Stampin’ Up! 2019 Incentive Cruise Last Stops! Athens and Olympia

Good Saturday to you all!

I am mystified, amazed and not a little sad to think that this will be my last “tour” post! Yes, it’s true. It’s Saturday morning and we’ve been to our last port of call. As this posts, we’re steaming towards Rome. Tomorrow – we’ll be leaving on a jet plane! Back to the real world. 🙁 These trips go by in the blink of an eye – the saying that time flies when you’re having fun isn’t a saying for nothing!

Our last two stops were at Athens and then Katakolon. I took a ton of pictures – hello? Tourist? Yes, that would be me! So figured I’d share a few of them with you – and will post the bulk of them on my Stamps-N-Lingers FB page! Hope you’ll check them all out! 🙂

Athens was pretty amazing – busy busy busy. Lots of people. We got a ton of warnings about pick-pockets (more here than anywhere we’d been), so we were keeping a sharp eye! The traffic was cray-cray, so the bus ride into the city center took a minute – but we got some gorgeous looks at the water!

When we finally debarked the bus – to stern warnings to be “BACK ON TIME CUZ WE’RE LEAVING EXACTLY AT 2” we made our way to the bottom of the Acropolis. And waited in line to get our tickets before beginning the climb. I’m serious. I hit my exercise goal half way up (and hadn’t done the treadmill that morning! :))

This is a view of the Acropolis from a slightly different perspective – but you can see it’s sorta up there, right?

As we climbed – for a ways it was on a pretty decent path, I took some pictures (using the moment to catch my breath, but…we’ll pretend it was just for the picture taking!)…

Did I mention there were a LOT OF PEOPLE?!? As we got nearer to the top, the path got less path-y and way more climb-y…and the rocks were slippery – and the staff peeps were blowing their whistles at folks who tried to stop the flow to take a picture. So – I didn’t!

Finally – we reached the top. And…Oh. My. Lord. Folks – the pictures you see online and in books and on this post simply can’t REALLy do justice to the sheer enormity and architectural prowess of the Parthenon itself. So – enjoy these pics, but…to truly “get” it – you need to put your own eyeballs on it!

After we’d seen what we went up to see, we climbed back down the hill and made a quick pass thru the Agora (marketplace)…

We saw the temple of Hephaestus – the God of Fire, Metallurgy and Blacksmithing (he was also known as Vulcan – not the Live Long and Prosper kind – the Roman mythology kind) and made note of some of the fauna of the area!

Finally – we had a few minutes left to get some lunch and then get ourselves back to the bus and return to ship-sweet-ship for the evening! As we set sail, we waved good-bye to Athens!

While we slept, the ship made good time around to Katakolon and we awoke to a beautiful sunrise in the Mediterranean!

We backed into the port at Katakolo and boarded our bus for the Olympics.

Well – the birthplace of the ANCIENT Olympics!

This is a much greener area – with olive and citrus trees abounding. I really like this area – and the little village of Olympia is very pretty indeed! Also? WAY fewer people this day! 🙂

We started at the actual archaeological site…

and strolled thru taking pictures here and there. Take a look-see!

We came to the area where the lighting of the flame took place…

…and then thru the arch to the big field where the track events took place.

We discovered Nero’s Villa…a palatial spot (remarkably intact!) with a “luxurious bathroom” (their words!) for him to stay when he came to the games!

A bath-house (every other Friday whether they needed it or not)…

…was near a swimming area – this whole area had some definite Roman influence.

There was a lovely flowering bush nearby…

Finally, no tour would be complete without a Temple to Zeus..

Greece reconstructed one of the columns for the 2004 Summer Olympics – anticipating heavy tourism!

My handsome hubby posed for me to help you get some perspective – that pillar is pretty tall!

We ended the day with some gyros and – shocker! – gelato at a tavern on the main street!

That’s far from all the pictures we took in Athens and Olympia – I’ll load them onto my FB page as I can on the ship and then when I get to a little better internet!

Hope you’ve enjoyed a little peek at our fabulous trip! I’m sorry to see it come to an end – but…know that next year in Maui will be awesome, too. And…we got a look at the 2021 Trip. Back onboard Royal Caribbean!! This time on the Symphony of the Seas!! WOWZA!!

Stampin’ Up! Mykonos, Delos and Kitties, Oh My!

Happy Friday, y’all! I come to you today as we’re exploring our final stop on the cruise – Katakolon – birthplace of the original Olympics!

On Thursday, we were in Athens – I’ll have pics for you from there in a couple of days. For today, let’s go to Mykonos! 🙂

Now – Amy and I have decided that the cruise lines should put Santorini (the FIRST stop!) at the end. Cuz…for sheer beauty and quaintness, the rest of them tend to be overshadowed. But – this is a lovely port town – being visited by some BIG. YACHTS! Like…

And some REALLY. BIG. YACHTS!

We tendered into the Old Port – and did a little walking around and sightseeing before the start of our trip to Delos…

…and made sure to get our picture-in-every-port done!

We got a little shopping out of the way, then headed over to get onto the SeaBus, which would take us over to Delos.

On the way, we ran into…

She was strolling around and one of the locals saw her and went and turned this tap on to a small trickle for her to get a drink. Which she did – until some tourist got in the middle of it and bothered her. Then she walked off to lay in the shade until the silly people left! 🙂

We loaded up and took a leisurely boat ride to Delos – the birthplace of Apollo! And Cleapatra spent some time here, too! On the way, I snapped a picture FROM the water TO our cabin on the back of Jewel of the Seas!

We arrived to see the ruins from the boat…

– and a statue hanging out in the water.

I figured that was a statue to honor Poseidon (or Aquaman – wasn’t really sure) – but was disappointed to discover it was one of a bunch of iron (read…really really modern) art works being displayed in and around the ruins. It was all modern-y and “supposed to make us think”. Not a fan!

Anywho…our guide was an archeologist who spent five years living on the island BEFORE it was designated as a UNESCO site. Which means…before there was electricity! THAT is a dedicated archeologist!

She gave us a totally fascinating tour – in addition to the temple of Apollo…

We saw ginormous homes – 12 – 13 rooms! – obviously owned by extraordinarily wealthy folks of the time. This one had a center “garden” – no plants, but columns around creating an open air courtyard inside the walls of the house. At it’s base was a mosaic “carpet” created with zillions of teensy-tiny pieces of marble and jewel. The original had been moved to the museum on the island for safe-keeping, but…even the “re-creation” can give you an idea of its beauty! 🙂

We saw their living room – with pieces of their lounging beds for…lounging and eating and sleeping…

Uhm…not Laz-Y-Boy OR Tempurpedic. Just sayin’!

This guy was most likely a ship owner (ie: WEALTHY!). You can tell by his artwork on the walls! Can you see the ship??

We went by the bank – it was really interesting hearing our guide tell us how they figured out it was a bank – and that across the “street” was the banker’s home. We saw what was probably the “teller” window…

And then – of course!…

WHY did I think they wouldn’t be on the island? They were, of course – hundreds of them. Sigh…

But I saw little dishes of food and water – and not a one looked particularly scrawny. In fact, they all looked pretty happy with their lot in life!

Not gonna lie, though – that was the hardest part of the whole trip for me. Seeing SO many kitties just wandering around. I’ll be glad to get home to hug my spoiled and pampered little puss! 🙂

Moving on…

We saw the city cistern…that would have been covered over with wood and other materials – being supported by those arches.

And the theater! She told us this could have held 6500 people! All men. The women…not so much! 😉

At the front of the “stage” is the remnant of a “gift” from a wealthy patron!

Probably didn’t get THAT at Wally or from Amazon Prime!

We saw Cleopatra’s house…and learned that the busts of the local inhabitants were like the early PhotoShop! They’d take the body of a young physically fit man or, I suppose, woman, and put their face/head on the top! Hmmm.

As we got to the end of the tour – passing the market area…

…and what remains of the base of the statue honoring Apollo. This is what’s LEFT – it is huge and it was supposedly 35m tall. JUST the base. Think how gihugic that statue must have been!

We finished up at the line of lions guarding what was once a Sacred lake…

We headed back to the docking area to await the SeaBus and…took a moment to cool off, dangling our toes in the Aegean!

Stampin’ Up! 2019 Incentive Trip Cruising the Greek Isles and a 2019 Holiday Sneak Peak!

Happy Happy Hawwmp Day! Are you impressed that I’m able to track hawmp day??? Or…ANY day at all??!

I sure am! Between the time zone differences and changes – and the almost total lack of my “normal” day-triggers…I’m amazed that I know if it’s Christmas or Tuesday!

Speaking of Christmas – yesterday before our shore excursion to Santorini, we did some make-and-takes using the new Most Wonderful Time stamp set and Product Medley.

Remember that one?

Stampin’ Up! pretty much took over the Tides dining room. They’re going to be vaccuming up Dimensional covers for a long time! 🙂

We all used part of our Product Medleys and our new stamp sets and made three fun and quick Christmas cards.

On the way out to get ready for our time in Santoriini, we ran into Sara and Shawn Douglas and yes…I got a picture with them and with Amy!

Then, it was time to hit the tenders (not the spicy chicken ones – the FLOATING ones!) and make our way to shore!

We gathered in the theater and then hit the boats!

First stop – the Akrotiri Ruins! This is an archaeological site dating back 3600 years! It’s really quite amazing – they built a city with buildings 3 – 4 stories tall. With rain gutters and water control systems. With toilets! And centers of commerce. Here are just a few pictures – I’ll post the rest of them over on my Stamps-N-Lingers FB page in the next few days!

Apparently, in all the excavation that has taken place, they’ve found no bones at all – neither human nor animal. Which means they got everytone out before the volcano did its thing!

Our guide was a Greek archaeologist who really knew his stuff – and had a great way of sharing it with us! The only issue for me was that he sounded a lot like the father in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies – so I kept expecting him to tell me how the ancient Greeks used Windex for everything! LOL!

When we were done with the ruins, we rode over to Oia (pronounced Eee-uh). It’s the home of the most-likely-to-be-found-in-a-picture of Santorini cathedral. You’ll recognize it!

And this is the home of the iconic white-washed homes, apartments and hotels seen perched on the cliffs of the caldera.

Oh. And gelato! We found a wonderful little taverna with pizza and gelato. I totally expected the cast of Mamma Mia to pop out at any moment!

We wound up in Fira – the capitol of Santorini and rode the tram down to the tenders. There’s home-sweet-home on the right!

We got ourselves to Wayne’s and my cabin – which is on the back and perfectly positioned to see the famous Santorini sunset. We couldn’t have positioned the ship better ourselves!

Not long after sunset, the Captain spun the ship around and we headed out of the caldera on our way to our next stop!

Tomorrow (well….today!) – Mykonos!! 🙂

Stampin’ Up! 2019 Greek Isles – Cruising…Cruising….and a 2019 Holiday Catalog Sneak Peek!

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend – and have enjoyed the pictures of Rome!

We’re on Day One – or…two?…of the cruise. And by the time you get this – Amy, Anna, Wayne and I will be in a cupcake decorating class.

Yes – you read me right! 🙂 We’re all taking a cupcake decorating class on the ship. I think it will be fun – and am pretty sure we get to eat our creations! 🙂

In anticipation of eating our homework….I started my day doing…

…while watching THIS go by on the starboard side! Stromboli! No – in this case it’s a vocanic island – NOT a food!

Oh yea. We also saw the new Holiday catalog earlier today! 😉

We sort of got a glimpse of it when we arrived to the ship on Sunday. After the first of many eating sessions, we hit the SU! hospitality room and spun for our first “gift”! Here’s a look-see at what I won…I WONDER what the stamp set that matches this looks like!! 😉

One of the cool things (among a TON of cool things!!) about our incentive trips is a little thing callled…pillow gifts!

A pillow gift is a….well…GIFT…from Stampin’ Up! The room stewards bring them and leave them in our rooms in the evenings, usually when we’re at dinner or out just cruising the decks (yes – I did that). Our first one arrived on Sunday! OPA!

What is that clipped to the top you ask?!? Check it!

Whoo-hoo!

But wait! Those are…black!?!? Holy smokes!! AWESOME-SAUCE!! You KNOW how I feel about dimensionals!! 🙂

Inside – we discovered a super cool bag – it’s a leather purse/daypack!! 🙂

That’s going to come in really handy, I know – and it’s so pretty!! 🙂

On Monday morning we had our general session where we got to see (and get!!) some of the new goodies in the 2019 Holiday Catalog! Check out the cover!

This fun Apple Builder Punch has a bundled stamp set called Harvest Hellos – and it can be an apple – or a pumpkin!

The Christmas Gleaming set is part of the Brightly Gleaming Suite – and is bundled with the Gleaming Ornaments Punch Pack (a set of TWO large punches) and some of the prettiest paper ever – the Brightly Gleaming Specialty DSP.

The Toile Christmas set will make Cardinal lovers’ hearts flutter – especially given that there’s a matching set of Christmas Cardinal Dies!!

The final stamp set we got today is the Tags Tags Tags set – with a bundle of dies called Trio of Tags!

And there are some wonderful copper-foil embellishments, too!

So – the cruise is under way! We’re at sea on Monday and Monday night and then get into Santorini for our first port on Tuesday! So – more pictures will be coming! Stampin’ Up! Rome and…More Gelato?? Seriously?!?

Happy Saturday! Hope you’re having a good weekend so far! To be honest, as I write this on Friday afternoon in our break between sightseeing and dinner…I have no idea what our plan is for Saturday – guess we’ll know soon!

But on Friday – we had an awesome guided van tour that Amy’s husband, Lance, arranged for us! Massimo met us in a nice (air conditioned!!) van at 8 at the hotel and we hit the road.

As we experienced “Rome” driving – which is….like nothing I’ve ever seen! – we wound our way around the city and listened to Massimo speak of a city that he obviously loves. And he knows so much of its history – it was really interesting. We learned a lot while having a great time. Which is sort of…AWESOME!

So – we stopped first at the Colosseum where we met Jason (another highly experienced tour guide). We spent a couple of hours walking around the Colosseum and learning some really cool things. Guys – the architecture is simply stunning. The engineering firsts that they accomplished here so many many years ago – and the architectural elements – have stood the test of time and were used as “templates” for a plethora of other buildings far away (in space AND time) from its building. Take a gander!

Not going to lie – this was a fascinating place to see – but…I am glad I wasn’t around in its heyday – I would not have liked it at all.

It was interesting to hear that after the fall of the Roman empire, the structure was essentially abandoned. And, as times were hard for the poeple, they actually used it for their own purposes – building houses and fortified structures – using it as a foundation – thru the years! You can see large holes in the walls where beams were placed to create walls or parts were removed and repurposed.

One such place remains…

We also swung by the Forum for a quick look.

Next we saw a short section of the original Appian Way…pretty darned rough looking, but we were assured it was smooth and driveable back “in the day”!…

…and then we hit the Catacombs of St Callixtus. In addition to being a welcome respite from the heat – the catacombs are at a constant 58F! – our tour there was led by a young Priest – and it was…really pretty powerful. Especially the story of St. Cecilia – who is the Patron Saint of Music. She was a martyr and…well. Look it up. We weren’t allowed to take any pictures in the catacombs – but…here’s a picture I found online (from Dickstrack of English Wikipedia) of the statue that lays in her spot. They commissioned that after finding her in that exact position in her crypt – check out her fingers (that was a code back in the days when Christians had to be a secret society to avoid Persecution). Not sure why – but her story really sort of hit me!

Anywho…after lunch (BEST pizza I’ve ever tasted!) – we went to the St Paul’s Basilica outside the wall of the old city. Wow!

We made one last stop for a scenic overlook of the city…

…and it was time for the end of the tour! Bye-bye, Massimo! We had a wonderful time!

We finished the morning activities with another round of gelato – yes. It’s true. This time was dark chocolate and strawberry. OMG!

We learned something else from Massimo – take the food to go. Otherwise – they add about $3 to the price to sit down! So we did – go, not sit down – which means…no pictures! 🙁

And then we returned to our rooms to rest up until dinner. Lance found us a great little spot on Trip Advisor – we had a great meal and another fun time together!

LOL! Rome – as seen between feasting sessions!! 🙂

Oh well. It’s vacation and I’m sure there are no calories. Also – we’re doing a lot of walking – and stairs on this day! – and it’s hot. So…I’m burning them.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😉

Stampin’ Up! Gelato and Rome!

Hey guys – it’s Friday!

I’m pretty sure.

Well – it’s Friday SOMEwhere – here? There? Both?

I’m tired, folks – the jet lag is real! So – my normally sharp-as-a-razor-wit may be a little…dull. 😉

We spent Wed and Thursday getting to Rome – long but easy flying, all in all.

After we arrived at our hotel…

… and met up with Igor…

…we hit the streets and saw some sights!

Like…the Pantheon. And the Trevi Fountain. St. Peter’s Basilica. All I can really say is Oh. My. Goodness! The architecture is simply beyond explaining. The sheer size – and intricate detail of the carvings. The longevity of these buildings that have been here since the start of recorded civilization. Sort of stunning!

And then?

Yep. Gelato.

Amy and I had Tiramisu Gelato.

It. Did. Not. Suck. 🙂

After dinner we walked a little more to see the the Piazza Del Popolo and the Fontana della Dea di Roma.

Okay. We actually did Gelato…TWICE.

In the same day.

Our second go was a scoop of Dark Chocolate and a scoop of Baileys. It was even better than the Tiramisu! 🙂

So! Day one was a rousing success.

One of these days soon I’ll tell the “Spanx” story. But not today.

Stampin’ Up! Rome – Here We Come! And – A Thank You Ordering Special!

Happy Happy HAWWWMP Day!

Or as they day in Italy: felice giorno della gobba felice.

Well – that’s what Google Translate says, anyway!

Regardless – we’ll be on the way soon. First off is to take the Man to Puppy Tubs – we packed his gear – food, bones, a toy-that-smells-like-me, and Mr. Elephant (who had come back from the toy-hospital in the barn). We’ll drop him and then head to the airport around noon!

We’ll meet up with Amy and her family in Philadelphia then commence the 9+ hour flight to Rome where we’ll spend a few days before boarding the ship on Sunday!

Finn Fan Fix

Last weekend at Sam’s we bought a whole watermelon.

Almost as if we weren’t leaving…today!…on vacation.

So – I cut it up on Sunday with the plan that we’d eat it and then whatever was leftover we’d leave (with the chunks of the cut-up rind) in the outside fridge to be fed to the ladies while we were gone.

I even used a cookie scoop to make the melon balls. Cuz…melon tastes better as balls. That’s a real thing.

But folks…there weren’t enough melon-baller-cookie-scoops to help this thing!
