Stampin’ Up! Cruise News from Skagway….

Mornin’, y’all!  When this posts – we’ll be waking up for the last time aboard the Explorer! 🙁  It’s been so much fun – and I can’t believe it’s almost over!  Yesterday was Victoria, B.C. and the Butchart Gardens.  Beautiful!

But – I wanted to share Skagway with you – it was so wildly beautiful – and we got to see a tiny sliver of The Yukon, too!

Upon arrival, it was instantly obvious that Skagway itself is tiny – and, in fact, we learned that its only industry is tourism.  And that’s about a 5 month season.

The little town itself has tried to remain true to it’s gold mining heritage and is really quite cute.

How about a house made with driftwood??

Our first excursion of the day was the White Pass and Yukon Railroad train – about a 3 hour trip up into the mountains above Skagway.

As you might imagine – the scenery was spectacular!

The track winds its way around and thru the mountains…

…crossed a high wooden trestle bridge and traversed a few tunnels!

We turned around at the US/Canadian border – literally.

They unhooked the engine and ran it back to the other end of the train – so the back became the front and we picked our way back down the track from whence we’d come!

After some delicious fried Halibut sandwiches at a little spot across from the Happy Endings saloon – it’s a real thing, please don’t be offended!

…we took a Hummer excursion out into British Columbia and on into the Yukon!  The lakes are amazing – a bright Tempting Turquoise blue (the color is caused by silt and minerals from the glaciers that feed so many of the lakes) or dark serene blue – and the mountains….wow!

Being tourists, we took a few reminder-of-our-trip pictures…

…at Bridal Veil Falls…

…and with Amy and her husband Lance at the signs into The Yukon and back into Alaska!

We also saw some bears!!  The best sighting was the mama and her little kid.  Too cute!  Of course, we say this from the relative safety of our vehicles!

They didn’t give much of a fig about us – but…did (accidentally, I’m quite sure!) strike a pose!

We returned to the ship – happy, but pretty much exhausted.  Four excursions in two days….that’s a lot!  But – the memories we have are more than worth the tired!  We got two days at sea to recover!

Hope you’re enjoying the vicarious trip to Alaska!  I’ll have some pictures of the Tracy Arm Ford and Sawyer Glacier, plus the Gardens and the Chihuly exhibit in Seattle on my Sunday post.  So…be sure to tune in!

Remember – as my days on the ship wind down – so does your chance to gather up Double Peppermint Rewards Points!

Just sayin’…

Thanks so much, Karen – I was happy to share with all my friends!! 🙂

  3. Memories enough to last a lifetime. Your photos brought back MY memories of the AK cruise with my sisters-in-law. That trestle scared me to pieces. I can see why they called it Dead Horse Trail. Beautiful scenery. I can’t imagine traversing that part of geography by foot and horseback. Nor, building the railroad! I am so glad you got to experience this!

    • stampsnlingers

It was wonderful, indeed! Glad it brought back good memories, Julie – thanks! 🙂
