Stampin’ Up! Whale Done Color Blocking with a Video Tutorial!

Happy Friday, y’all!  Been a busy week here, don’t know how it’s been for you.  Our garden picked this week to decide to BURST at the seams!  I had tomatoes and green beans and chile peppers and tomatillos EVERYWHERE.  On every counter surface and in every rinse/drain container I own.  So, yesterday I decided I’d better get them “processed”.   Let me just say – I can wait a long time to peel and roast another tomatillo, y’all!

Except…I won’t be able to wait – cuz those boogers are just tomatillo-ing their little hearts out! I’ll be peeling/roasting/blending again before I know it!

If you were able to join me yesterday for my YouTube live, I appreciate you spending some time with me – if not, but you’d like to see the replay, here ’tis! 🙂

I know this card is really similar to the one I did on Wednesday – but I had some requests to see the color block technique, so…I figured what the heck!  This time, though, I used the super fun Whale Done stamp set – I really think the color block looks like water!  Take a look-see:

I used a Thick Whisper White panel for the card front.  To a D-Block, I added Pretty Peacock, Coastal Cabana and Pool Party ink – about 1/3 of the block for each color.  Then I lightly spritzed the block with water using my Stampin’ Spritzer.  Tip:  keep the block flat after you spray it – unless you’re going for the “runny” look. 😉

I helped the panel dry with a little blast from the low setting of my Heat Tool.

Next, I stamped the Whale Done sentiment in Pretty Peacock under the block.

I added all the underwater flora and fauna in Pretty Peacock – making sure to go outside the color block for some of them!  Then I added bubbles in Coastal Cabana….

I matted the panel on Coastal Cabana, added a few Pool Party gems from the Holiday Rhinestone Basic Jewels and the card front was done.  Easy peasy!

On the inside, I added a Coastal Cabana-matted strip of the Whale of a Time DSP across the bottom of a Whisper White panel.  Then I stamped some Pretty Peacock fishes and Coastal Cabana bubbles.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Coastal Cabana mat and into my Pretty Peacock card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got more fishies and bubbles on the front…

…and a little more Whale of a Time DSP on the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  Check out the video to see how to do this color blocking technique and then…give it a go!  And the Whale Done stamp set is perfect for this technique, don’t you think?  I hope you like!

If you want to re-create this card, all the card cuts and products used are listed down below!

  1. Tomatillos are a bear! I have sworn I will never buy another. Do tell for what Finn called you on the carpet. Well, you know how I feel about this card already cuz I was watching and you did not disappoint! I can wait to re-create, a/k/a CASE this today as soon as the shipment of the DSP arrives. I can hear Bobby Darin singing Somewhere Beyond the Sea while I’m working on it 🙂

    • stampsnlingers

LOL! aka-CASE-away! Thanks so much, Karen – enjoy! 🙂

  2. Love, love, love this card! Definitely need to CASE it! 🙂 Hope that the boss wasn’t too rough on you. 😉

Ah, how gorgeous. Thanks for showing how you did the block. I wasn’t tap tap tapping enough.
The boss looks relaxed so it must’ve been an easy conversation!

    • stampsnlingers

Yep – it was just a mid-report review, so all is good! LOL. Thanks so much, Susan! 🙂

  5. Faith Simpson

Hey Mary…..thanks so much for showing how to do this technique……except that doesn’t mean mine will turn out like yours (smile)…..!! It was perfect with the whale set, and I can’t wait to try it. My whale set is on its way, and this is the first thing I’ll try to do!! Your card is perfect.

    • stampsnlingers

Give it a go, Faith! Even if it takes a few tries! Thanks so much – and enjoy the Whale Done set! 🙂

  6. Love this card, but have to wait until next week for the whales. Sorry I missed the live tutorial.
Finn looks like he needs a haircut to get rid of some of that furry coat so he can be cooler. Hope he wasn’t too hard on you. Maybe he just needed to tell you to make an appointment with the groomer?

    • stampsnlingers

We’re working on a grooming session – but it’ll be to get undercoat not the long stuff! He went easy on me, though! Thanks, Julie!

  7. Marcia
