Hello – and welcome to the Happy Stampers Blog Hop for March. Our theme today is Spring or Easter and….organizing and storing your crafting supplies. I decided to do an Easter project for you and, since I’m not actually at home….I’m going to show you my crafting-area-away-from-crafting-area in the hotel. It’s not gorgeous, but it works! A bunch of us are sharing with you today, so be sure to check out their blogs when you’re done here. And, in the spirit of blog hops everywhere (and chocolate-filled Easter Baskets!) – we’ve all got a little blog candy to give away, too!
So, settle in – get you a cuppa something hot, and let’s get started. I saw a card on Pinterest with a technique that intrigued me, so that was my starting point today. I used the beautiful Indescribable Gift stamp set and I kept the card quite clean and simple. Take a look-see:
I cut an oval from a piece of Whisper White card stock with my new Ovals Framelit Dies. This piece I adhered – very lightly with a little dab o’ SNAIL – to another piece of the white card stock. I didn’t want it permanently stuck down yet – just needed it to hold still while I stamped and colored it. Then, I inked up the pretty flower image with Blackberry Bliss Ink, and stamped it on the layered piece – making sure to get the stamp part way on and part way off the oval. That’s total permission to go OUTSIDE the lines!
With my image stamped, I colored it in with my new Stampin’ Write Markers. I used Sahara Sand on the branches; Pink Pirouette, Blushing Bride and Calypso Coral on the flowers; Wild Wasabi and Pear Pizzazz on the leaves; and some Daffodil Delight for the stamen in the open flowers. I was really worried that without the Blendabilities, it would be awfully difficult to get the shading and blending that I wanted. But, I just worked kind of quickly and in small areas – and I think it turned out quite pretty!
You can see from the picture above that to permanently adhere the oval, I used SU Dimensionals. I love the 3-dimensional look it gave the card! I SNAIL’d the layered art piece to a mat of Wild Wasabi CS (love the Blackberry Bliss combo with the Wild Wasabi!) and then wrapped a strand of the velvet “ribbon” from the Artisan Embellishment Kit (Occasions Catalog) around it twice, securing it in the back with some tape. I debated a little bow, and decided against it – I like the kind of tailored look of the plain ribbon. I decorated the largest flower center with a tiny Pearl Basic Jewel and popped the entire piece onto the Blackberry Bliss card base with some more Dimensionals – and the front was done!
The inside got a piece of Whisper White card stock, that I stamped in Blackberry Bliss with the Indescribable Gift sentiment and another image of the flowers. Then I colored in this flower the same way I did the front. And that was it. Done!
And then… I made a fateful mistake. I decided it was time to have a little lunch. So, I carefully placed my lovely card into my “photo booth” – you’ll see a picture of it down below – and got myself a little bowl of ramen noodles. I returned to my spot on the sofa – the photo booth was on the table next to said sofa. As I was going to sit down, the fork in the ramen bowl…flipped. I promise, it did a double half-gainer, twist with a curl, and then a backwards somersault – the Russian judge gave it a 10! And where do you suppose it ended up? Yup. It flew OVER the side of the “photo booth” and landed inside. Smack. Dab. On. My. Beautiful. Card. Ramen noodles. On my card. And I can tell you what, folks – there ain’t no getting that off. No way no how. So – the pretty card you see in this post is actually the SECOND iteration. I said “Golly!” a few times. If you catch my drift!
Anyway – note to self. “Photo Booth” and card must be VERY far from Mary and food. I have a similar issue with t-shirts, but…that’s a ‘nother story! I think the card turned out very nice the second time, too!
So – on to the second part of our hop for today. As you all know, I’ve been on an extended business trip for a while now – and will be for a while longer! But, I just could NOT bear the thought of not being able to stamp and make cards and blog while I was gone. So….I boxed up all my Stampin’ Up! supplies – yes, even the Big Shot (don’t leave home without it!) – and mailed it all to myself at the hotel. When I walked into the room, here’s what I had to work with:
Well, that’s a nice spot to eat a little bite of dinner – but it’s sure no crafting spot! I went down to the front desk and asked them if they had a banquet table that I could borrow for my time here. The next day, when I got home from work, I had the exact thing I was looking for. I spent a few minutes unpacking and arranging and re-arranging and organizing and….here’s what I’m working with now:
It’s not too bad, really. If I could change something, I’d have a desk chair that rolls – that would make it easier to turn around for my “stuff” behind me while I’m working. But, it’s okay! You can see my “photo booth” on the left side in the bright light. Here’s what it looks like:
It’s just a few pieces of white card stock, taped together, with my Ott Lite over the top of it. Actually, I use the same setup at home – but I have two Ott Lites there. I didn’t want to try to ship both of them. (I got this “photo booth” idea from Amy Koenders’ blog – thanks, Amy!) Just beware – it is NOT up to the challenge of ramen noodles. Just sayin’.
Here’s what I store my stuff in – I have one for ink pads, embossing folders/dies and for embellishments. It’s an ever-renewing resource at my house/hotel…..
Works pretty good – has a lid. Doesn’t travel well – “lost” one in the transition from home to hotel. Sadly, that means I’ll be forced to keep eating a biscotti with my morning coffee. Darn the luck! 😉
So there you have it. I have great aspirations to a beautiful crafting room with oodles and boodles of perfectly organized storage from Ikea and Stampin’ Up and http://www.stampnstorage.com. But for now, I have my SU! things and a place to use them – I’m good! 🙂

Love the technique on your card and the story. I not sure could pack up that much stuff and ship to myself, but then again my job never requires me to be out of town more than a day or two so I just work on a current project while out of town. I have a file cabinet with hanging file folders holding all my 8 1/2 X 11 card stock and scraps, right next to my desk, I found this works best for me, to have all my colors close at hand.
It was a bit of a pain, no doubt. And certainly not something I’d do for a day or two – I’m impressed that you can figure out what to take to work on a current project! 🙂 It was a lot of stuff – but it was easy to decide WHAT to take – I took almost all of it! Stamp n storage has great storage solutions–I have the ink pad/marker holder & their magnet cards for my framelits–I’d love to have several other things they have but for now that is what I have been able to afford 🙂 Thanks for the chance at the goodies–I haven’t tried those out yet & would love to!

I loved reading your funny story and seeing the second version of your beautiful card. Right now I store my paper in hanging files and other items in desk drawers. Some day I’ll invest in some other storage solutions for markers and ink but have not researched them yet.

Wow what an experience. I know from experience it is not easy to take everything you might need when setting up outside the safe area of our craft rooms. Last fall my girl friend and I took a lot of our wonderful stampin up products to my park model trailer to have a fun weekend in the fall to make Christmas cards. One of the questions we kept asking each other was – did you bring ????? or did you bring ???? – lots of laughing and sharing. You did an amazing job of setting up in a hotel room. I am a huge fan of Stampin up punches and found the best way to store these is one the Reflections storage containers that is offered from Michaels craft store.

My favorite storage solution is my friend Angela and the Ikea catalog. She drove down to my house a forty-five minute drive to help measure my craft room and configure the most storage solutions we could into the space.My contribution was to write it down. My arm was in a sling recovering from rotator repair surgery. Love your card and creative stamping space!

Beautiful card is so very spring!! I bought a beautiful cherry oblong box at a second hand store with several compartments. It has some beautiful detail with metal décor on the outside. I keep my scissors, glues, stamp cleansers, blocks and tape and several other small things. It sets across the back of my table like it was made for it. Always easy to grab and find what I need. Love it!!

I don’t know if this is my favorite but my ‘newest’ storage is using the Sesmark Rice Crackers package to hold my Washi Tape. I can get at least sixteen rolls in one package and they fit perfect. Love all your organizing in the hotel room!

I like to store my matching dies with the stamp set, so I put a piece of magnetic sheet inside the plastic cases and they are right there when I need them. Love you blog and card ideas!
I do that as well – well, store the dies in with the stamps. I’m going to try the magnetic sheet idea – that would keep them much more corralled than when they’re just in there loose like I have them now. Thanks for the tip! 🙂

My fav craft organization tool is very simple… I store my ribbons on coat hangers that were originally designed for slacks. It makes them very simple to find when I am looking for a particular color. I’ve also learned (the hard way) to not have food or drink nearby when I’m crafting! I love the SU! Ink storage but am ready for a major makeover.

Love your card, the coloring is beautiful. I have a magnetic board on the wall in my craft room for my basic framelits, circles, ovals, etc. now I need something for my ribbons and punches.

Beautiful card Mary! I think your temporary crafting space is awesome! It’s amazing what we crafters can come up with to be able to continue to play with our paper. I have plastic gutter material screwed to my wall to hold ribbon spools. It works great, no dowels to feed the spools on and I can easily see and access all of my ribbon. Great inexpensive solution!

The ArtBin Magnetic Die Storage Case holds my Framelits and Thinlits dies. Embossing folders, punches and stamp sets are labeled and stored in clear plastic Snapware containers. BigZ dies are kept in a Sizzix Die Storage Box. Recently, I purchased a small Sizzix Storage Box to hold Washi Tape. The Stamp-n-Storage products are on my wish list.

Oh, gosh! What a story to go with your cute card. And the fact that you sent all your stamping stuff is amazing. Well, what we won’t do to be able to stamp! Right now my favorite storage system is having my ink pads in old soda wooden boxes turned on their sides so that I have them on my desk and easily reached.

Mary, I absolutely ENJOYED reading your blog! I laughed so hard reading your gymnastic fork story!! Luckily, I had placed my coffee down when I got to that part. I just busted in laughter!! Btw I just wanted to add on to the tip of putting a magnetic sheet in the stamp case. I also do that for the coordinating sets. But in addition, I take a see-through colorful sticky note flag and take the stamp sheet out and place the flag right over the name on the spine of the case. I use pink flags and you can still clearly see the name and doing this allows me to know that these stamp sets have the framelits. Sometimes it is so hard to keep track of what we have and this allows me to see in one glance that this stamp set has the matching framelit inside. The other framelits I have on a magnetic board on the wall which are easily visible.

My favorite storage solution is Art Bin containers. I have absolutely everything in them and they stack so nicely. Every one is labeled so I know exactly what is in each one. Thanks for the chance to win blog candy!

Lovely card and WONDERFUL story! Oh my!! What an adventure that was! I love love love your need to stamp while you are away! A girl after my heart!!! I too have been known to take more stamping supplies in my suitcase than anything else….fills the void when you are in a hotel! Nice they were accomodating!
My favorite storage right now is my empty Hills Bros cappuccino containers. I store my copics in them on its side and stack them……guess I dring a lot of coffee! Maybe I need some biscotti to go with it!
