Made it to another weekend – my, how time does seem to fly! Is it because I’m getting older…or is it because I have company coming in 27 days? Or…what do y’all think? I mean, seriously – it feels like I’m gonna blink and it’s going to be Christmas!
In 2025!! 🙂 Sheesh.
So today’s card is probably going to annoy you guys a little – cuz I called on my new favoritest stamp and Thinlit set – the Christmas Pines bundle from the 2016 Holiday catalog. I can’t help it very much, y’all – I just flat love this set. So…I’m gonna use it! I did combine it with another great set – the Vintage Leaves stamp set and Leaflets Framelits. And, once again, the new Paisleys & Posies stepped in to give me a sentiment. Take a look-see:
A friend asked me if I ever get “blocked” – ever not have an idea for a card. Answer: LOTS! Today was…not…one of those days. Sort of. I had an idea in my head – that used the layered die cut that you see here. But the end result has almost no resemblance to what was in my head at the start. 🙂
Not to say I’m not happy with this card, cuz I am. It just isn’t what I expected!
I ended up working loosely to this week’s CAS(E) This Sketch challenge #185:
I saw a video on this layering technique on Jennifer McGuire’s blog (check it out right here) – she used a word die for her center – and I wanted to try it out. I decided to use the oak leaf die from the Leaflets framelits.
To make this, you cut the same die, in the same place on each of your layer colors. In my case, I did two of Chocolate Chip – they ended up on top and bottom, and one each of Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry and Pumpkin Pie. Then I cut each panel in half lengthwise – leaving one Chocolate Chip panel whole to be my base.
Using Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue, I started layering the pieces onto the Chocolate Chip base. I just offset each color by about the same amount. When I was finished, here’s how it looked (well, I’d already embossed it here, but you get my drift!):
At that point (prior to embossing it), I couldn’t really decide what I wanted to do with it. Just cuz I could, I ran it thru the new Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF – and that still didn’t trigger any ideas.
So I got dinner going and let it cook.
The design. Well….and the dinner!
When I sat back down, I decided to cut this in half and use it as the design element in the CAS(E) This Sketch challenge. So I did.
I used a piece of Basic Black card stock and stamped a few of the oak leaves from Vintage Leaves in Versamark ink and heat embossed them in the new Copper Embossing Powder. Then I SNAILd the cable-knit embossed panel to that. The mat for this is another piece of Chocolate Chip card stock, embossed in the Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF.
NOTE: The Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF is a new type of embossing folder for Stampin’ Up! When you get it, you’re going to notice that it’s a lot thicker than a “normal” TIEF. It takes a little different sandwich – I used my Magnetic Platform – then the folder (spine first thru the machine) with my card stock – then one acrylic pad! The resulting embossed design actually looks – and feels – 3D! It really kind of looks like a cable knit sweater. Which is handy, given its name… It’s pretty darned cool, and I’m hoping we see some more folders like this in the future!
I took all the leaves that I’d cut out for my original layered panel and adhered them in a stack with Liquid Glue. Then I cut one more leaf out of Copper Foil, embossed it in the Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF and adhered it to the top of the stack. Since it was really shiny, I rubbed some Early Espresso ink over it with a paper towel – let it dry a bit and wiped it back off. Not much change – but it calmed it down a little! 🙂 I used Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere it in place on the card front.
For my sentiment art, I taped off the word Blessed on the sentiment image in Paisleys & Posies, inked the remainder in Versamark and stamped it on Vellum card stock. I heat embossed it with Copper Stampin’ Emboss Powder. Then I cut a strip 3/8″ wide and ran it thru the back of my Classic Label Punch to punch each end – letting me make a longer sentiment label. I did the same with a piece of Cajun Craze card stock, and used a dab of glue from my Fine Tip Glue Pen on the left end to glue the two pieces together.
I heat embossed two small pinecones from Christmas Pines in Copper on Basic Black and cut them with their matching die from Pretty Pines. Then I used Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere them to the sentiment label.
I used another dab of Liquid Glue to adhere the whole thing to the card front. I needed a little bow, so…I cut one in Crushed Curry using the smaller bow die in Pretty Pines and stuck it on at a jaunty angle.
The finishing touch is a bow from two lengths of Copper Metallic Thread and two of new Black Metallic Thread, adhered with a dab of Liquid Glue. And that was it for the card front!
For the inside, I heat embossed – in Copper – the word Blessed from the sentiment image in Paisleys & Posies in the center of a Very Vanilla panel. Then I added a couple of Vintage Leaves in Crushed Curry and Cajun Craze. I matted it on another piece of Chocolate Chip card stock, that I’d embossed in the Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF.
I SNAILd it into a Crushed Curry card base, SNAILd the card front on – and the card was done!
For my Very Vanilla Medium Envelope, I added another Cajun Craze Vintage Leaves oak leaf to the front…
…and I embossed the flap with that oh-so-cool Cable Knit TIEF!
Et Voila! Vintage Leaves and Christmas Pines come together to create an autumn-flavored card that would be perfect at Thanksgiving! Hope you like.
Between the embossing from the new TIEF and the stack of oak leaves, this is a very textural card. The Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF creates an embossed design that’s so realistic – it makes me hot to look at or feel it! 😉
This catalog has really got some winners in it – I hope you’re making your lists!

Thanks much, Linda! 🙂
And now holly! Nice! And I love the sentiment trilogy, leading up to the one inside.
Yes – it’s a great sentiment image – and the words are separated enough that it makes it pretty easy to cover up the parts you don’t want. Thanks, Mom! 🙂
HOT!! Hang on there girl………getting a little steamy!! Great card…….sometimes you just have to walk away & let things “perk”……..great result. Good luck on that hoarding issue……I might be accused of having the same problem. But, I have done a great deal about it in the last year!!
I’ve got to do the same – it’s giving me fits! Thanks, Karen! 🙂
