Good Sunday morning to you all! We’re getting a little taste of Fall here in the A-T-L. We slept with the windows open last night – first time this season and it was wondrous! Hopefully we’ll get an actual “Fall” this year – fingers crossed!
I have a share today that combines quite a few of the wonderful new products in the 2015 Holiday Catalog. I wanted to try the new Square Pillow Box Thinlits – but I wanted to do a large one like we’d done at our Amy’s Inkin’ Krew meeting a few weeks back. And, in the catalog, they’ve got a sample Pillow Box in which they’ve incorporated one of my favorite new things – the Woodland TIEF. So, it was kind of a shoe-in, really! Add in some embellishments with Vintage Leaves and Leaflets Framelits, and a sprinkling of Joyful Season….and, well…take a look-see:
I’ve posted a Tutorial for you so that you can make your own Double Pillow Box, so I won’t go into all those details here. Let’s just say we’re starting…here:
Head over to the Tutorial page to see how I got to this point, okay? You’ll end up with a blank canvas on which to add your beautiful embellishments. Let’s start decorating!
The first thing I did was to stamp some leaves from the Among the Branches Stamp Set – in Crushed Curry and Cajun Craze. On further reflection, it would have been a LOT easier to stamp those BEFORE I assembled the Pillow Box. Which really seems like a “duh” observation, doesn’t it? 🙂
But, I got the leaves on there, on the front and the back. In order to cover the seam between the two pillow boxes – you’ll know what I mean after you see the Tutorial – I made a belly band out of a piece of Into the Woods DSP, some 1 1/4″ Burlap Ribbon and a length of Real Red 1/4″ Cotton Ribbon. I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere the three layers of the belly band together. For the DSP layer – which was first, I measured the width of the box with it kind of flattened, doubled that number and then added about 1/2″. Then I scored the band – which is 2″ wide – at about 5/8″ and again where the band was going to “turn the corner” to the back of the box. When I glued it, I made sure the little 5/8″ flap was on the under-side of the seam. Then I layered on the burlap ribbon and finished up with the Real Red Cotton Ribbon.
To make the cardinal, I used the Joyful Season multi-step stamp set. First I stamped the outline in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink, then I filled him in with the appropriate stamp in Real Red. I added his mask in Tuxedo Black, and his beak in Hello Honey. Then I fussy cut him out. Oh! I built him on Whisper White Thick Card Stock (same as the Pillow Box), so he held up well to being cut out. I didn’t cut out his little feet, cause…I’m not crazy! 🙂 Then I set him aside to await his turn.
I heat embossed four leaves from Vintage Leaves, in Gold Stampin’ Emboss’ Powder. I did three of the maples – one on Cajun Craze card stock, one on Tangelo Twist and one on Crushed Curry. The oak leaf was done on Tangelo Twist. These are quite detailed stamps , so be sure to use your Embossing Buddy before you stamp with the Versamark and sprinkle the Gold Emboss Powder on. Once I set them with the Heat Tool, I cut them all out with their matching framelit from the Leaflets Die set (which, of course, you can get in a bundle for 15% off!). I gave them all a little roll with my bone folder, just to add a little dimension to the front of the box.
I laid out the leaves how I was going to want to be on the box, and adhered their stems together with Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue. Then, just for good measure, I popped in a staple with my Mini-Handheld Stapler. I used the stapler again to adhere the cluster of leaves to the burlap ribbon on the belly band. At that point, I also added another dab of the Liquid Glue under the Burlap Ribbon – just to give it a little more stability.
I stuck on about three Glue Dots in the center, and wound multiple loops of Linen Thread around. Then I used more Liquid Glue to attach my fussy cut cardinal and “Thanks” from the Expressions Natural Elements.
And that, as they say, was that. In other words…et voila! A lovely little gift or treat holder for someone special!
Take another quick peek at the Weekly Deals before they’re gone – I’m thinking I need the Scalloped Tag Topper Punch and some Silver Glimmer Paper, and several packages of Pearl Basic Jewels….
TTFN and see you tomorrow!

Ahhh!! I love this!!!! Awesome job creating the double pillow box, wonderful decorating too. Love the fall colors, fantastic project! 🙂
Thank you, kindly, Miss Amy!! 😊
This is a winner, for sure. What a nifty idea for presenting a small thank you gift.
Yep, this is a great size to be able to decorate it kind of lavishly! Thanks, Mom!
Very pretty, Mary! That new embossing folder is lovely, and the pillowbox looks like it would be easy to use. The cardinal stamp, in a watercolor effect, is great. This would be a darling treat to have at each place setting, for Thanksgiving dinner, or for a women’s fall event. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us. 🙂
It is easy. When you double it and emboss it you do have to take your time to keep it all straight, but that’s about it. And you’re right – they’d make lovely little place settings! 😊
Lovely project! Thanks for the great instructions, I needed a refresher for the longer box! 🙂 Love all of the embellishments, too. So, so nice.
Thanks, Jari! I loved how the leaves turned out – used your idea of gold embossing them – Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
