if you’re anxiously waiting for the 2018 Holiday Catalog…to hang on to until next week on the 5th!
  4. Finally – this is the LAST DAY to earn TRIPLE PEPPERMINT POINTS from me by purchasing the aforementioned Color Your Seasons Bundle!  Folks are getting this great bundle and racking up Peppermints while they do it (remember – when you earn 16 – you get a Peppermint Reward of…anything of your choice up to $40 from me!).  If you don’t know about my Punkin’ Head Rewards Program – check it out right here.  And then…head over to my Online Store and order your Color Your Seasons Bundle!  Remember – you have to purchase the BUNDLE to get the Triple Peppermints!  And this Ordering Special ends tonight!

Okay – now.  On to our card for today!

I decided to play with some of the goodies in the Tropical Chic suite (in the Annual Catalog!).  I especially love the colors – pinks and greens – of the Tropical Escape DSP.  Take a look-see:

I didn’t come up with this layout on my own, I borrowed it from the sketch challenge at The Paper Players.

And the inspiration photo from Hand Stamped Sentiments helped me pick my theme!

I started with a piece of Whisper White card stock, that I embossed in the new Subtle Dynamic TIEF.  Then I adhered it with Liquid Glue to the front of my Shaded Spruce card base.

Next up is a piece of Tropical Escape DSP that I cut in strips and adhered to a Basic Black mat.  I cut a single panel of the DSP and then cut it into strips.  Each strip is adhered with Liquid Glue (giving me some time to wiggle them around and get them aligned/spaced just right).

I stamped the Tropical Chic sentiment in Shaded Spruce on a strip of Whisper White and snipped a banner into one end.  Then I edged it with my Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Write Marker.

I cut some leaves with the Tropical Thinlits from Granny Apple Green and Shaded Spruce.   I adhered a couple to the card front with Liquid Glue, then used a Glue Dot to adhere a few loops of Linen Thread – then popped the sentiment over all of that with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I adhered the rest of the leaves with Liquid Glue.  Then I added a Tropical Element button with a Glue Dot.  And, because….why not!?…I tied a Linen Thread Billie-bow and added it with a final Glue Dot.

I used my Dark Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Blend to color a few Pearl Basic Jewels and tucked them in amongst the leaves and Linen Thread – and the card front was done!

On the inside, I repeated the Subtle Dynamic TIEF on another Whisper White panel and adhered it inside the Shaded Spruce card base with Liquid Glue.  On another Whisper White panel, I stamped a leaf from Tropical Chic in stamped-off-once Granny Apple Green.  Over the top of that, I added a Tropical Chic sentiment in Shaded Spruce.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Basic Black mat and then onto the embossed panel, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got a couple of Tropical Chic leaves in Granny Apple Green and Shaded Spruce, and a flower in Petal Pink…

…and added a little more of the Tropical Escape DSP to the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  Petal Pink, Granny Apple Green, Shaded Spruce and Black!  What a perfect color combination – which means the Tropical Escape DSP is just the best.  And – it’s a perfect accompaniment to the Tropical Chic stamp set and bundled Tropical Thinlits!  Hope you like! 🙂

Don’t miss out on all the Last-Call specials today, okay?!? 🙂

Finn Fan Fix

Have I ever told you guys that we have a lot of wheeled vehicles?  And tracked vehicles?  We’re a farm – so we’ve got too many trucks, too many skid-steers, too many…eveything (well – until I need Wayne to do something construction-y and then we have JUST the right number! LOL).

Anywho…Wayne is a Master-Parker.  By which I mean…he can, without expending any undo effort, park one of the aforementioned wheeled/tracked vehicles Right.  Smack.  In.  The.  Middle.  Of…fill-in-the-blank.  There is always and forever some vehicle of some sort IN MY WAY!

And, y’all – it’s not like there’s not plenty of space to park them that would NOT be IN MY WAY!  Really.  There’s room.

It’s just sort of his thing.

Finn appears to be “his father’s son”.

As if he had thumbs, a ruler, a protractor and a laser-level…he can (and does!) find the EXACT spot to lay Right. Smack.  In.  The.  Middle.  Of…fill-in-the-blank.  Basically IN MY WAY.

Case in point.

See the precise positioning?

Perfectly poised bewtixt the stove and the frig.  While I’m making dinner.

A chip off the ole block, he is.

I’m sure he thinks he’s helping… 😉

Stampin’ Up! Lacy Tricks and Tweets for the Happy Inkin’ Thursday Blog Hop

Happy Thursday, y’all – and welcome to another Happy Inkin’ Thursday Blog Hop!! Today’s a sketch challenge – and I suspect you’re going to see a lot of 2018 Holiday Catalog sneak peeks.  So…I hope you’ll check out everyone’s projects when you’re done here!

I pulled out a cute little stamp set I just HAD to order when I was in California and then never opened and inked!  It’s the adorable Trick or Tweet set and it’s a fun take on Halloween.   I love it with some new Toil & Trouble DSP and a little boost from the Spooky Sweets set.  Take a look-see:

And here’s the sketch!

I started with some Granny Apple Green (is this not just the BEST green!?!) paper from the new Toil & Trouble DSP, matted on Basci Black for the card front.

Then I took a smaller panel of Basic Black and cut the edge with the wonderful Delicate Lace Edgelits.

I cut a smaller piece of Whisper White and, in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink, stamped the so-cute elephant from the Trick or Tweet set.  And she needed to be holding a jack-o-lantern snack bucket, too.  So I added that as well!

I used my new Light and Dark Basic Black Stampin’ Blends (these are in the 2018 Holiday Catalog) to color her.  I also used both of my Pumpkin Pie Blends for the snack bucket. And she’s rocking Granny Apple Green wings, a mask and…in a surfeit of accessorizing coordination – Granny Apple Green toenails! 🙂  I just love that we’re getting more and more fun colors in the Stampin’ Blends, don’t you?? 🙂

I pulled out the Spooky Sweets stamp set (also in the new Holiday Catalog – coming live to you next week!) and added some spooky Granny Apple Green “mist” with the splatter stamp.  I inked the stamp and stamped-if-off-once before I stamped the panel each time.

Then I used Liquid Glue to adhere it to the die cut Basic Black panel and popped it onto the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The sentiment, from Trick or Tweet, is stamped in Tuxedo Black on Granny Apple Green card stock and punched with the Classic Label Punch.  It’s adhered with Liquid Glue.

I used my Bow Easy to tie a double-loop bow from the new Black 3/8″ Glittered Organdy Ribbon and adhered it with a Glue Dot.  Then I colored some Pearl Basic Jewels with my Dark Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blend and added them to finish off the card front!

On the inside, I added a second sentiment – this one from the Spooky Sweets set – in Tuxedo Black to a Whisper White panel.  Around the edges, I added stamped-off-once “mist” in Granny Apple Green.  Then I added some full-strength “mist”, too.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Basic Black mat and into my Pumpkin Pie card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got more Spooky Sweets mist in both stamped-off-once and full-strength Granny Apple Green on the front…

…and on the back, I added a veritable miasma of mist – and some more of the Toil & Trouble DSP to the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  Look at that face!  Pretty hard to be too awfully scared of her – or any of her friends in the Trick or Tweet stamp set, isn’t it?  And the Spooky Sweets bundle – with it’s scary Spooky Bats Punch – is a lot of fun, too!  I hope you like!

Now that you’ve seen my card, take a minute to hop thru all our projects today  If you click on the Next Blog button, you’ll go right to Kristi’s page. And you can just click on the names below to go direct to all the blogs!

Stampin’ Up! Blended Seasons Sorry for Everything!

Happy Happy Haawwmp Day, y’all!  The week is going quickly – and next week we’ve got a Holiday!!  Whoo-hoo!

And…something else is happening next week…

What is it…

It’s right on the tip of my tongue…

Hmmm…

Well – it’ll come to me I’m sure! 🙂

One thing I DO remember is that the cool Color Your Season promotion is ending this week -like…DAY AFTER TOMORROW!  That’s right, after Friday, you will NOT be able to pick up the lovely Blended Seasons stamp set and coordinating Stitched Seasons Framelits.  So…tarry not, okay?  Here’s a link right to them in my Online Store!

In fact, I’m so sure that you NEED this set that – for the next two days ONLY – everyone who orders the Color Your Seasons Bundle will get TRIPLE PEPPERMINT POINTS!

Remember – this is only good thru the end of the day on Friday, 31 Aug AND you MUST order the BUNDLE to get the TRIPLE PEPPERMINTS! Got it!?

Now – today’s card is a sympathy card for a friend who lost her old dog this past Sunday. 🙁

I used the Blended Seasons stamp set as well as the Sorry For Everything set from the Annual Catalog, plus a few other fun goodies.  Take a look-see:

The layout for this card was based on this week’s Sunday Stamps sketch challenge.

And the color scheme comes from the Global Design Project challenge.

I’d wanted to use the Blended Seasons set today and, after seeing the pretty card that GDP Guest Designer Holley Smith made, I knew just what to make!

I started with a piece of Very Vanilla card stock and, using my Stamparatus, stamped the Tree Rings background image in Soft Suede.  Then I used a Sponge Dauber to sponge the edges in more Soft Suede.  I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Soft Suede mat.

The next layer is a piece of paper from the Garden Impressions DSP (yes, I know that’s Crushed Curry – it’s called artistic license…..hello?!) matted on Soft Suede and adhered to the card front with Liquid Glue.

My angled piece is yet another piece of Soft Suede that I cut to fit exactly on the angle depicted in the sketch, then I embossed it in the Corrugated Dynamic TIEF (coming next week in the….that’s IT!!  The 2018 Holiday Catalog goes LIVE next week on the 5th!!).  Once I sponged it with Soft Suede, I decided I wanted torn edges – so I tore the edges – then used Tear & Tape Adhesive to adhere it to the card front.

And then the fun began!

I stamped the pretty Blended Seasons leaves image on Whisper White, twice, in Soft Suede ink.  Then I used my Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Blends – both Light and Dark – and my Flirty Flamingo Light Blend – to color all the leaves.  I used my Soft Suede Light Blend for the little stems.  Then I fussy cut all the leaves!

My sentiment is from Sorry For Everything – it’s actually three separate images in the set – all stamped in Soft Suede on Very Vanilla.  I lightly flicked the edges of the sentiment with Soft Suede ink using a Sponge Dauber.  I used the same dauber to lightly sponge a Flirty Flamingo Colored Doily (just to tone it down a smidge).  That I adhered next with a little Liquid Glue.

I put some Stampin’ Dimensionals on the back of my sentiment and used them to wind a few loops of Linen Thread.

I added a few of the leaves to the card front with Liquid Glue, then popped the sentiment on with the Dimensionals.  Then I added the rest of the leaves with Liquid Glue or Liquid Glue and Mini Dimensionals.

I tied a Linen Thread Double-Loop Billie Bow and tucked it under the corner of the sentiment with a Glue Dot, added a few Pearl Basic Jewels and the card front was done!

On the inside, I simply stamped and colored the leaves from the Blended Seasons stamp set in Soft Suede, Daffodil Delight and Flirty Flamingo on a Very Vanilla panel.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Soft Suede mat and into my Thick Very Vanilla card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got another set of Blended Season leaves on the front (don’t forget to slide a piece of plastic or something into the envelope to keep the Stampin’ Blends from bleeding thru to the back)…

…and I added a bit more of the Garden Impressions DSP on the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  This Blended Season stamp set has such gorgeous images in it – I particularly love these leaves!  And the matching Stitched Seasons Framelits feature some really cool inside AND outside stitching!  And – this card would work as a general sympathy card (not necessarily just for someone who’s lost a fur-child) – thanks to the wonderful sentiment in the Sorry For Everything stamp set.  I hope you like!

I also hope that – if you haven’t already – you’ll add this bundle to your tool box.  And earn those Triple Peppermint Rewards!!  Hurry quick!

Finn Fan Fix

I suppose I’ve mentioned – a time or two! – that Finny likes to nap.

He likes to play and run and roughhouse, too -but…he really likes to nap. 🙂

Which works out pretty well for us (me in particular!).  I can set at my craft table or my work computer and do what I need to do.

And he…just finds a cool spot – in front of the A/C register or the fan in the bedroom…and sleeps the afternoon away.

After a couple of hours he wakes up and comes over to wherever I’m sitting.

Probably needs to go out.

But – I like to think that he ALSO wants a little Mom-lovin’!  So – I give it to him!

And take a couple of us-ies!!  Please disregard my hair.  And lack of make-up.  Wasn’t ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille! 😉

Mom’s do the most embarrassing things!! 🙂

Stampin’ Up! Joyous Dashing Deer Sneak Peek Fun Fold!

Good morning, my peeps!

Well – I made a dent in my crafting spot yesterday.  Sorta got distracted by alphabetizing all my stamps and getting them back in their spot.  And rainbow-izing my Stampin’ Blends.

Don’t judge – these are very important organizing necessities!

And – with it all organized (for a half-a-second!) I can get back to card making! 🙂

Fortunately, I made a card last week before I left Cali – so…here we go!  I’m using the pretty new Dashing Deer bundle in the 2018 Holiday Catalog and I made it into an Easel Fun Fold card!  Take a look-see:

Stampin’ Up! Many Blessings Merry Christmas

Merry Monday, y’all!

Oxymoron much, Mare?!? 😉

Sorry to have missed you guys last night – but will be back in the swing of things next week.  Promise!

I made a quick and simple little number for you today – using the pretty new Many Blessings stamp set from the 2018 Holiday Catalog.  Take a look-see:

The layout for this one came from the sketch side of this week’s Fusion challenge!

And the colors come from the FabFriday color challenge – although I hadn’t taken any Calypso Coral with me to Cali – so I substituted Grapefruit Grove!

I started with a piece of Whisper White card stock and, in Call Me Clover ink, stamped the wreath image from Many Blessings – letting it hang off the edge of the panel to create the sketch shape.  I used my Lemon Lime Twist Stampin’ Write Marker to fill in the leaves.

Then I added berries in Poppy Parade.

With my Grapefruit Grove, I stamped the little corner image – also from Many Blessings – in the three corners.  I added a little Call Me Clover with my Stampin’ Write Marker, and then adhered some small dots from the new Santa’s Workshop Enamel Shapes (in the 2018 Holiday Catalog – and a FREE gift from me for ordering one of my I Want It All Catalog Shares!).

Then I adhered the panel to a Lemon Lime Twist mat with Liquid Glue.

I inked part of the Many Blessing sentiment in Poppy Parade and half in Grapefruit Grove (pretty easy since this is a photopolymer stamp set) and stamped it on a piece of Whisper White.  Then I cut it with the label die from the Stitched Labels Framelits (2018-2019 Annual Catalog).

I popped the sentiment on with a couple of Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Finally, I tied a little bow from Grapefruit Grove Nature’s Twine and adhered it with a dab of Liquid Glue to complete the card front!

On the inside, I repeated the Many Blessings corner flourishes in Grapefruit Grove, Call Me Clover and Poppy Parade Santa’s Workshop Enamel Shapes.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Lemon Lime Twist mat and into my Poppy Parade card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got a repeat of the Many Blessings flourishes on the front…

…and I added the wreath to the envelope flap!

Et Voila!  I love this Many Blessings set – it’s got such lovely images and sentiments covering Fall and Christmas!  Hope you like!

Check out Many Blessings on page 46 of your Holiday Catalog!

What?  Don’t have one?  Give me a shout and I’ll get one in the mail to you ASAP! 🙂

Finn Fan Fix

Well – we’re back! 🙂

Did I tell you I got up early on Saturday morning and went downstairs to their fitness center?  At 3:30??!  And yes, walked/jogged on the treadmill for 45 minutes.

I felt pretty righteous, really.

Until about 7pm – then I simply…crashed! LOL!

I was missing my treadmill from the hotel on Sunday.

Yeah.  Weird, I know.

But – while the treadmill is sort of no-brainer….and easy….it’s missing an important component!

Pantaloonies! 🙂

My little furry Finn-Mill!

Stampin’ Up! Home Again to Finn!

Hey guys!  First post back in Atlanta – and it’s a “no card – no sneak peek” post, so sorry.   And it’s a double-whammy of bad news – alas, no video tonight, either.  My craft spot is just as bad as I remembered and I just can’t get it together for a video.  I’ll do better next week, I promise! 🙁

Man – is it nice to be home!  Had a great flight – the upgrade to First Class was worth every single dime!  Watched Book Club – new-ish movie with Diane Keaton, Mary Steenbergen, Candace Bergen and Jane Fonda.  Have you seen it??  I really enjoyed it – fun plot, good dialogue.  And Don Johnson.  And Andy Garcia.  Neither are hard on the eyes and they did a good job.  It needs to go on your need-to-see list!

Wayne and Finn picked me up as usual – and the ride home was…Finn-centric (also as usual!).

I was finally able to get one decent picture – Smile, Finn!

Apparently, although he’s been getting bones and pets from his Dad, they don’t stack up to Mom-Loves!

Nor does his Dad wear a lot of lotion.

And Finn LOVES him some lotion!

After he stopped just being loved on – he spent the rest of the ride home licking every reachable spot he could find – cuz I DO use lotion! 😉

Also – I’m sure he just LOOOOOOVES me! 😉

He did finally settle back to his normal Finn position in the van…

It was lovely to see all the green – a person does get sort of “grass/green/tree” starved in the desert of California!

Once we got the suitcase inside and in the bedroom (please notice I did NOT say unpacked!)…I was treated to an old favorite…

Yes indeed.  Very very nice to be home!

I’ll be back tomorrow with a card – pinky swear! 🙂

Stampin’ Up! Swirls & Curls and a Beautiful Blizzard Sneak Peek

Happy Saturday, y’all!  I hope your weekend is going well.  If all goes as planned, this will go live about the time I’m boarding the airplane to head for the house!  Finally!  Can’t wait to get me some wiggle-butt!!

For all of you who didn’t click the “x” yesterday and read and commented on my weight loss post – thank you all so much!  I was rather overwhelmed by the response – and I appreciate y’all more than you know!

As a result of all those nice comments – I went ahead and just copied the post and made it into a page you can go to – so you’ll always have ready access to the tips and the link to Lose It.  Hope it will help!

My card today is a shimmery, non-traditionally-colored Christmas card using goodies that will be available on 5 Sept in the 2018 Holiday Catalog.  I used the new Swirls & Curls TIEF, plus a little Beautiful Blizzard and Merry Christmas Thinlits.  Take a look-see:

The layout for this one comes from this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge.

I started with a piece of Highland Heather card stock and embossed it in the new Swirls & Curls TIEF.  Then I brushed it with some new Frost White Shimmer Paint.  I matted it on a piece of Smoky Slate card stock that I’d ALSO brushed with the Frost White Shimmer Paint.

Check out how shimmery this card really is! 🙂

Wowza!

I tore a little piece of new Chicken Wire Elements off and adhered it to the card front – Silver side up – with Liquid Glue.

For the snowflakes, I first brushed a piece of Whisper White card stock with Frost White and Champagne Shimmer Paint (yea – got a bit of a theme going here!) – then I cut it with the new Blizzard Thinlit die.

I adhered the smaller snowflake to the card front with Liquid Glue.

The sentiment is cut once from Smoky Slate and once from Basic Black card stocks with the new Merry Christmas Thinlits.  I brushed the Basic Black version with Frost White Shimmer Paint, adhered them in a stack (with the shimmery black one on top!) and adhered them to the card front with Liquid Glue.

I popped the last two snowflakes on with Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I added a little bow from Silver & Pink Baker’s Twine and a few silver Metallic Shapes (which, I just now realized – are retired! 🙁  Sorry!  You could use Clear Rhinestone Basic Jewels, too )  – and that was it for the card front!

On the inside, I inked up the swirl image from the Beautiful Blizzard stamp set in Highland Heather, stamped it off once and then stamped a Whisper White panel.  I did that a few times, then added the snowflake image in full-strength Highland Heather.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Smoky Slate mat (that I’d shimmer-ized with Frost White Shimmer Paint) and then into a Powder Pink card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got more Beautiful Blizzard images on the front…

…and I put more Beautiful Blizzard goodness on the back of the envelope, too!

Et Voila!  This color scheme reminds my of my grandparents’ Christmas Tree when I was growing up – flocked white tree, pink and silver decorations!  So – non-traditional, for sure, but…still pretty!  Love the Swirls & Curls TIEF – especially all shimmer-ized!  And the fun Blizzard Thinlit really creates a…well…BLIZZARD of snowflakes with just one cut!  Hope you like!

Stampin’ Up! No Card For You!

Good morning, y’all!  Well – here we are.  The last day in Palmdale, CA for me.  Today I’ll be finishing up packing and getting myself down to LA for my oh-so-early flight tomorrow.  What the heck was in my head when I said “oh yes – a 7:30am flight will be lovely”!?  Sheesh.  It makes ma heid hurt doing the backwards planning to figure out when I have to get up to be there 2 hours ahead.  Might actually be less painful to just not go to bed…

I ask again – what the heck?!?

Given my early get-up, I suspect I’ll “watch a movie” on the way home – hopefully it’ll be one I only sorta care about, since I bet I watch my eyelids more than anything! 😉

So – I’ve told y’all over these past few months that I’ve lost a lot of weight in the past year.  I’ve had many requests for an account of that journey – and I thought I’d take today to go ahead and share it.  Which means – this is not a card post nor is it even card-post-adjacent!  And that means…if you’re not interested please click the little “x” in the corner – and I hope you’ll come back tomorrow when the post WILL be card related!

A lot of folks have asked how I lost the weight I have – it’s 123-125 pounds, by the way (depending on the day!) – since about May 2017.  What I did was pretty no-brainer:  Put fewer calories in my mouth than I burned each day.

Duh?

Can someone tell me why such a freakin’ easy thing to type is just SO.  DARNED.  HARD.  TO.  DO?!?

THE WHY

I’ve pretty much struggled with my weight for most of my life – at least the parts I can remember.  High School.  College.  My whole time in the military – where that was a “BIG DEAL”.  A seriously big deal.

I dreaded going to the doctor cuz…they feel an unreasonable need to put every patient on the scale.  EVERY time – not matter why you go there.

“Hi – I’m here because my elbow hurts”.

“So good to see you – hop right up on the scale”.

“So – came in to see if I should take a vitamin for old people or…”

“We’ll be happy to see you – hop right up on the scale”.

It’s a bit of an obsession for them.

I dreaded cameras.  10 pounds?  Well…maybe.  Or maybe I have TWENTY cameras aimed at me.  Ever notice how few pictures you’d see of me on the blog?  Yep.  That’s why.  It put the awful truth smack in my face and all my chins.  So…I avoided it.

Yes – being fat was definitely a thing for me.  And a cause of much stress and worry.  And embarrassment.  NOTE:  If you struggle with YOUR weight, please know I’m not judging in any way, shape or form.  You should NOT be embarrassed.  That was just a ME thing, okay?? For me – it seemed like it should be easy to lose (like flying or card making or riding my horses) – so I judged MYSELF.

But – it was, apparently, never enough of a thing for me to do something serious and permanent about it.  I’d always go on a diet “one day”.  Start exercising “one of these days”.  It’s HARD to exercise when you’re fat.

Just sayin’.

Even when my Mom lost all her weight – not enough.

So…what was the tipping point?

Well – in the spring of last year – 2017 – I had a physical.  The full monty (literally) with the scale and the blood-work.

Before the labs came back, my mom asked me – as we were talking about health and such – if I knew what my A1C number was.  I had to confess I didn’t and she suggested I should find out cuz I didn’t want to get into the realm of diabetes.

About a week later – the labs returned and I went back to the doc for the follow-up.

She never said a word about it – but…at the top of the lab results sheet it said: “Pre-diabetic”.

I pretty much don’t want to be diabetic, y’all.  Really.  Seriously.

Which meant it was time to do something about it, right?

About the same time, I was getting really really close to having gathered up the points I needed to earn the Alaskan cruise.  I knew I was going to hit it – and that I’d be on a cruise this summer.

And I wanted to look good on the cruise.

Or…at least thin! 😉

So.  That was it.  I decided to get on the stick and do something!

Now – here’s where I stick in the caveat/legal-ese.  I am NOT a doctor.  Nor am I a nutritionist.  So – what worked for me may not work for you.  May not even be healthy for you.  And I’m not telling you this is what you should do.  Check with your doctor.  I am not him/her! Questions??

THE HOW

I considered Weight Watchers (decided not to pay to be told what I already suspected – and…I like to do my weigh-ins under the cover of darkness, not in front of anyone!).

I thought about Nutrisystem or some other special purchase food program – but…no.   Money again.  And also – how would I learn how to eat “regular” food if I’m eating packaged meals the whole time?  Would I have to eat that stuff forever to keep it off?  That didn’t seem right for me, either.

My mom lost her weight by going regularly to a nutritionist and keeping a daily food log/journal.

So…I figured I’d try the same idea.

Without the nutritionist part.

And I wasn’t excited about writing everything down in a little book.  So being at least quasi-technically savvy – I did what all smart phone owners do.  I headed for the Apple App Store.  My search resulted in several hits – but the one that I thought looked the best (and was free) is one called Lose It.

This is a digital food log.  I gave it my current weight and stats like age and height and it told me my target weight.  Which turned out to be pretty close to what the doc wanted me to weigh.  Then it asked me when I wanted to get to that weight.  I used the cruise as my goal date and backed that up a month – just in case I was less successful than I hoped.

The resulting daily calorie allotment appeared – and a place to log my food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  This app is great – it’s got a ginormous data base and that makes it pretty easy to enter what you eat.

And there’s the rub.  I entered everything I ate.  EVERYTHING.  I got brutally honest with myself. No sneaking – no “that doesn’t count cuz I ate it standing up at the counter”.  If I stuck it in my mouth – I logged it.  And I quickly started making decisions based on how many calories I had left for the day.  Which is another cool feature of the app – it logs the food – and does a running tally.  Then it also provides a “how many have you got left” number.

So.  Easy, right?

Well – it actually wasn’t awful.

Not great – but not awful.

I bought a digital scale to begin weighing myself.  I used the weight on my “old” scale as a starting point (it was pretty close to what the doctor’s office weight had been).  Then, I began my bi-weekly weigh in about a month after I started.  I was scared to do it quicker than that – what if I’d gained?  Hadn’t lost a thing after being good for a week?  Two weeks?

I finally decided to pull up my big girl panties and see what was going on.

And – I’d lost 2 or 3 pounds!!  I was amazed.

The app lets you enter your weight – which I did.  And then I did that every two weeks.  I picked Sunday morning – and always weighed myself at the same time – in the same clothes (I picked nekkid, since that was an outfit I could remember! 😉 ).

Once I started to see the weight come off – it got easier to stick to what I was doing.  As I logged lower and lower weights, the Lose It App decremented the number of calories per day I could have and still keep losing (that HAS to happen or…you don’t lose.  The less you weigh, the fewer calories it takes to sustain…so…got to eat fewer).

And a year-and-change later – here we are.

That’s it.  The secret?  Put fewer calories in than you burn.  Done.

EXERCISE

For the first 85 pounds or so, I didn’t “exercise”.  Oh – I took care of the horses and played with Finn (but not excessively and not for “exercise”).  I tried to park a little farther out at the grocery store – take the stairs as it got easier – those kinds of things.  But no “exercise”.

As I started to get lighter – and feel better – I added walking to the agenda.  I purchased an iWatch (a FitBit would do the same) and became competitive with it – I wanted those rings closed every day!  It tracks your movement (translated as calories burned), exercise (based on a number of things like heart rate, etc) – and amount of standing I do.   I even bought a portable stand-up desk thingy so that I could stand up to work at my computer.  Wanting those rings to close each day helped to motivate me to move more.  “Type A much, Mare??”

Also – as I lost weight – things started to get a little (a lot!) saggy in places that I wasn’t loving.  So I figured maybe moving would help.

I dug out my old Suzanne Sommers Thigh Master from the closet – and started using it when I sat in my recliner.  For legs AND for my arms.  No – don’t laugh – it actually does work.  I didn’t count reps – I’d just sit there and squeeze it with my legs or arms while I watched tv.  Unless the cat was in my lap and then I had to stop so I wouldn’t disturb his nap.

Priorities, people, it’s all about priorities! 😉

Do I want that Biscotti in the morning (170 calories) with my coffee or do I want to eat something more filling later?

Do I need chips/taco shells with the mexican dinner?  Or…could I have a little more meat which will fill me up better and for longer?

Do I want a bag of M&Ms – or is buying that pair of jeans two sizes smaller a good enough trade?

Making “right” choices got easier and easier.  And, the more I tracked myself and learned that “I can do this” – I realized that, if I decided to buy the new jeans AND eat the bag of M&M’s, I had the “tools in my kit bag” to get back on track the next day! 🙂

THE BENEFITS

As I started to get thinner – I had to buy new clothes.  It was a powerful motivator, not gonna lie.  I’m now in a size 12.  Which may seem big to many of you reading this – but…it’s a good size for me.  I am happy at the weight I’m at right now.  Any less – and I think maybe I wouldn’t be so pleased with the reflection in the mirror.

I LIKE going to buy clothes!  Heck – I’ve even bought leggings.  To do laundry in, sure – but…I didn’t turn to stone when I looked at myself in the mirror.  And, with the right shirt – I’ve even worn them down to get breakfast or dinner in the lobby.  Where people SEE me!

I do not cringe when I see a picture of myself.  I actually kind of like it – it’s smack in my face what I’ve managed to do!  And I’m pretty proud of that.

EVERYTHING is easier now – standing, walking, taking the stairs.  Here at the hotel I’m on the third floor.  I take the stairs pretty much every single time – even carrying my computer bag.  It adds to my calorie burn each day.  Yesterday morning, I even jogged on the treadmill.  I can’t even tell you what a feat that is for me.  I haven’t comfortably run or jogged since before I broke my leg the first time back in 2004.

And it makes me feel a tad smug! 🙂

I’m actually looking FORWARD to going to the doctor for this year’s physical.  I want to see “good” numbers on the labs.  And my nemesis (the scale) can just pound sand!

I LIKE being thin.  Can’t help it.  For me – it’s just better than the alternative.  And I hope to heaven that helps me keep doing what I need to do to stay here.

So.  That’s the Why and the How.  What follows is a list of random tips.

  • Highly recommend that you get Lose It – or an equivalent.  If you don’t have a Smart Phone – do it online (that picture up above is a handy link for you!).  If none of that appeals – pull out a notebook and a calorie counter and get to logging.  Lose It was a key factor in my weight loss and it will remain on my phone as long as I do – it’s now letting me log to maintain my weight.  If a weigh-in shows a slight gain (ala after the cruise!) – then I log that and it bounces my daily calories down to get back to my goal.  So my plan is to keep logging.  It makes me much more mindful of what (and how much!) I am eating!  Do I get hett if I go over for a day?  Nope.  But I don’t let myself do that EVERY day.  And tracking it helps me to…well…keep track!
  • Buy a food scale.  Keep it out ALWAYS.  I had an old Pampered Chef scale that I pulled out and it stays on my counter.  No more guessing.  “An ounce of cheese is the size of two dice”.  Uhm…I must have big old fuzzy dice!  Deck of cards for meat?  Nope.  Doesn’t work for me. I was dismayed to see what amount of all sorts of food is a “serving” – and how many calories that serving has.  I even bought a new digital scale when I came out to CA.  That’s it weighing my morning yoghurt (vanilla, doctored with freeze-dried coffee and unsweetened cocoa!).

  • Pull out the measuring spoons and measuring cup.  See #1 – it’s the same principal.  You can’t know WHAT food to add to your log without knowing (FOR SURE) how MUCH of it you have.  I even use a measuring spoon for my creamer in my morning coffee.
  • Get familiar with cauliflower rice.  It has become my secret weapon – along with Lean Cuisines Frozen Meals.  The cauli rice doesn’t taste like rice – hello?  It’s cauliflower! But – it ends up adding a similar texture to food as white rice.  And the calorie difference is crazy.  1 cup of cauliflower rice is about 20 calories.  Same cup of cooked white rice…206.  You can do the math.  So…a Lean Cuisine with roughly 300 calories – add 1 – 2 cups of cauliflower rice (almost every LC has more sauce than is really necessary!) – stir it up.  You’ve got a filling meal – that takes a minute to eat (and chew!) – for around 340 calories.  I buy the rice in the steamer packages in the frozen section – cook the whole bag in the microwave and refrigerate half for another meal.

  • Steamed broccoli.  Again – microwave steamer bags – I keep them in my freezer all the time.  When I was/am hungry, I’d steam and eat the whole bag.  Sprinkle some grilling spice or just salt and pepper on the broccoli.  Maybe add a teaspoon of grated parmesan…again, it takes a minute to eat a ginormous plate of broccoli and it makes, and helps to keep, you full!  Might take a Beano or two before eating it…just sayin’.
  • Don’t try to weigh every day.  At least – that didn’t work for me.  Weight fluctuates up and down.  If you have a down day and then weigh the next day and you’re up – then…probably just a normal fluctuation.  But – that had a negative effect on me.  So I did every two weeks – on the same day – at the same time – in the same clothes (or lack thereof!).
  • I ate a lot (and still do!) of shredded iceberg lettuce.  One 8 ounce bag is 35 calories – I buy the packages by the handful at the grocery.  Add some thinly sliced turkey (I get the Oscar Meyer or Hillshire Farm kind – 50 cal for 2 ounces.  Don’t forget to WEIGH the meat!!), a kosher dill pickle, maybe some pickled gardiniere and okra, and low/no calorie salad dressing.  Cut it and mix it all up and it’s a pretty good salad.  I’ll also use the salad as a base for a “taco salad” and mix one of the mexican (Fiesta Giller Chicken, Unwrapped Burrito Bowl, etc – from Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice) into it.  When it’s all stirred up, I’ll add a little salsa – green or red – for some kick.  No cheese – I didn’t need it and didn’t want to “spend” the calories!  Yum!
  • Fiber One Lemon Bars, Cinnamon Coffee Cake and Brownies are nice little 90 calorie treats.  Do NOT be fooled – not each kind of Fiber One bar is only 90 calories.  Some are 150.  Watch out for “Health” food.  It may have lots of wholesome goodness – but the calorie counts can be shockingly high.  Like…granola.  Yikes!  Remember – I was doing straight up calories.  And – that might not be for you.  But…it worked for me! 🙂
  • I like a bedtime snack.  I know – not supposed to eat after 7.  Or is it 5?  I don’t know.  What I DO know is that if I do NOT have my little bedtime snack, I wake up around 2 and I’m hungry.  Too hungry to go back to sleep.  So…I am more than tempted (I usually follow thru!) to go to the kitchen and get a snack.  And it’s likely not all that well weighed/measured/thought out.  So.  I have 6 – 9 Reduced Fat Triscuit crackers (110-165 cal) and a slice of Sharp Cheese (90 cal).  I actually put it in my Lose It in the morning so that I am planning ahead for those calories.  The crunch and slight saltiness of the crackers makes me feel like I’m getting something and the protein in the cheese helps me not wake up hungry.  Again – this is what worked for me!

So – I think that about gets it.  I hope that this helps you some if you’re looking for help in this department.  If you’re one of the lucky folks out there who never has to worry about their weight – my envy level is very high indeed!  The idea of being able to eat whatever I want whenever I want it is….intoxicating.

But, I doubt that will ever be the case.  I’ve seen the result of that sort of food plan for me – and it’s not okay.  I will always and forever have to think about what I eat.  But the things I’ve learned in the year+ that it took me to lose it will (I most fervently hope!!) help me to stay very close to my goal weight forever!

If this is your journey – I wish you luck and Happy Calorie Counting!

Stampin’ Up! Varied Vases on Lace for the Happy Inkin’ Thursday Blog Hop

Happy Thursday, y’all – and welcome to another Happy Inkin’ Thursday Blog Hop!! Today’s a color challenge, and I hope you’ll check out everyone’s projects when you’re done here!

I pulled out a favorite bundle from the Annual Catalog – it’s easy to forget about all the wonderful goodies in that catty when we’re caught up in the excitement of a new Holiday catalog!  Varied Vases, and the matching Vases Builder Punch, lend a floral flair to my Subtle TIEF-embossed panel.  And looks really lovely perched atop a Delicate Lace Edgelit die cut.  Take a look-see:

We had a great color combo this week!

Using the Delicate Lace Edgelits, I cut a piece of Pool Party card stock to create the “on Lace” portion of my card, and cut it down a bit to be thinner (top to bottom).

Next, I embossed a piece of Galvanized Metal Paper in the new Tin Tile Dynamic TIEF (these will both be available on 5 Sept with the new 2018 Holiday Catalog).  Then I punched out several shapes with the Vase Builder Punch.

I dry fit the Lace die cut and my vases to determine where my flowers should be stamped on my Whisper White card front panel.  Then I stamped the flowers from Varied Vases in Gray Granite to correspond to where the vases would end up.  To complete the flowers, I used full-strength Berry Burst for the double flowers on the ends and Lemon Lime Twist for the two middle sets.

For the “tulips” – I added the outline image in full-strength Berry Burst and then stamped the fill image in stamped-off-once Berry Burst.

With the flowers all stamped, I ran the Whisper White panel thru the Big Shot in the Subtle Dynamic TIEF and matted it on Pool Party with Liquid Glue.  Then I added the Delicate Lace die cut and wrapped some Silver & Pool Party Baker’s Twine three times around the panel, securing it in the back with Glue Dots.

I gently curled the cut vases and adhered them with Liquid Glue and Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The Varied Vases sentiment is stamped in Berry Burst on Whisper White, punched with the Classic Label Punch and adhered with Liquid Glue.

I tied a bow from two lengths of the Silver & Pool Party Baker’s Twine and adhered it with a little Liquid Glue, added a few Pearl Basic Jewels and the card front was done!

On the inside, I cut another Delicate Lace Edgelits die from Pool Party card stock and adhered it to the bottom of a Whisper White panel.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Pool Party mat and into my Thick Whisper White card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

The front of my Whisper White Medium Envelope got a Gray Granite vase and stems and Berry Burst Flowers…

…and the envelope flap is embossed in the Tin Tile Dynamic TIEF.

Et Voila!  I think Varied Vases has to be one of our prettiest and most versatile bundles, don’t you?  And I love the Delicate Lace Edgelits – they create such beautiful accents.  I hope you like!

Stampin’ Up! Santa’s On His Way From Santa’s Workshop!

Happy Hawwmp Day, y’all!  Just a couple of sleeps and a wake-up and I’ll be on my way to Atlanta and my puppy and my ponies and kitties and hubby!  Whoo-hooo!

My card for today is cool.  Why?  Because not one ink pad was opened in the making of said card!

That’s right.  No ink.  No stamp set.  Just the wonderful Santa’s Workshop Memories & More Card pack (coming on 5 Sept in the new Holiday Catalog), a little card stock, twine and adhesive!  Take a look-see:

The fun layout was kind of loosely inspired by this week’s CAS(E) This Sketch layout.

Buckle up, buttercup – this is a quick one!

I started with the big and bold card from the Memories & More Card Pack, trimmed it a bit and matted it on Garden Green for the card front.  I wrapped a couple loops of Garden Green Baker’s Twine (coming in the new 2018 Holiday Catalog) around, securing it in the back with Glue Dots.

I trimmed the small Ho Ho Ho card, matted it on Garden Green and added it to the card front with Liquid Glue.  Then I did the exact same thing with Santa’s sleigh – he’s got some Dimensionals under the bottom and Liquid Glue for the top lefthand corner.

For my sentiment, I trimmed down a final Santa’s Workshop Memories & More Card.  It’s matted on Garden Green and popped on with a couple of Dimensionals.

I finished it off with a Garden Green Baker’s Twine bow tied around the twine already on the card and the card front was done!

On the inside – surprise! – I trimmed a big sentiment card from the pack!

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the trimmed card to a Garden Green mat and then into my Poppy Parade card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got some holly stickers from the Card Pack on the front…

…and a couple more stickers on the back!

Et Voila!  A quick and fun Christmas card – and no inky fingers – thanks to all the wonderful cards and images, stickers and sentiments from the Santa’s Workshop Memories & More Card Pack!  Folks – Memories & More Card Packs…not just for scrapbooking!!  Hope you like!
