Happy Easter and How To Set Up Shop in a Hotel Room!

Happy Stampers Blog Hop Banner

Hello – and welcome to the Happy Stampers Blog Hop for March.  Our theme today is Spring or Easter and….organizing and storing your crafting supplies.  I decided to do an Easter project for you and, since I’m not actually at home….I’m going to show you my crafting-area-away-from-crafting-area in the hotel.  It’s not gorgeous, but it works!  A bunch of us are sharing with you today, so be sure to check out their blogs when you’re done here.  And, in the spirit of blog hops everywhere (and chocolate-filled Easter Baskets!) – we’ve all got a little blog candy to give away, too!

So, settle in – get you a cuppa something hot, and let’s get started.  I saw a card on Pinterest with a technique that intrigued me, so that was my starting point today.  I used the beautiful Indescribable Gift stamp set and I kept the card quite clean and simple.  Take a look-see:

Happy Easter Outside 1 watermarked

I cut an oval from a piece of Whisper White card stock with my new Ovals Framelit Dies.  This piece I adhered – very lightly with a little dab o’ SNAIL – to another piece of the white card stock.  I didn’t want it permanently stuck down yet – just needed it to hold still while I stamped and colored it.  Then, I inked up the pretty flower image with Blackberry Bliss Ink, and stamped it on the layered piece – making sure to get the stamp part way on and part way off the oval.  That’s total permission to go OUTSIDE the lines!

With my image stamped, I colored it in with my new Stampin’ Write Markers.  I used Sahara Sand on the branches; Pink Pirouette, Blushing Bride and Calypso Coral on the flowers; Wild Wasabi and Pear Pizzazz on the leaves; and some Daffodil Delight for the stamen in the open flowers.  I was really worried that without the Blendabilities, it would be awfully difficult to get the shading and blending that I wanted. But, I just worked kind of quickly and in small areas – and I think it turned out quite pretty!

You can see from the picture above that to permanently adhere the oval, I used SU Dimensionals.  I love the 3-dimensional look it gave the card! I SNAIL’d the layered art piece to a mat of Wild Wasabi CS (love the Blackberry Bliss combo with the Wild Wasabi!) and then wrapped a strand of the velvet “ribbon” from the Artisan Embellishment Kit (Occasions Catalog) around it twice, securing it in the back with some tape.  I debated a little bow, and decided against it – I like the kind of tailored look of the plain ribbon.  I decorated the largest flower center with a tiny Pearl Basic Jewel and popped the entire piece onto the Blackberry Bliss card base with some more Dimensionals – and the front was done!

Happy Easter Outside 1 watermarked

The inside got a piece of Whisper White card stock, that I stamped in Blackberry Bliss with the Indescribable Gift sentiment and another image of the flowers.  Then I colored in this flower the same way I did the front.  And that was it.  Done!

And then… I made a fateful mistake.  I decided it was time to have a little lunch.  So, I carefully placed my lovely card into my “photo booth” – you’ll see a picture of it down below – and got myself a little bowl of ramen noodles.  I returned to my spot on the sofa – the photo booth was on the table next to said sofa.  As I was going to sit down, the fork in the ramen bowl…flipped.  I promise, it did a double half-gainer, twist with a curl, and then a backwards somersault – the Russian judge gave it a 10!  And where do you suppose it ended up?  Yup.  It flew OVER the side of the “photo booth” and landed inside.  Smack.  Dab.  On.  My.  Beautiful. Card.  Ramen noodles.  On my card.  And I can tell you what, folks – there ain’t no getting that off.  No way no how.  So – the pretty card you see in this post is actually the SECOND iteration.  I said “Golly!” a few times. If you catch my drift!

Anyway – note to self.  “Photo Booth” and card must be VERY far from Mary and food.  I have a similar issue with t-shirts, but…that’s a ‘nother story!  I think the card turned out very nice the second time, too!

Happy Easter Outside 2 watermarked

So – on to the second part of our hop for today.  As you all know, I’ve been on an extended business trip for a while now – and will be for a while longer!  But, I just could NOT bear the thought of not being able to stamp and make cards and blog while I was gone.  So….I boxed up all my Stampin’ Up! supplies – yes, even the Big Shot (don’t leave home without it!) – and mailed it all to myself at the hotel.  When I walked into the room, here’s what I had to work with:

Hotel Before craft area 1 watermarked Hotel Before Crafting area 2 watermarked

Well, that’s a nice spot to eat a little bite of dinner – but it’s sure no crafting spot!  I went down to the front desk and asked them if they had a banquet table that I could borrow for my time here.  The next day, when I got home from work, I had the exact thing I was looking for.  I spent a few minutes unpacking and arranging and re-arranging and organizing and….here’s what I’m working with now:

Hotel crafting area 2 watermarked Hotel Crafting area 1 watermarked

It’s not too bad, really.  If I could change something, I’d have a desk chair that rolls – that would make it easier to turn around for my “stuff” behind me while I’m working.  But, it’s okay!  You can see my “photo booth” on the left side in the bright light.  Here’s what it looks like:

Photo Booth watermarked

It’s just a few pieces of white card stock, taped together, with my Ott Lite over the top of it.  Actually, I use the same setup at home – but I have two Ott Lites there.  I didn’t want to try to ship both of them. (I got this “photo booth” idea from Amy Koenders’ blog – thanks, Amy!) Just beware – it is NOT up to the challenge of ramen noodles.  Just sayin’.

Here’s what I store my stuff in – I have one for ink pads, embossing folders/dies and for embellishments.  It’s an ever-renewing resource at my house/hotel…..

Boscotti watermarked

Works pretty good – has a lid.  Doesn’t travel well – “lost” one in the transition from home to hotel.  Sadly, that means I’ll be forced to keep eating a biscotti with my morning coffee.  Darn the luck! 😉

So there you have it.  I have great aspirations to a beautiful crafting room with oodles and boodles of perfectly organized storage from Ikea and Stampin’ Up and http://www.stampnstorage.com.  But for now, I have my SU! things and a place to use them – I’m good! 🙂

We’re down to the wire for Sale-A-Bration folks – don’t miss out!  SAB ends next Tuesday, 31 Mar!  You can see a final update from my latest blog post from last Tuesday here.

BLENDABILITIES DISCONTINUED

You’ve been reading that the Blendies have been on ordering hold, due to quality issues in manufacturing. Due to the nature of the defect, Stampin’ Up! has concluded that difficulties, dissatisfaction, and product returns will only become more widespread. The manufacturer is unable to correct the problem in a manner the company is certain would meet our high quality standards and provide us with a stable, long-term solution. Therefore, after a great deal of deliberation and in order to prevent further disappointment, the Blendabilities product line has been discontinued. If you have Blendabilities that you feel are defective, please let me know and I’ll guide you through what to do next. Hopefully SU will find a new source for alcohol markers – you’ll know just as soon as I do!

Love the technique on your card and the story. I not sure could pack up that much stuff and ship to myself, but then again my job never requires me to be out of town more than a day or two so I just work on a current project while out of town. I have a file cabinet with hanging file folders holding all my 8 1/2 X 11 card stock and scraps, right next to my desk, I found this works best for me, to have all my colors close at hand.

    • It was a bit of a pain, no doubt. And certainly not something I’d do for a day or two – I’m impressed that you can figure out what to take to work on a current project! 🙂 It was a lot of stuff – but it was easy to decide WHAT to take – I took almost all of it! Thanks for stopping by – love the idea of having your CS in hanging files! 🙂

  2. Love your card Mary and one of my favorite techniques, you did a lovely job with it and I Love how you have your craft space set up in the hotel, that’s amazing to be that organized to mail that to yourself, good for you!….

    • Thank you, Sandi! It’s very comforting, really, to know it’s just there every day when I get back to the hotel. Can’t have the kitties or the dog or the ponies….but I CAN have my SU!

  3. marge

    wow…that’s something to pack up…love it….

  4. Melanie R

Enjoyed reading of your experience… you would not have been able to purposely flip those ramen noodles into that light box if your life depended on it! Your card is so pretty – love the colors!

    • Right?!? That’s exactly what I thought as I stood there just staring at the result of my inadvertent, not-to-be-duplicated prowess. Thanks for the kind words, Melanie! 🙂

  5. Your card is just beautiful Mary! I laughed a little (again) at the ramen noodle story…I will definitely take note that the photo booth does not mix well with noodles. 😉 I love your little stamping space too! It’s so neat to see how much you can pack into on little hotel room. So glad that you were able to get everything out there safely. We look forward to you returning to Atlanta to stamp with us soon! 🙂

    • Thanks, Amy. It helps that all the stamp boxes are so easily kept tidy and lined up. It’s fun to be able to do a little something in the evening – helps me relax after the day. I, too, am looking forward to getting home and maybe being able to partake in some of the group activities in person! 🙂

  6. I love this stamp! Beautiful card. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Andrea H

Stamp n storage has great storage solutions–I have the ink pad/marker holder & their magnet cards for my framelits–I’d love to have several other things they have but for now that is what I have been able to afford 🙂 Thanks for the chance at the goodies–I haven’t tried those out yet & would love to!

    • Andrea – I definitely covet the ink pad/refill/marker combo storage cabinet. I think it looks like an awesome way to keep everything tidy and organized. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment – and good luck in the drawing! 🙂

  8. Janae

I like to keep my cardstock in hanging file folders with the scrap pieces in the front of the folder for when I need a small piece 🙂

  9. Lydia

I have a sorter on top of my desk that I keep my papers sorted in so I can see what I have

  10. Kristen

Great blog story! For storage I use an album with a magnet sheet for the framelits and a file cabinet for paper – easy access…

  11. Linda C.

I loved reading your funny story and seeing the second version of your beautiful card. Right now I store my paper in hanging files and other items in desk drawers. Some day I’ll invest in some other storage solutions for markers and ink but have not researched them yet.

  12. nancy p

Such a beautiful card and fabulous idea to keep stamping away from home! You are one organized lady ;-).

  13. Marian

Wow what an experience. I know from experience it is not easy to take everything you might need when setting up outside the safe area of our craft rooms. Last fall my girl friend and I took a lot of our wonderful stampin up products to my park model trailer to have a fun weekend in the fall to make Christmas cards. One of the questions we kept asking each other was – did you bring ????? or did you bring ???? – lots of laughing and sharing. You did an amazing job of setting up in a hotel room. I am a huge fan of Stampin up punches and found the best way to store these is one the Reflections storage containers that is offered from Michaels craft store.

  14. Sandi

Beautiful card. Thank you for sharing.

  15. rosemarie c

My favorite storage solution is my friend Angela and the Ikea catalog. She drove down to my house a forty-five minute drive to help measure my craft room and configure the most storage solutions we could into the space. My contribution was to write it down. My arm was in a sling recovering from rotator repair surgery. Love your card and creative stamping space!

    • Gosh – what a boon! And what a great friend to have! Sounds like you’ve got an awesome stamping/crafting spot. I hope your shoulder is fully healed now! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. 🙂

  16. Donna

luv the card and the su traveling ideas

  17. Babe O'Mara

Fabulous card. Love it. I don’t have a favorite storage solution. Still working on my craft room.

  18. Kim Baker

I covet the stamp n storage solutions. Someday….Love your blog. TFS everything! 🙂

  19. Therese Hoffman

Your card is beautiful. Your story was fun to read though I’m sure those gosh words were flying.
What I can’t live without if first my stamp n storage combo stamp pad unit that holds the markers and refills and then their punch storage. They hold so much but take up very little room. So worth the money. Thanks for the story and chance to win!

    • Ahh – two of the items from Stamp-N-Storage that are definitely on my wish list. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment – and good luck in the candy draw! 🙂

  20. Love your card. I could never get it to line up that well. It is great that you can still stamp and blog while on travel.

    • I used the TLAR approach to get it to line up. That’s the “That Looks About Right” method! Kinda got lucky, too! And, if it weren’t for my Mac Laptop….blogging on the road would be darned near impossible! Thanks for taking time to stop by and leave a comment, Donna! 🙂

  21. Diane

Beautiful card is so very spring!! I bought a beautiful cherry oblong box at a second hand store with several compartments. It has some beautiful detail with metal décor on the outside. I keep my scissors, glues, stamp cleansers, blocks and tape and several other small things. It sets across the back of my table like it was made for it. Always easy to grab and find what I need. Love it!!

    • Diane – sounds like a beautiful AND functional storage piece. Sharp eye seeing the possibilities of the box in a second hand store. I’m not always so successful at seeing “other jobs” that things could have. Good on you! Thanks for taking time to stop by! 🙂

  22. Karen Tenney

I don’t know if this is my favorite but my ‘newest’ storage is using the Sesmark Rice Crackers package to hold my Washi Tape. I can get at least sixteen rolls in one package and they fit perfect. Love all your organizing in the hotel room!

    • Oh – excellent idea, Karen! I bet it’s the perfect size. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and for leaving us a great tip! 🙂

  23. Cindy Otto

I like to store my matching dies with the stamp set, so I put a piece of magnetic sheet inside the plastic cases and they are right there when I need them. Love you blog and card ideas!

    • I do that as well – well, store the dies in with the stamps. I’m going to try the magnetic sheet idea – that would keep them much more corralled than when they’re just in there loose like I have them now. Thanks for the tip! 🙂

  24. Patricia Allison

Hi Mary, Beautiful card with Indescribable Gift… Glad the markers worked out well for you, and I love the spiritual significance of the sentiment. Sorry to hear about the soup mishap… Flying spoon, and all! Thanks for being a good sport and making another card for us to see! My fav craft organization tool is very simple… I store my ribbons on coat hangers that were originally designed for slacks. It makes them very simple to find when I am looking for a particular color. Thanks for a chance to win blog candy, and best wishes to all participants!

    • Excellent idea for storing your ribbon – sounds pretty much perfect! Glad that you liked the card – and good luck in the candy draw! 🙂

  25. Tricia D

I’ve also learned (the hard way) to not have food or drink nearby when I’m crafting! I love the SU! Ink storage but am ready for a major makeover.

    • Some lessons are definitely more painful than others, for sure! 🙂 A major makeover sounds like fun! Thanks for stopping by, Tricia.

  26. Marlene

A beautiful, beautiful card, Mary. I would love to have the ink pad-reinker-marker holder from Stamp & Storage, as well as the punch holder–maybe someday! Thanks for a chance to win such great blog candy.

  27. Thank you so much, Marlene! Very nice words, indeed. That holder (both of them actually, but particularly the ink cabinet) is definitely something I am wanting very much myself! Hope we BOTH get one soon! 😉

  28. Micheline Lueken

Okay, I covet the Stamp&Storage units. So maybe someday – but I also need room to put the units. Loved your card – including your ramen story. It is heartbreaking to have it happen when you are finished with your card.

    • Indeed, it was painful! But….at least it didn’t get the INSIDE too! 😉 I definitely agree with you on the Stamp and Storage units – they’re definitely going in my someday-it-will-happen craft room! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  29. Karen Clary

I covet a whole dedicated stamp room with built-in cabinets & large craft table; maybe some day 🙂

  30. Oh, me too!! Pinterest shows so many awesome rooms…. as you say: some day! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment! 🙂

  31. Lynnette VanDerWerff

My favorite storage is the Martha Stewart craft cabinets I purchased last summer when making up my new stamping room after moving into a new home! Big purchase…but I love them!

    • Fun fun! New home – new craft room – AND new cabinets just MADE for crafting. Awesome! Thanks for taking time to stop by and leave a comment!

  32. Debbie G

I love storing my Stamp Write Markers in Clear Mount Stamp cases. All 10 markers in the collections fit perfectly.

    • Debbie – what a great idea! The cases hold your markers and are easy to stack or line up on a shelf. Brilliant! Thanks for the idea and for taking time to stop by today!

  33. Karren

I follow your blog hop every time you ladies do it. You make so many beautiful items. My storage nightmare would have to be finding something to store my 12 X 12 DSP so it is convenient. Thank you for the blog candy opportunity. Happy stamping.

    • Karen – we really appreciate that you follow us! And thank you so much for the compliment! And you’re right – the 12×12 IS more cumbersome. Perhaps the magazine holders that Amy Koenders suggested would help you? Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope to “see” you here in the future! Good luck with the candy drawing.

  34. Gloria Pond

Love your card, the coloring is beautiful. I have a magnetic board on the wall in my craft room for my basic framelits, circles, ovals, etc. now I need something for my ribbons and punches.

    • Thanks so much, Gloria! I love the idea of a magnetic board to hold the framelits – that makes a lot of sense. Protects them and keeps them where you can see them easily! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the great tip!

  35. Kristi Gray

Such a beautiful card. I have that stamp set and have not used it yet. You have inspired me. And what dedication that you have all your things with you in the hotel.

  36. Thanks, Kristi! I just love that flower image -I think it’s so beautiful! And thank you for thinking I’m dedicated! I appreciate that very much! 🙂

  37. Dana

Beautiful card Mary! I think your temporary crafting space is awesome! It’s amazing what we crafters can come up with to be able to continue to play with our paper. I have plastic gutter material screwed to my wall to hold ribbon spools. It works great, no dowels to feed the spools on and I can easily see and access all of my ribbon. Great inexpensive solution!

    • What a great idea for your ribbon, Dana! Easy peasy AND inexpensive. Perfect. Thanks for stopping by and leaving us all a great tip!

  38. Pam Selinski

Love your card because I love that technique and of course that stamp set is awesome. As for my for my favorite storage solution, I am going to say my Stampin Up ink pad caddy. I am going to need another one soon since I keep all my ink pads.

  39. Marilyn R

Stamp-n-Storage is an awesome place-I have the marker/pad/re-inker unit and now I would like to get the cardstock shelves-you can never have too much cardstock, right? Thanks for the chance to win some blog candy! Great card-will have to try that technique.

    • True that, Marilyn. Never too much card stock – I mean, one really DOES need to have some in EVERY color, I think….right?!? 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

  40. Deepa M.

Wow – I love your storage ideas, good to know for the next time I need to travel 🙂 Your card is beautiful, I love the idea of popping out a small portion in the middle. I have that stamp set and it hasn’t seen ink yet … perhaps this weekend I will pull it out!

  41. Thanks, Deepa! Yes, I loved how the “pop” turned out! I’ve always like doing the double and triple matting, but this was my first try without the additional mats – won’t be the last time! DO try your Indescribable Gift stamp – you’re going to have a lot of fun with it! 🙂

  42. cynthia

A friend of mine just bought the Indescribable Gift set that you used and is worried that using markers to color her cards might not work as well as she is hoping. Not to worry! I cannot wait to show this post to her. I think that she will be happy as well as relieved. Thank you for the cards and the photos, etc. Your helpful hints are great!

  43. Glad to be able to help! If your friend needs any help, please have her get in touch. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  44. Claudia S.

Really like your card, very springtime.
Great organization in a limited space for traveling

  45. Kathy (cards_by_kp)

Your card is very pretty! Great job transporting and setting up a temporary crafting area in your hotel room.

The ArtBin Magnetic Die Storage Case holds my Framelits and Thinlits dies. Embossing folders, punches and stamp sets are labeled and stored in clear plastic Snapware containers. BigZ dies are kept in a Sizzix Die Storage Box. Recently, I purchased a small Sizzix Storage Box to hold Washi Tape. The Stamp-n-Storage products are on my wish list.

Thanks for the opportunity to win some great blog candy!

    • Thanks, Kathy! It’s fun to have my stuff here for when I get a hankering to play! Sounds like you’ve got a great storage system set up – making it easy to use all your tools. Stamp-n-Storage….must be on ALL our wish lists, huh?!? Thanks for stopping by and good luck in the candy draw! 🙂

  46. Donna V.

Great card. The storage information is very helpful. Thank you!

    • Thank you, Donna. Glad I was able to give y’all some information that maybe you can use. Appreciate you stopping by! 🙂

Oh, gosh! What a story to go with your cute card. And the fact that you sent all your stamping stuff is amazing. Well, what we won’t do to be able to stamp! Right now my favorite storage system is having my ink pads in old soda wooden boxes turned on their sides so that I have them on my desk and easily reached.

    • Thanks, Kathy! You’re right – we’ll go to great lengths to have our stuff handy wherever we are, apparently! 🙂 I like the idea of your old soda boxes – handy storage, but with a cool vintage look (I’m guessing!). Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! 🙂

  48. Mary, I absolutely ENJOYED reading your blog! I laughed so hard reading your gymnastic fork story!! Luckily, I had placed my coffee down when I got to that part. I just busted in laughter!! Ok, LOVE your card, so very pretty, or should I say I love your second card (lol!). Love your storage space. You definitely made some Great Lemonade out of your temporary situation. Btw I just wanted to add on to the tip of putting a magnetic sheet in the stamp case. I also do that for the coordinating sets. But in addition, I take a see-through colorful sticky note flag and take the stamp sheet out and place the flag right over the name on the spine of the case. I use pink flags and you can still clearly see the name and doing this allows me to know that these stamp sets have the framelits. Sometimes it is so hard to keep track of what we have and this allows me to see in one glance that this stamp set has the matching framelit inside. The other framelits I have on a magnetic board on the wall which are easily visible.

    • Hey Sandra – glad that you’d put your coffee down! And HOPE that you weren’t doing like I would have done and been drinking it anywhere near your cards or card-making stuff! 😉 Excellent tip on the putting the pink flags on the cases that have the framelits! You are SO right – as the stash gets bigger, keeping track of WHAT we have gets harder. Perfect idea! Thanks for taking the time to share with us. 🙂

My favorite storage solution is Art Bin containers. I have absolutely everything in them and they stack so nicely. Every one is labeled so I know exactly what is in each one. Thanks for the chance to win blog candy!

    • Sounds like you’ve got a great system that’s working really well for you! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave us a tip! 🙂

Lovely card and WONDERFUL story! Oh my!! What an adventure that was! I love love love your need to stamp while you are away! A girl after my heart!!! I too have been known to take more stamping supplies in my suitcase than anything else….fills the void when you are in a hotel! Nice they were accomodating!

My favorite storage right now is my empty Hills Bros cappuccino containers. I store my copics in them on its side and stack them……guess I dring a lot of coffee! Maybe I need some biscotti to go with it!

    • Definitely add some biscotti to your routine – not only do they make wonderful stamp supply storage – they REALLY taste good dunked in that coffee! 🙂 Thanks for the very kind words, Jill!
