Stampin’ Up! Watercolor Wishes and Birthday Blooms!

21 May 16 Update!  I just found out that this card was selected as the Chic of the Week over at Just Us Girls!!  Want to thank Judy Woodland for selecting my card and send a shout out to all the wonderful cards that were submitted! 🙂

————-

Good morning!  As I write this, it’s Saturday evening here in the Veggie Patch.  Yep – I’m the vegetable and my 350 square foot hotel room is my little patch of heaven!  I’ve spent the day in my jammies, watched a lot of tv, made exactly one card (bad Mary, bad!), done a little napping, and….I had chicken dinner from The Olde Pink House! 🙂

No – they don’t deliver.  But, it turns out that I am richly blessed with friends.  The young engineer who I’ve been carpooling with these past few weeks came by and brought me lunch.  When I said yesterday that I figured I’d spend the day vegging in my room and pass on lunch – he said “that’s great – you deserve a day of vegging.”  So…that’s really sweet (unless it means I’m looking really haggard…. 🙂 ) of him.  I didn’t expect him to bring lunch for me.  What a lovely surprise that was – and surely reminds me that surrounding ourselves with people we care about – and who care about us – is one of the most important things in our lives.  And makes every day richer, huh?

Yep – all that from one chicken dinner.  I told you – it’s epic! 🙂

So – the one card I stirred myself to do today is one of the two I’ve got commissions to make.  The lady who asked me to make her a birthday card for her mother told me “she’s girly and likes frilly things…and her roses!”  Which made the stamp choice a complete no-brainer for me. Birthday Blooms boasts a spectacular rose image, so I combined it with some Birthday Bouquet DSP (probably the thing I’ll miss the most from the Occasions Catalog) and added a couple of sentiments from Watercolor Wishes.  Take a look-see:

I let the good folks over at Pals Paper Arts help me with the layout, using PPA #300 as inspiration.

And – since I planned on using some Vellum, I figured I’d play along over at Just Us Girls, with Trend Week #343, too!

I also borrowed a technique that I saw over on Sandi MacIver’s blog – called Spotlighting.  She did a fun video that you can check out here.  It’s easy peasy!

I started by cutting my card front panel and the smaller panel from Whisper White card stock.  Using a tiny bit of SNAIL, I lightly adhered the smaller panel where it would ultimately reside on the larger piece.  I rubbed the panels with my Embossing Buddy, inked the large rose image from Birthday Blooms in Versamark, and stamped the image – making sure that the main part of the image was on the smaller panel.  But I also ensured that there would be portions of the leaves visible on the card front.

I sprinkled it with Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heat embossed it with my Heat Tool.  Then I carefully pulled the center panel off and set the larger card front aside.  Since I was Spotlighting – I was only going to color the center part of the image!

I used my Aqua Painter and colored the flower with Peekaboo Peach and Blushing Bride inks.  I used Peekaboo Peach in the middle of the flower – as well as to highlight the petals.  The leaves are done in Pear Pizazz.   Since I wasn’t using watercolor paper, I made sure to work fairly quickly – and not just flood my paper with water.  When it was dry, I used Fast Fuse to adhere it to a Gold Foil mat.

To build the card, I SNAILd the card front to a panel of Gold Foil, then added the vertical strip, which is some Birthday Bouquet DSP matted on more Gold Foil.  I thought it would be a fun touch to add some ribbon, so I ran a length of Peekaboo Peach 3/8″ Ruched Ribbon (new in the 2016-2017 Annual Catalog) up the center, securing it in back with scotch tape.  I popped the colored center panel on with Stampin’ Dimensionals, making sure to align the image with the image on the card front.

The sentiment, from Watercolor Wishes, is heat embossed in Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder on a strip of Vellum card stock.  I snipped banner ends and then used my Fine-Tip Glue Pen to put dots of glue under the embossed words to adhere it without allowing the glue to show thru on the front.  I drew a narrow line around the banner with my Gold Wink of Stella, added some Pearl Basic Jewels and the card front was done!

On the inside, I heat embossed a second Watercolor Wishes sentiment in Gold in the center of a Whisper White panel.  Over that, I stamped a second flower image from Birthday Blooms.  I inked the image in Basic Black Archival Ink and stamped it off once before stamping it right over the embossed sentiment.  Then I colored it, using my Clear Wink of Stella and picking up ink from the lid of my ink pads, in Blushing Bride and Pear Pizzazz.

I SNAILd the panel to a mat of Gold Foil, and into a Pool Party card base.  The front is popped on with Stampin’ Dimensionals!

For the Whisper White Medium Envelope, I added the same rose image that I’d used inside the card…

…and cut a Birthday Bouquet DSP liner with my Envelope Liner Framelits.

Et Voila!  I think this one is pretty and girly and certainly showcases roses – so I’m hoping it will be met with approval on Monday! 🙂  I hope that you like it, too – and will try the Spotlighting technique soon.  I’m definitely going to use it again!

You can get every item needed to make this card right now – well, except the Peekaboo Peach ink and Ruched Ribbon…. that you’ll have to wait to get on 1 Jun.  But you could easily substitute a yellow ink – perhaps So Saffron? – and some pink or Pool Party ribbon and still get a beautiful card!
