Finn Fan Fix
So – last night, I decided to hit the bed before Wayne got home. I let Finn out into the night – with his blinking collar on.
He took two bounds and started barking like a fool.
Folks – I’m talking deep throated Rottweiler/Doberman/German Shepherd-worthy barks, punctuated by fierce growls.
Uhm…wanna talk about something getting your attention?
It’s like…when you’re home alone at night and your cat is sleeping on your lap.
And then suddenly she raises her head and stares intently at “SOMEthing” over your shoulder.
Yea. LIKE THAT.
So – I called him back to me – which he obeyed reluctantly – still staring out across the driveway and barking.
I went into Offensive mode. Ready?
“I HAVE A GUN” – I shouted authoritatively into the darkness.
No response (thank God).
“YOU’D BETTER GET OUTTA HERE – I’M LETTING MY DOG GO”!!
Don’t snicker…remember this?
Only WE know that he’s just smiling!
And then…”FINN – GO! GET ‘EM”
To which he turned and gave me the “say what now?!?” look.
I decided to retreat. Locked the door. Turned off all the house lights. Turned on every exterior light. Skulked around peering out every window. I’ve seen some movies so I knew exactly what to do!
Decided the heck with this. Put on coat. Headed outside with dog.
As soon as I stepped further away from the door – mind you, Finn is back staring and barking – I saw the intruder.
Have I mentioned that the wind was blowing like a banshee??
Ladies and gentlemen – there have been documented home invasions in our area recently. The suspect is a….
…blue tarp.
Hunkering threateningly in the shadows just outside the reach of the security light. I couldn’t see it until I got out further. The Man saw it though. And he was giving it holy what-for!
Y’all – I am SO glad I hadn’t called 911 and told them to just crash thru the gate! LOL!
Today – in the light – I let Finn see the monster. His reaction was appropriate.
That booger’ll think twice before bothering us again, I’ll wager! 😉

Surely worthy of a short story…which it already IS!… and maybe even a TV episode. The old Suspense Theater ( before your time. On radio) comes to mind. Having fetched the greener a time or two myself, while a Bouvier carried on, I can relate! You need a sign like mine…on the gate…that says “this property protected by an armed American citizen. Absolutely nothing in here is worth dying for”. Glad the tarp invasion subdued by the resident guard-Finn!!!
I do need that sign, I guess. Although…I’m not sure the tarp can read… 😉 And that PARTICULAR tarp took off with it’s corner between it’s other corners. I don’t think it’ll be bothering us again! 🙂 Thanks, Mom!
