Welcome to the Third Weekly Happy Stampers Blog Hop!  When you read this, I’ll be once again slipping the surlies  – this time heading EAST! 🙂  Will be home in plenty of time to feed the horses and get pony nose kisses!  They’re good for what ails ya, I promise! 😉

We had a fun sketch challenge this week, and since we have so many talented ladies in our group, I know that you’re going to want to head over and see what they’ve all done with it!  At the end of this post, I’ve provided a link to all the ladies’ blogs, so take a minute to wander around blog-hop-ville and maybe even take a moment to leave everyone a comment!  Here’s what we were working to:

Happy Stampers #2 sketch

My take on this went in the direction of welcoming Fall!  So, I combined an old favorite – Lovely as a Tree – with the sentiment from For all Things, with a few touches from the new and beautiful Into the Woods.  Take a look-see:

Lovely as a Tree Hello Fall 1 - Stamps-N-Lingers

I had fun with the beautiful oak tree image in Lovely as a Tree.  This isn’t our oldest and most beloved stamp set for nuthin’!

I cut a strip of Very Vanilla Card Stock to begin my process.  I made it longer than I knew the card was going to be wide.  Did that make sense?  Then, I pulled out my Daffodil Delight, Tangerine Tango and Rich Razzleberry ink pads, and a sponge dauber for each one.  I also got the Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker ready.

For each of the stamped images, the process went like this:

  1.  Use a sponge dauber to liberally apply Daffodil Delight to the leaves portion of the image.
  2.  Use a sponge dauber to less liberally apply Tangerine Tango ink to the leaves.  You’re creating the appearance of a tree that is gradually turning to Fall.  So – I used less of the orange colors.
  3. Use a third sponge dauber to lightly add Rich Razzleberry highlights.  The first time I inked the dauber, I rubbed some of it off on scrap paper, and then oh-so-lightly added some color to the tree leaves.  Go easy with this one – a little goes a long way and can overwhelm the image!
  4. Use the Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker to ink the trunk.
  5. Stamp the image.
  6. Clean the stamp – I used my wet wipes.
  7. Repeat for each image.  I moved my stamp up and down slightly, to change the “height” of the trees.

The trees not only do not have to be the same – they should not be the same!  No real tree is, after all.  Play and enjoy.  This technique worked really well for me!  I think this looks just like an old grove of oaks, greeting Autumn in their Fall finery.

Then I SNAILd the strip onto my piece of the woodgrain design from the Into the Woods DSP and trimmed the excess off both ends.

The sentiment is from For All Things.  I stamped the image in Tangerine Tango on a piece of Very Vanilla Card Stock and then cut it out with the Lots of Labels die.  Then I added some “stitches” with my Soft Suede marker.

I did some laying out – figuring how wide my Into the Woods 3/8″ Cotton Ribbon would be (yes yes – I know.  It’s 3/8″ wide.  Thank you ever so much!! I needed to know where it was going to fall on the card so I could figure how to cut my sentiment label.  Sheesh!)

Lovely as a Tree Hello Fall 3 - Stamps-N-Lingers

I turned one of the larger Metallic Foil Doilies over and sponged the heck out of the back with my Soft Suede ink.  I mean I really laid it on there – the back has a shiny coating and I feared the ink would just lay on top and never “stick”.  But – I sponged it on there – and then I went and made dinner!  When I got back – it was all dry and just like I wanted.  Two birds – one stone, as it were! 🙂

I used some Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere the sentiment label to my sponged doily, cut it down to the size I’d already worked out, and SNAILd it to the card front.  I added one tiny Pearl Basic Jewel to the sentiment label.Lovely as a Tree Hello Fall 2 - Stamps-N-Lingers

To add the ribbon, I just ran a small line of the Liquid Glue down the paper, laid the Into the Woods 3/8″ Cotton Ribbon down and wrapped it around the card front, securing it in the back with a little more glue.  Over that, I ran some of the 1/4″ Early Espresso Cotton Ribbon – again adhering it with glue on the front and the back.  Finally, I wrapped Gold Metallic Thread around both ribbon layers – I gave it about 5 wraps – and secured it in the back with scotch tape.

From there, I just SNAILd the card front to my Rich Razzleberry Card Stock mat and then popped it all onto my Crushed Curry card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals!

The inside is another piece of Very Vanilla, SNAILd to a mat of Rich Razzleberry.  I stamped a second sentiment from For All Things in Soft Suede and then I inked up the oak leaf image from Lovely as a Tree in the same manner that I’d done the trees on the front.  I stamped that over the sentiment and….the card itself was done!

For the envelope, I embellished a Very Vanilla Medium Envelope with a couple more oak leaf images on the front….

…and added some more of the Into the Woods DSP woodgrain design as a liner.

Lovely as a Tree Hello Fall 7 - Stamps-N-Lingers

Et Voila!  An old stamp, a newer stamp and a brand new DSP all come together to welcome my favorite time of the year! I hope that you enjoyed seeing this card as much as I enjoyed making it!  And that if Lovely as a Tree and For all Things are not part of your tool kit, you’ll consider adding them right away!

With that, please head over to the other ladies’ blogs and see what they’ve put together for you.  I know you’re going to be impressed!

P.S.  Wanted to share with you the view from my hotel room!  I was on the 22nd floor.  I did an electronic check in and picked my room – after careful consideration of the orientation of the hotel versus the location of the ocean.  I did a good job!  Of course, when we arrived at the hotel at around 7pm – yes, very very long day – my room wasn’t ready.  Huh?  So we went and got some dinner and took the car back.  Got back around 9pm.

Want to see the view?

Yes, that’s the ocean right there!  Complete with tall-masted sailing ship.  Pretty spectacular – bet it would be super awesome in the daylight!!

If you’re ever in the San Diego airport area – you need to check out the Crest Cafe.  I had the best meal – chicken and waffles.  The chicken had something a little spicy in the batter – and it was honey glazed.  Sweet and spicy and perfectly crunchy.  And the waffle was wondrous.  It’s a place that Guy Fieri had on his show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.  So so good!

And, that concludes my Travelog for this trip! 😉
