Watercolor Wings Book Card

Here’s something you don’t know about me.  I am an ORGANIZING MAVEN!!  I LIVE to clean and organize my household, my barn, my life.  My closet is organized by color, garment type and day of the week.  My kitchen – well, let’s just say that it could pass for Martha Stewart’s kitchen.

I am possibly the most organized person you will ever know – virtually or in reality.

She said – never!

I’m possibly the polar opposite of everything I wrote above.  Oh, I have good intentions.  I can straighten and organize an area in the house and it looks quite awesome.  And then I USE that area and….well, you know.

Why am I telling you this, you might ask?  Well – think back a few posts, when I told you that I’d lost the piece of paper with the recipe for the book Wedding card.  Remember me telling you that I would likely FIND said paper where I least expected I would?  Guess what?  I was right.  I DID find it.  Tucked away with my embellishments and a couple of ink pads.  That’s where you’d have stuck it, right?  Certainly you wouldn’t have carefully placed it in your computer roll-on with the other pieces of paper with card recipes.  THAT would be crazy. 😉  But, find it I did – so here’s how to make a book card.

Now, this is a different card – I decided to make a new card using the same technique.  So the card cuts will be very close to what I used in the wedding card – just different colors.  If anyone wants the actual info for the Timeless Love wedding card – just leave me a comment and I’ll post that one as well.

I decided to use the Watercolor Wings set – brand new! – Butterfly Basics, and the Thoughts and Prayers set to create a Get Well card.  Take a look see:

Awesomely Artistic Wedding Card

Monday Monday!  And…drum roll, please….this will be my LAST Monday post from California!  You may now picture me doing a happy dance around the hotel room!!  Whoo-hooooo!!  I am SO ready!  Well, “ready” is a strong word – that might well imply that my stuff is organized, my bags are packed and I’m ready to go….the taxi’s waiting, he’s blowing his horn….oops, sorry  – channeled John Denver there for a minute!  So, I’m not literally ready to go.  Lots to do between now and heading to LA Friday.  But it’s the downhill stretch!

My friend headed back East this weekend to attend his niece’s wedding.  I – in a fit of silliness – offered to make him a wedding card (cause, you know – I wasn’t doing anything else or working 12 hour days 7 days a week or anything).  But, I offered and so I did.  But I actually made TWO – cause I wasn’t sure what he’d like for his niece.  I told him to take both of them and look and decide at his leisure!  I’m anxious to hear which one he picked…

One of the new 2015-2016 stamp sets I’ve acquired is called Awesomely Artistic.  And boy is it.  Awesome, that is!  It’s got a little bit of everything in it  – a couple of stamps that could be from the Butterfly Basics, a Gorgeous Grunge-esque stamp, and a most beautiful floral stamp.  You really need to consider adding it to your tool stash.  Anyway, the wedding colors were blue and gold (no specifics on WHICH blue!), so that’s where I started.  Take a look-see:

I started with some of the lovely Shimmery White Card Stock.  First, using the fourth-from-the-center oval in the Oval Collections Framelits, I cut the sentiment mat.  I stamped the Congratulations sentiment from the Timeless Love set (another GREAT new stamp set!!) in Night of Navy.  I used a tiny dab of SNAIL to temporarily adhere the oval to the card front (also in Shimmery White).  Then, using my Stamp-a-Ma-Jig, I stamped the beautiful floral stamp, in Smoky Slate, making sure to get part way on the card front and close to the sentiment on the oval (this is where the Stamp-a-Ma-Jig really helped – I wanted to get as close to the sentiment as possible, without covering it!).

Using my retired Metallic Gold Encore pad, I inked and stamped with the Gorgeous Grunge-esque splatter stamp.  No rhythm or reason to it – just put it around until it made me happy!  With that done, I SNAILd the sentiment onto a Night of Navy mat (cut with the next-largest oval – that would be the one FIFTH from the center!) and then used Dimensionals to adhere the entire stack to the card front – making sure I lined up the flowers.

I broke out several of the blues in my Many Marvelous Markers set – Soft Sky, Pool Party, Coastal Cabana, Marina Mist, and Pacific Point – and colored in the flowers. I also used the Marina Mist marker to highlight the veins in all the flowers.  For the leaves, I combined Pear Pizzazz, Wild Wasabi and a touch of Old Olive.  I must make a plug here for the Many Marvelous Markers set.  Even being a bit spendy, it’s paid for itself many MANY times over.  It’s a wonderful part of my tool chest, and I can’t imagine not having it.  We now return to our regularly scheduled blog post.

At this point, I realized I’d done my usual thing. I’d smudged some Night of Navy ink onto the oval.  So, I needed a cover-up.  Enter….the Flutter-by!!  Our Flutter-by hails from the brand new Watercolor Wings bundle (15% off for the stamp set plus the matching Thinlits set….).  I first built the smaller butterfly – this is a two-step (really THREE!) stamp set – stamping him with Night of Navy and Smoky Slate, and then cutting him out with the smaller die in the new thinlits set (OBTW – you can ALSO cut this guy out with the small die from the ButterfliesThinlits).  Here’s a picture of each of the dies, side by side.  You can see what I mean!  The smallest die in each set cuts the smallest stamps in both Watercolor Wings and Butterfly Basics.  The new set cuts the die with all the same intricacies of the larger die, while the Butterflies Thinlits cuts a solid butterfly – equally beautiful, just a completely different look.  The possibilities are endless!

Butterfly Thinlit Types

Once I cut him out, I decided I wanted him to be a little more fragile and fluttery looking, so I cut another one from vellum.  Then, I smooshed the vellum die cut into the Gold Metallic ink pad – and then used a paper towel to dry it off and remove some of the ink – to make it a little more transparent.  Was that clear as mud?!?  Maybe a picture will help…

You can see that the gold isn’t solid on the vellum….can’t you?  I used a couple of glue dots to connect the two butterflies, gave him a Pearl Basic body, and stuck him to the card (ensuring I covered up the boo-boo that inspired his birth in the first place!) with some Mulit-purpose Liquid Glue. And then I SNAILd the whole shootin’-match to my Night of Navy Card base, added some more tiny pearls to the flowers and….done!  To be honest, I’m really glad (now!) that I smudged that oval – I might not have come up with the butterfly embellishment and I really think it “makes” the card!

For the inside, I started with some more of the Shimmery White card stock, and stamped the sentiment from the For the New Two set in Night of Navy.  A few more gold grunge splatters finished it off.

To really complete the ensemble, I gold-grunged a Medium Whisper White envelope to pull it all together.

Shawn liked this card – as did I.  I simply love this floral image in the Awesomely Artistic set – and I think you will, too!  Next week, I’ll share the second card I made for him – and by then will know which card he selected to give to his niece!

This marks the start of my last week in California.  The chance to get in on the 2015-2016 Catalog Shares is also drawing to a close.  I’ve still got a few spaces open, so let me know if you want in on this opportunity to get a large sampling of the new papers, trims and embellishments!  The sign up form is below and the last day to sign up is 17 Jun.  That’s day after tomorrow!
