For today’s share, I took an unexpected stamp – Dove of Peace – and used it to make an Autumn-themed card. Not a Christmas card at all. More of a Thanksgiving card. And who better to be thankful to – for ALL things – than to the Dove of Peace? And what better day to be Thankful than on this Day of Remembrance of the events and losses of 9/11 so many years ago.
Take a look-see:
My design was inspired by the CAS(E) This Sketch challenge #140. I can’t wait to see what all the talented card-makers out there come up with for this fun, wide-open sketch. Be sure to head over there yourself, okay?
I started this card by heat embossing the Dove of Peace stamp onto a piece of Very Vanilla card stock. This is a very intricate design, so be darned sure to be generous with the Embossing Buddy! I patted the card and spread the powder all over the area I planned to stamp. I covered the sentiment on the stamp with tape and inked up with my Versamark, and then used my Stamp-a-Ma-Jig to be sure I got it in the exact spot I wanted it. Then I sprinkled Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder all over it, shook it off – and breathed a big sigh of relief when I saw that I didn’t have extra powder where I didn’t want it to be! My Heat Tool set the powder and got me ready to color!
Now, don’t get freaked out, but I used a LOT of different Stampin’ Write Markers to color my pretty bird. Want the list? Here you go: Always Artichoke. Crushed Curry, Old Olive, Cajun Craze, Cherry Cobbler, Pumpkin Pie, Tangerine Tango and Hello Honey! Don’t ask me where I put what – I have no idea, I just…colored. What fun this stamp is!
For the sentiment, I again used the Holiday Catalog Hostess set called Six Sayings. I think this is one of the prettiest fonts I’ve seen – and it’s substantial! You can see it covers almost the whole width of the card, so it makes a definite STATEMENT!
I heat embossed it, again with Basic Black embossing powder. And my Embossing Buddy! 🙂
For the stripes, I just used 3 sponge daubers, and made swipes across the page! The top swipe is Tangelo Twist, the middle is Crushed Curry and the bottom is Cajun Craze. I let them bleed into each other a little, keeping the edges blurry…..
I used my not-re-inked Cajun Craze Sponge Dauber to edge the edges of the art piece and then SNAILd it to a Basic Black mat. It’s popped onto a Tangelo Twist card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals. A few Pearl Basic Jewels – duh! – and the front was done!
On the inside, I matted a piece of Very Vanilla (that I edged again with my not-re-inked Cajun Craze dauber) onto a Basic Black mat. The sentiment and frond is from the For All Things stamp set (2015-2016 Annual Catalog). First I put some scotch tape over the part of the sentiment stamp I didn’t need, inked the rest up with Versamark and then stamped it in the middle of the card using my Stamp-a-Ma-Jig. Here’s a hint for using the Stamp-a-Ma-Jig when you’re using Versamark. First use some other colored ink – I used Tuxedo Black – and stamp the clear sheet that comes with the Stamp-a-Ma-Jig with that. Then clean the stamp off and ink it up with the Versamark. Otherwise – it’s REALLY hard to see your stamp on that clear sheet! Maybe you already knew that. Sorry…. 😉
After I heat embossed the sentiment in Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder, I stamped the frond in Old Olive. I first stamped it off on my grid paper and then stamped the liner.
I used my Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker to color the twine on the frond stems.
For the envelope, I stamped a couple of Old Olive fronds – again stamped off first – on the front….
and then used a piece of 2014-2016 In Color Designer Series Paper in Tangelo Twist to make a liner for my Very Vanilla envelope. Don’t forget to score your flap!
Et Voila! All done. Dove of Peace meets Autumnal Thankfulness. Good combo, I think!
So – here’s a thing I learned from Amy Koenders. If you already know this…well, you’re ahead of me! You know how Clear Mount stamps can sometimes be a bit persnickety about sticking to the acrylic handles? And we use a little of the Two-Way glue to “help” them? And then your stamps get kinda gooky on the back? Well, when I was at Amy’s meeting a couple weeks back, her stamps are…blank! There’s no label on them! I was….aghast! Appalled! Bewildered! How the HECK did she figure out what the stamp was?!? What direction to stamp it?!? Oh. My. Goodness!
And then I thought….hmmm. Guess you could LOOK at it? Stamp it on a piece of scrap paper? Duh. And guess what? Without the label – they stick like MAGIC!! So….I’ve started a new way of doing business. I’m not putting labels on my clear mount stamps – so, there! Even though it goes against the directions on the case! gasp….. I EVEN pulled OFF labels on my For All Things stamps. Craziness! 🙂 But it sure does work!

You’ve colored your dove just beautifully Mary! I love the sentiment too. Your comments about the stickers on the back of your stamps makes me giggle a little…I’ve been a rebel since day 1 with my clear mount stamps, I’ve never put the stickers on! 😉
But – that’s going against the RULES!! 🙂 And boy does it work! I was really happy to find I could peel the stickers back off! 🙂
Nice combo. The dove and sentiments work well together. I love the Thankful font, so pretty! Yes, I , too am sort of a rebel with those stamps. I got tired of them falling off and couldn’t remember how to make them stick better so I just nixed the labels!
Thanks, Jari – once I saw Amy do it – and heard that you do it, too….well, I followed along. I’ve had the durned things fall off as I was turning to stamp a card and make a lovely little pearl/rhinestone spot. If you catch my drift! 🙂
Your card is right on the money for this memorable day. And beautiful too!
Thanks, Mom! 🙂
Oh, this is beautiful! Wonderful take on the sketch!
Thank you, Leigh! 🙂
Great post Mary and a great card!
Thanks so much, Vikki. 🙂
