Stampin’ Up! Best Birds and Better Together Sympathy Card

Mornin’, y’all!  Happy Friday!  Although it wasn’t a 4-day work week for me, it sort of felt like it – Monday was a government holiday and all the government folks had it off – so it was quiet!!

Before we get going – I wanted to say a little something about the videos I’ve promised – just to manage expectations a bit.  So…I am going to be doing them, but…it’s going to be a little bit before you see the first one.  Mostly cuz I’m going to be out of town for most of next week!  I promise I’m going to do them – I’ll try to commit to doing my first one the week after next.

But, you guys have to promise me something!  Promise you’ll cut me a little slack for a few videos, okay?  I know it’s going to take me a minute to get comfy doing them, so if I sound like a total dork on the first….let’s call it 5 videos..no make it 10! …just smile to yourself and shake your head.

Okay – so for today, I needed a sympathy card to send to Igor, my Russian son.  His Russian grandmother passed away last week. 🙁  So I needed a sympathy card.  I got a little inspiration from a couple of challenges, so I pulled out my Best Birds bundle and the Better Together sentiment stamp set.  Take a look-see:

Those challenges I mentioned – the first is the TGIF Challenge – but I missed the deadline to enter my card! 🙁

And the second one, from Hand Stamped Sentiments, gave me my color palette.

I started off with a piece of Tip Top Taupe paper from the Succulent Garden DSP (man, am I going to miss this paper when it goes!!).  Using the  scattered dots image in Best Birds, I inked the stamp with Tip Top Taupe, stamped it off once and then stamped it on the DSP.  I did that twice on a diagonal.  Then I SNAILd it to a Tip Top Taupe mat.

Across that, with a little bit of Liquid Glue, I adhered a length of 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon.  While I had that burlap out, I cut another piece and then pulled out a bunch of the strands to use a little later.

For the art, I first used the cross-hatch image in the Best Birds stamp set and stamped it twice in Mint Macaron on Whisper White card stock.  Then I cut it out with a Stitched Shapes Framelits oval.  I inked the sentiment from Best Birds with Basic Black Archival Ink and stamped it on the bottom of the oval and matted it on a scalloped Tip Top Taupe oval, cut with the Ovals Layering Framelits.

Then I took those strands that I’d pulled out of the burlap ribbon and, using a bunch of Glue Dots on the back of my oval, made a series of loops.  I wanted to create a sort of stylized bird nest!  When I had that done, I popped it over the burlap ribbon with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I pulled out the coordinating Birds & Blooms Thinlits and cut the bird from a piece of the Sweet Sugarplum Glimmer Paper (new for Sale-A-Bration and you can get it for FREE!).  With a wedge of Stampin’ Sponge, I sponged the edges of the bird (and very lightly on the wing) with Rich Razzleberry ink.

I made a branch by stamping it (it’s part of the Best Birds set) in Tip Top Taupe on a piece of Very Vanilla and then cutting it out with the matching die in Birds & Blooms.  Then I filled the branch in with the Tip Top Taupe Stampin’ Write Marker, and the leaves with my Mint Macaron Marker.

I adhered the branch and then the bird to the oval with Liquid Glue, and the card front was done!

On the inside, I stamped a Whisper White panel with the cross-hatch image in stamped-off-once Mint Macaron and some scattered splotches in stamped-off-once Tip Top Taupe.  Then I added a sentiment from the Better Together stamp set in Basic Black Archival Ink.  On the bottom, I added a tiny little Mint Macaron Glimmer Paper bird, that I’d cut with the Birds & Blooms die.

I SNAILd the panel to a Tip Top Taupe mat and into my Mint Macaron card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got another little Mint Macaron Glimmer bird…

…and I added some more of the Succulent Garden DSP to the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  This card is destined for my son and his mother, so I felt pretty okay with it having a bit of a feminine feel with the Glimmer Paper.  I think it’s organic enough to appeal to Igor, too.  I hope you like!

There are two things I’d feel bad about if I thought you’d missed out – the first is my Free Shipping offer.  Take advantage of this, folks – it not only gets you free shipping, but that $50 order gets you a free SAB goody (like the Glimmer Paper Pack)!  And it’s gone Monday night.

The second thing I do not want you to miss out on….the super duper sign up special going on thru the end of March.  We know the Starter Kit is already a great deal, but when you add in any two stamp sets for free, that really takes it over the top.  But, it won’t last forever – and the end will be here before you know it! 🙂

FINN-FAN FIX….

Finn was outside most of the day with his dad, doing man-work.  They did go to the post office for the mom (which is, in fact, also man-work!) and got some fuel for all their tools and equipment.

Upon their return, they did a little mech-a-nickin’ on the old dump truck.  They need it running smooth for when they start moving lumber.

Man-work is exhausting…

I LOVE the Best Birds set. Use it a lot. Surprise!
Stock up on the Succulenst DSP!
Oh, yeah, your card is lovely and it does look like a stylized bird nest. Actually, it is better than lovely, it is a very appropriate, beautiful, yet understated, sympathy card. They are not always easy to do.
Finn looks bushed! Hard work that.

  3. So sorry for your and his loss. Your card has a peaceful, soothing quality about it. That darn job gets in your way BUT it also gets you more stash 🙂 Can’t wait for your videos. Since I do a lot of cutting, there will definitely be slack in the mix for you. Just promise you won’t slack off on your beautiful cards.

    • Thanks, Karen – I didn’t know her, but I’m sure he and his mom are grieving! Yep – darned job that pays for the Stampin’ Up! goodies!! I won’t slack off on the cards – promise! 🙂

  4. Brenda B

Really like your card colors d design! Also, I so look forward to your Finn stories even though they have moved from their top spot. Keep sharing and we will patiently wait for videos — life tends to get in the way for doing all that we want!

    • Thanks, Brenda! Finn didn’t want to detract from the cards and Stampin’ Up!, since that’s why the blog started in the first place! He’s a giver that way! Appreciate your patience on the videos! Darned life!! 🙂

  5. Very pretty! Love the glimmer birds, they are perfect for this card!

  6. Wow! What a fabulous card! I love how you combined the glimmer paper with the bird image. So pretty! Thanks for playing at Hand Stamped Sentiments.

  7. This is so beautiful, Mary! Every single element on your card is perfect! I especially love the cross hatch background behind the bird and the twine accent. Thanks for playing along with us at Hand Stamped Sentiments!

  8. Great way to use that glimmer paper. Can’t wait to get mine! Love the fact this could be a masculine card. Thanks for playing with us at HSS.
