Stampin’ Up! Submarine Life Sneak Peek Side Step Birthday for the SU Demos Fun Fold Blog Hop

Good morning everyone, on the day after Christmas! Welcome to the Fun Folds Blog Hop for Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators!  We’ve got a talented line-up and…I think you’re going to like what you see!  This is a once-a-month hop and…all our cards will be fun folds!!  How cool is that?!?

I’ve been wanting to play with a new bundle (coming on 4 January!) that isn’t my “usual” kind of thing – I don’t often go for cutesy things and cutesy cards.  But THIS bundle I simply had to have.  It’s the Submarine Life punch bundle!  I used it – and some new Lighter Than Air 6″ x 6″ DSP to make a faux Side-Step Card!  Take a look-see:

The layout for this one dove-tailed pretty nicely with the MFT Wednesday Sketch Challenge this week!

I started with a 5 1/2″ x 8″ piece of Fresh Freesia cardstock that, using my Simply Scored Scoring Tool, I scored along the long side at 3″, 6″ and 7″.  I folded the scored lines as a mountain (3″), valley (6″) and mountain (7″).  This is the main card base.

I cut a piece of Fresh Freesia paper from the new – and SUPER cute! –  Lighter Than Air 6″ x 6″ DSP (that happens to look a little wavy – I could have gone with that Petal Pink pattern, too!)…

…and matted it on Orchid Oasis cardstock.  Then I adhered that to the front of the main card base with Liquid Glue.

I did the same with a second narrow piece of the DSP – which I then adhered to the narrow panel on the front of the card base.

Then I scored a 3″ x 6″ piece of Fresh Freesia cardstock at 4 1/4″ – and folded it as a mountain.  That’s the side-step panel.

At the bottom of the larger end of the side-step, I stamped the “sea floor” image from the Submarine Life set a few times in Fresh Freesia ink.

Next up, near the top of a 2 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Vellum cardstock, I stamped the waves image from the Submarine Life stamp set…

…in Versamark Ink.  I also stamped some “sea grass” twice in Versamark at the bottom (this is ALSO propeller “wake” – as you’ll see when I turn it sideways!). I sprinkled them all with White Embossing Powder and heat set them with my Heat Tool.

I stamped some fish from Submarine Life in Flirty Flamingo – there are two kinds and I used them both!

On a piece of Basic White cardstock, I stamped the submarine in Fresh Freesia Ink.  I stamped the image again on a sticky note – and then used Paper Snips to cut it out.  Note: I made sure to preserve the OUTSIDE part of the sticky note – you’ll see why in a second.

I placed the outside of the sticky note “mask” around the stamped submarine…

…and then used a Sponge Dauber to add Orchid Oasis ink to the image.  SOME people may live in a YELLOW submarine (a Yellow Submarine..a Yellow Submarine….) – but WE’RE gonna live in a Freesia-Orchid Submarine! 😉

As a side benefit – I now ALSO have a mask for the sub itself, which I tucked right into the stamp case for another project down the road!

I stamped the propeller in Orchid Oasis and the snorkel in Flirty Flamingo on Basic White – then used the Submarine Life Builder Punch to cut out all three images.  I adhered the prop and the snorkel to the back of the submarine with little dots of Liquid Glue.

At this point, I realized I wanted some prop-wash, so – I stamped the sea grass horizontally in Versamark and heat embossed it in white!

I adhered the vellum to the larger panel of the side-step card with Stampin’ Seal and Glue Dots – keeping them behind stamped images or where the submarine was going to land.  Then I adhered the sub with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I used Liquid Glue on the bottom 1″ of the side-step panel and adhered it to the narrow bottom strip – aligning the bottoms.  Then I closed the card base and used more Liquid Glue to adhere the smaller portion of the panel to the back of the main card base – thus creating the side-step panel.

On a piece of Fresh Freesia – I stamped the two Submarine Life sentiments in Orchid Oasis and cut out all the words with Paper Snips.

I adhered all the words above the sub with Liquid Glue – and those below with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Then I added some Pool Party Adhesive-backed Iridescent Discs and the card front was done!

For the back – I stamped another sentiment from Submarine Life in Orchid Oasis on a Basic White panel. In the corner, I stamped the second sea grass image in Pool Party and Fresh Freesia.  Then I stamped the cute crab-in-snorkeling-gear in Flirty Flamingo.  Yep.  THIS is the image I love the most in this set!

I added some more of the Adhesive-backed Iridescent Discs, matted the panel on Orchid Oasis and then adhered it to the back of the main card base – all with Liquid Glue – and the card was done!

My Basic White Medium Envelope got the sea grass and snorkeling crustacean on the front…

…and more of the Lighter Than Air 6″ x 6″ DSP on the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  I love this version of a side-step card – it’s way easier than the more traditional way of making them, I think!  And I love it as a “vehicle” for the adorable Submarine Life images, don’t you!?  It’s just such a fun and happy set!  Were you surprised that I found “watery” paper in a pack called Lighter Than AIR?!  I sorta was, too – but it just shows ta go ya – never ASSUME where you might or might not! – find the paper you need!

I hope you like!
