Stampin’ Up! Take to the Sky Sneak Peek Plane & Simple Card with Video Tutorial

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things

So begins the famous poem by John Gillespie Magee – and we’ve got a new suite in the 2024-2025 Annual Catalog (available for customer ordering on 1 May!) that will let you capture that feeling of flying amongst the white puffy clouds on a blue blue day!

Or – you know, just make a really cool card!

Yes – it’s the Take to the Sky Suite and it has a wunnermus die bundle – the Adventurous Sky set – and perfectly wonderful Take to the Sky DSP to make the magic happen! Take a look-see:

The layout for this one was inspired by the sketch challenge at Tuesday Morning Sketches this week!  Pssst: I turned it on its side! 🙂

I started by stamping the rivet-panel image from the Adventurous Sky stamp set in Smoky Slate ink all over the front of my Smoky Slate card base.

Using the second-to-largest Deckled Rectangle die, I cut a cloud-strewn paper from the wunnermus Take to the Sky DSP.

I adhered the rectangle die cut to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Using all the cloud dies in the Adventurous Sky set, I cut out some Basic White clouds.  Using Liquid Glue, I adhered three of them – one in each size – at the top of the rectangle on the card front..

I used the fuselage die to cut out a Mossy Meadow plane and the wings die to cut Copper Clay wings.  I adhered them together with Liquid Glue.

I cut out a Smoky Slate propeller – there’s a die for that, too! – and adhered it to the airplane with a dab of Liquid Glue.

Then I adhered the plane to the card front – nose up – it’s SLIPPING the surlies, after all! 🙂

On a piece of Basic White, I stamped two sentiments in Boho Blue ink.  I cut the larger sentiment with the large cloud die and adhered it to the card front front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I added another small cloud with Dimensionals.

I cut the other sentiment using the banner die in the Adventurous Sky set – cheating the sentiment to the left side.  I cut out a Copper Clay tow-harness and adhered it a little past the end of the sentiment (not at the far end of the banner) with a little Liquid Glue.  Note: do some fit checking here – to be sure you make the banner short enough to fit on the card!  The video shows you how to do that!

I snipped the excess banner and then adhered it to the card front – “attaching” the end of the tow harness to the back of the plane and the card front was done!

On the inside, I stamped the fun cloud image from Adventurous Sky in Smoky Slate on a Basic White panel.  Over it, I stamped a second sentiment in Boho Blue ink.  Then I added a small airplane image from the set in Copper Clay ink.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Mossy Meadow mat and into the Smoky Slate card base and the card was done.

My Basic White Medium Envelope got the clouds and airplane on the front…

…and some more white-puffy clouds paper on the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  Oh boy, y’all – this Take To The Sky Suite is…amazing!  I just love the vintage biplane at the center of the suite – and the Adventurous Sky stamped images and die cut “parts” – let you be so creative with your livery!!  So fun! This photo shows the die cuts you can make and some ideas on colors, too!

AND the Take to the Sky DSP – is perfect in the muted, vintage-y colors!   So – be making your list and get ready to order on 1 May!!  Whoo-hoo!

Such a cool card! Love that airplane and the awesome banner! Poor Finn…it’s hard to wait. 😉

    • stampsnlingers

It’s a great set. And waiting IS hard. So – best to sleep thru it! ;). Thanks, Amy!

  2. I think Finn has Wayne’s number!
What a beautiful card. This suite was one of the first ones I decided I need to get. Do sets like this make your heart flutter a bit, since you were flying among the clouds? I was fortunate to get a ride in a Stearman when I worked at the newspaper. One of the farmers owns one with his brother and offered me a ride! What an experience! I might have to do my first plane in yellow.

Flying in and around the puffies is one of the great joys of flying!! We didn’t get to do a lot of it in the C-5 (obvs!) but the C-21 and the small jets in pilot training were fair game!! Thanks, Julie! 🙂

  3. Kate

Perfect card!!! Loved re-visiting the poem.
Ah, Finn…and the wait goes on.
Blessed Palm Sunday and Holy Week to all. 🙏

  4. Faith Simpson

The minute I saw this new stamp set, I thought of you…..I mean, how could I not! This is an awesome card, Mary…

    • stampsnlingers

LOL – right?! It’s a great set! Thanks, Faith! 🙂
