Stampin’ Up! Best Catch For You, Dad!

Whoo-hooo!!  It’s Friday again! Happy happy joy joy!

My card today is one of those elusive “masculine” cards.  We all sort of have trouble with those, don’t we?  We like flowers and embellishments and “pretty” colors, right?  But, we don’t usually think of those things when we think of making a card for the dudes in our lives.  So it’s happy that Stampin’ Up! listened and brought us the Best Catch stamp set – handily bundled with the great Catch of the Day Framelits.  And – I added those elements to…Floral Romance Specialty DSP – and made a perfectly masculine card.

Say what??

Take a look-see:

Whatcha think? 🙂

The layout for this one is from this week’s The Paper Players sketch challenge.

I think this card would work for Father’s Day or a birthday, so…I played along with the Watercolor Wednesday Challenge, too.

I started with some Floral Romance Specialty DSP in the pretty (er…handsome!) wood grain pattern and adhered it to a Mossy Meadow mat for the card front.

Then I used some of the leafy paper, matted on Mossy Meadow, for the next layer.

The final layer is a piece of Sahara Sand card stock, embossed in the Corrugated Dynamic TIEF and torn down to size, then adhered with Liquid Glue.

I used some Watercolor paper to create my grasses.  First, with my Aqua Painter, I picked up ink from the lid of my Mossy Meadow ink pad and laid down some streaky color.

Then I cut two grasses with the die from the Catch of the Day Framelits.  I also cut one from some Vellum card stock.

On another piece of Watercolor paper, I stamped the fish in Early Espresso ink and colored him with my Light Mossy Meadow, Crumb Cake and Calypso Coral Stampin’ Blends.  I brushed some Clear Wink of Stella over his scales and cut him with his matching die from Catch of the Day.

I built up my collage, starting with one of the Watercolor grasses, then adding a length of 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon – both adhered with Liquid Glue.  Next, I added the fish with Stampin’ Dimensionals, then layered the Vellum and second watercolor grasses with Liquid Glue and Dimensionals.

The sentiment, from the Best Catch stamp set, I stamped in Mossy Meadow on more of the Wonderful Romance Specialty DSP.  Over the top, I added the lure image in Crumb Cake, then I cut it with a Rectangle Stitched Framelit die and popped it on with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  And that was it for the card front

On the inside, I added a second sentiment from Best Catch in Mossy Meadow to a Very Vanilla panel.  Next to it, using my Stamparatus, I added the fly fisherman image in Crumb Cake ink.

I used Liquid Glue to adhere the panel to a Mossy Meadow mat and into my Sahara Sand card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got another Crumb Cake fisherman on the front…

…and I gave the envelope flap a little more woodsy paper from Floral Romance and a Crumb Cake lure.

Et Voila!  Not gonna fib ya – I love how this one turned out!  Love the images in the Best Catch bundle and being able to cut them so easy with the Catch of the Day Framelits – plus the wonderful grasses…love love love!  Hope you like!

Father’s Day is just around the corner – snap this one up quick like a bunny.  Or a bass…. 😉

Finn Fan Fix

We have a strict no-begging rule here in our home.
I mean – it’s just unseemly.
It’s a heckuva lot easier to type than to enforce.
Especially when popcorn is involved…

  1. GREAT card Mary 😊 Perfect masculine card. Love your layering and everything else about it.

  2. Your card is awesome Mary! Love the design, perfect colors and layering! Poor Finn, he is so deprived that he has to beg for his food. Ha!! 😉

    • stampsnlingers

Yes. Please, sir, may I have another?!? It’s fairly sad… Thanks, Amy! 🙂

  3. Kate

I know one fly fishin’ Dad who would have loved this card.
    Not begging…opportunity-ing. 😉

  4. Beth Kist

Great card! Love all the layers and what you did to make the grass!

  5. Mary, I love, love this card. My morning plans incude making a card for my brother for his birthday, and planned to use Catch of the Day. Ideas rolling around in my head, but why re-invent the wheel? I am CASEing this one! Thank you for the inspiration! (I had already decided to use Wood Textures and Mossy Meadow, but that was as far as I got).

    • stampsnlingers

I know he’s going to love it – thank you so much for the compliment of the CASE, Julie! 🙂

  6. Mary, I like everything about this card. The colors and template are definitely masculine.

  7. Ann Wilcox Schach

Just when I had decided that I really did not need this bundle, you create this absolutely stunning card, Mary! It looks like that fish is just jumping right up out of the water. I love how you created the grass. Thank you so much for using my sketch and for playing with The Paper Players this week!

    • stampsnlingers

Thanks so very much, Ann! That fish and I fought a little until I could get him colored “right”! LOL! Appreciate you stopping by – and thank you for the great sketch! 🙂

  8. Great “Best Catch of the Day” card, Mary! I absolutely love how you brought all the elements together for such a great look!!! Your creation of the grass feature really ties things together! Any guy would love this card. Thank you so much for sharing your creative talents with us at Watercooler Wednesday Challenges!!! -Donna

    • stampsnlingers

Well, thank YOU, Donna, for your very kind words! Appreciate you stopping by! 🙂

  9. This is fabulous! This is the first time I’ve seen anything made with this set…it’s pretty awesome! Perfect masculine card and perfect for our Paper Players sketch! Thanks for playing!

    • stampsnlingers

Thank you so much, LeAnne! Appreciate you coming by to leave such a nice comment. 🙂

  10. Wanda Cullen

Fabulous masculine design and super take on the PP sketch!

    • stampsnlingers

Thanks much, Wanda – appreciate you stopping by! 🙂

  11. Elisha Smith

Great card, Mary! I love the way you colored the fish – perfection! The grasses are really cool too👍👍 We have a strict no begging rule at our house too and it looks exactly like that! Downright pitiful! My month in Florida is drawing to a close – we walked 7.5 miles at three Disney parks today and will likely do the same tomorrow then it’s back to frigid Ohio – ugh!

    • stampsnlingers

Ahh – I envy your vacation at Disney. I swore when we left there after our 2012 vacay that I “had it out of my system”. Turns out…that was only good for a few years! I’m ready to go back there and to Universal! Hope you have a safe trip home, Elisha!! Thanks so much for the kind words! 🙂

  12. Your use of the Wonderful Romance paper with this set is genius, Mary! It’s masculine AND lovely.

  13. Susan K

Zonked out last night before i got to your blog but wanted to be sure i said how much i love this card! Great take on the sketches–I predict a winner–and amazing coloring of the grass and fish. Very creative and just superdeduper.
I’m with Finn–I’ve been known to beg for popcorn too….or maybe he’s just politely asking Dad to share.

    • stampsnlingers

Oh yes – he’s terribly polite. Mixed in with some horribly pitiful! And it works – pretty much every time! Thanks, Susan! 🙂

  14. What a perfect card for a fisherman, Mary! Love all those interesting layers to build up the design! Thanks so much for joining us at Watercooler Wednesday Challenge this week!

    • stampsnlingers

Thanks so much, Helen – appreciate you stopping by! 🙂
