I captured a picture of a beautiful butterfly the other day amongst my tomatoes and marigolds!

Or…it’s the big moth that masquerades as a flutterby and then drops tomato hornworm eggs all over the tomato leaves.

I dunno.

But he’s pretty. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

  1. Actually, he is a she, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, and she is your state butterfly! They are gorgeous, and pretty common. Their caterpillar is large and green, much like the tomato hornworm, but the host plant for the swallowtail is NOT your tomatoes. The Swallowtail caterpillar prefers Sweet Bay Magnolia, Black Cherry and Tulip Tree in your area. Here, they use cottonwood, ash and birch.
    Enough Biology!
I set my alarm so I won’t forget to tune in tonight! Looks like a fun card.

I am SO glad that you gave me the 411 on her! I was so hoping you would. And now I’m even happier that I was able to get her picture!! Thank you so much, Julie! 🙂

  2. Looking forward to your live tonight! No idea if it’s a moth or butterfly, but I agree…it’s pretty! 🙂

  3. Kate

He is. And so are your marigolds. 💖

Nope, he’s no moth….he’s a Swallowtail. They are a very beautiful butterfly. You are very lucky to have seen him. We have Monarchs (mostly orange and yellow) out here in the West. It’s very rare for us to
    see a Swallowtail.

I love getting to see them – and THIS one was special, for sure!! Thank you, Kathy! 🙂

  5. Judith Hartbarger

Lucky you! That’s a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly.

I know – I was lucky she (found out she’s a she, too!) held still long enough for me to get her pic!! Thanks, Judi! 🙂
