Stampin’ Up! Barnyard Babies Congrats and Blog Candy #3 Winner!

We have a WINNER!!  My 100th Blog-post-iversary Blog Candy #3 will be on its way to its new home soon!  Read on down to see who the lucky winner is! Thanks to all who played and helped me celebrate 100 posts! 🙂

Now, I know that yesterday I told you to expect a card made with my new 2015 Holiday Catalog goodies.  But – we have a special event coming up and I needed a card.  And my brain had been running around an idea for a couple of days and I needed to get it made before I lost it!  Anyone able to relate to that??  Here’s what’s happening.

Chris – one of the twins I’ve told you guys about quite a bit in this blog – has (as you know!) been accepted to the University of GA School of Veterinary Medicine.  He starts class in about a week.  Sunday, they’re holding what they call The White Coat Ceremony.  We’re all going up to see what I assume is going to involve music and some cheering and some pep talks and maybe a few warnings about the difficulties and trials that lie ahead of them.  After the ceremony, we’ll tour the brand new, state of the art facilities at the school.  I’m really looking forward to going.  This is a really big deal for Chris – he’s worked so hard to get to this point, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.  As part of the deal, we’ll give him a gift of some sort (probably cash! 🙂 ) and, of course, a card!

He’s going to be a vet.  Barnyard Babies has animals.  Hello?  It’s pretty much a no-brainer.  Take a look-see:

My design was inspired by the Mojo Monday Sketch #410.  Be sure to head over to see what their designers came up with.

MM 410 Sketch

I started with a piece of Soft Suede Card Stock, which I stamped with Soft Suede ink with the Hardwood Stamp.  As I usually do with these large background stamps, I laid the stamp on my work surface, inked it up and then laid the paper on the stamp and rubbed all over the paper to transfer the image.  Just a lot easier than trying to hold it and stamp in the “normal” manner!  While I had the Hardwood stamp out, I inked it with Crumb Cake ink and stamped a piece of Crumb Cake card stock, that I’d use a little later.

I snipped a banner end on a length of 1 1/4″ Burlap Ribbon and adhered it to the Soft Suede card front with Multi-purpose Liquid Glue.

The animal art piece was actually easier than it looks.  The hardest part was the sequential adhering of the animals and the frame.  I did lots of dry-fitting and double checking, I can assure you.  For the animals, I stamped them on a piece of Whisper White card stock, in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink.  Then I colored them with my Stampin’ Write Markers, fussy cut them out and set them aside.

Remember the Hardwood stamped piece of Crumb Cake?  Well, I used it to make the frame for the art piece.  I used two squares in my Squares Collection Framelits – and ran them thru the Big Shot at the same time to create the frame.  The cut out became the center piece for the other square on the card.  Oh so thrifty! 😉

For the “art” work behind the animals, I used the Sheltering Tree stamp set on a piece of Very Vanilla card stock.  I stamped the tree trunk and branches in Soft Suede and the leaves in Wild Wasabi and Pear Pizazz.  I also used the grass/sky stamp in the set – but you can barely see them.  I stamped the sky in Soft Sky and the grass in Wild Wasabi.

I started the layering by adhering just the TOP of the frame to the art piece.  I left the bottom part loose so I could stick all my animal legs under the frame.  Before I put the animals on, I did the second square and adhered it.  It’s just the cut out from my frame making, SNAILd onto a Crumb Cake mat.  I made little SU! Marker “stitches” around the matt with the Crumb Cake marker.  Then I adhered it all to the card front – using both Stampin’ Dimensionals and some SNAIL, to account for the thickness of the burlap ribbon.

At that point, it was time to add the Barnyard Babies menagerie, which I did, one-by-one, with Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue, putting their little heads outside the frame and onto the second square.  When it was time for the little goat, I was out of room.  And then I realized I’d seen pictures of goats standing on horses.  No, I really have!  Since that solved my problem and seemed cute and funny, it was meant to be!  My last little guy was the pig.  I stuck him under the second square, cause it just seemed like the right thing to do!  The last thing to do was to very carefully put some Liquid Glue under the bottom part of the frame, so fully adhere it to the card front.

Now.  Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.  Or on the card, as it were.  If you’re at all familiar with the catalog, you’re fully aware that there is NOT a white lab coat stamp and there’s surely no framelit for it.  You are correct.  That is a completely hand-drawn and fussy cut “lab coat”!  I promise if SU! HAD done a lab coat, it would be a LOT better looking and much cuter! 🙂  But, I made it as real as I could get it, even writing “DVM” on the “breast” with my Basic Gray marker.  I stuck it on with Liquid Glue and then adhered one of the Expressions Natural Elements on top to finish it off.

I popped the whole thing on to my Very Vanilla card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals, and the card front was done.

For the inside, I went to my Watercolor Wishes set for the sentiment, which I stamped in Soft Suede.  Then I covered the sentiment with some sticky notes and stamped the Barnyard Baby horse over the top of it in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink.  This is some subliminal stuff I’ve got going on here – I’m hoping that he’ll decide to be a large animal vet (specifically a HORSE vet so I have a good vet around! 🙂 ).  I colored the pony with Chocolate Chip and Hello Honey and a little Soft Suede for his schnoozle..

I finished everything up by stamping some more Sheltering Tree images onto a Very Vanilla envelope.  I also added the pig and a sentiment from Baryard Babies.  Not sure I’d get so bold with the envelope if I was mailing it, but for a gift to hand-deliver, it will be fine!  The tree is in Soft Suede, Pear Pizzaz and Wild Wasabi, the grass and sentiment is Mossy Meadow.  Little Miss Piggy is in Pink Pirouette with a Blushing Bride snout.  I also added the swing – in Crumb Cake.

Et Voila!  The card was done and I hope it’ll be a hit with Chris.  I know the Barnyard Babies animals are a little kid-ish, but….he’s a good kid (man!) and will at least ACT like he’s so happy with the card! 🙂

  1. That’s an awesome card Mary!!! I love the little goat standing on the horse and the other little critters peeking around to corners. I’m sure that he’ll love it! 🙂

  2. JRGH

What an awesome card. I love that you drew the lab coat, I have NO drawing ability at all, if it’s not a stamp, It won’t be on a card I make, unless you can do it with a ruler or make it a squiggle of some sort. My nieces got the ability to draw in my family.

    • Ha – I don’d do a lot of drawing, either. This was out of pure necessity! Anything harder to do and I’d have had to change my design! 😉 Thanks so much!

  3. Patty Stanley

WoooHooo! Thank you Mary!! Love your latest creation with all the little animals…
