Stampin’ Up! Colorful Seasonal Layers Fun-Fold

Happy Monday, everyone!  Hope your weekend was most excellent!  Ours was – we ended up going to dinner with our friends for Mother’s Day yesterday.  Very enjoyable – but…we still have not seen Guardians!  I’m going to take a day of vacation this week and we are going to see it.  I am afraid the number of movies needing IMAX/3-D is high and if we wait too much longer… 🙂

So last night I did a video on today’s card – if you were able to join me – thanks so much.  If not, and you’d like to see it – here it is on YouTube!

For those of you who want to see the directions and card cuts – this is the post you’re looking for!

This card uses a fun basket-weave fold that I saw a tutorial video for, done by Kelly Atcheson, over on Splitcoast Stampers.  I combined that fold with the new Colorful Seasons stamp set and the bundled Seasonal Layers Thinlits.  Here’s what I came up with.  Take a look-see:

Now the layout for this card is courtesy of the Freshly Made Sketches challenge this week.

And my color scheme hails from the Fab Friday color challenge.

I started by printing out the basket weave template that Kelly provided.  Here it is for you!  Print it out – make sure it’s printed on a “regular” piece of printer paper.

Then I cut out one of the templates and secured it to my Dapper Denim card base.  That’s a piece of 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ card stock, scored and folded (and burnished a little) at 4 1/4″.  I used a couple of paper clips to secure my template to the card base.  Next, I just used my snips to cut the lines on the template, making sure to go all the way to the ends of each line.

To make the basket weave, take a look at the video to see how it’s done.  It’s crazy easy – but it’s a lot easier to see in a video than in words or photos!

Go ahead.

I’ll wait.

Okay – you back?  Got the hang of the basket weave?

Great – we’ll drive on!

My card front begins with a piece of Very Vanilla card stock, SNAILd to a Calypso Coral mat.  To make my leaves, I pulled out a piece of scrap Water Color Paper (I used Canson 90lb Cold-Press) and then sponged it in Calypso Coral, Rich Razzleberry and Dapper Denim.  I made large swipes of each color, and let them overlap a bit.  Then I cut the three leaves with the beautiful, intricate leaf die in the Seasonal Layers Thinlits.

I adhered the leaves to my card front with Liquid Glue.

The sentiment, from the Colorful Seasons stamp set (which will be bundled with the Seasonal Layers in the new catalog for a 10% savings!), I stamped in Rich Razzleberry on a strip of Very Vanilla, then matted it on Calypso Coral.  I popped the sentiment over the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card front was done!

On the inside, I used the leaf image in the Colorful Seasons set and inked the stamp with my Sponge Daubers in Calypso Coral, Dapper Denim and Rich Razzleberry and stamped the leaf on a Very Vanilla panel.

How cool does that basket weave look when you open the card?!?  I SNAILd my panel to a Calypso Coral mat and then into the card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals, and the card was done!

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got a repeat of the Colorful Seasons leaf on the front…

…and on the envelope flap,

Et Voila!  Don’t be afeared of the basket weave, y’all!  It’s really simple when you see it broken down (so please watch my video!!).  Like the first time you try to make a lattice top on a pie.  Looks too complicated for words, but then you see the “trick” and…yep.  Voila!  I love love love this leaf stamp and die in the Colorful Seasons bundle – it was the first thing that caught my eye when I saw it.  When added to all the other stamp images and dies…well, I know this is going to be one of my favorites!  I hope you like it, too – and are adding it to your wish list! 🙂

Finn-Fan Fix…

You know, this silly goofy little dog that we invited into our lives…he gives us so much joy.

And aggravation!

And laughter!

Really more joy and laughter than aggravation, to be sure!

This morning, before I was really “up”, he came into the bedroom for his usual “second sleep” (the one after he goes out first thing and before we go feed).

I happened to look down and saw….

That’s the end of his collar – he has a new one and it’s very very long.  He had ahold of it – and was sound asleep.

Silly goofy little dog.

And oh, I love him so!

  1. Such a beautiful card Mary! The leaves look amazing and I love the basket weave. Thanks for the video and the link to the template, now I need to go try it! 🙂

  2. Susan K

Your leaves are gorgeous and you’re so creative to use the lattice on the edge–it is super cute. Hate I missed the live sharing–I cannot remember to tune in! Aargh! So, thanks for sharing with us today! Great card and cute FFF.

    • I appreciate you trying to join me live – and watching afterwards when you can’t make it! Thanks so much!! 🙂

  3. This is so lovely – love your swirl of colors on the leaves, and the basket weave spine is always so dramatic! Very gorgeous! Thanks so much for playing at Fab Friday!

  4. Elisha

Oh Mary, this card is GREAT! I watched your video late last night – I think I can do it👍 Thanks for template and wonderful directions! That Finn is just SO CUTE!! Lol!

  5. Donna Black

Well – I hadn’t set the timer so I over slept your live video but did turn in and was surprised to see
one of those items that fits the old saying ‘what goes around – comes around’. I worked in a stamp
store very part time ’95 – ’99 and one lady working there was from England. She had returned home
to England and brought us all presents and they were all metal dies of the different shapes of
lattice work that you did on last nights card. I will say having the pattern on paper and cutting it
with scissors looks much easier than using the die and a blade for cutting. Very pretty card.
Holding a class today using old techniques. Should be fun. Thanks for the video – Donna

    • What’s old is new again! But – as you say – this might be a touch easier than a die! Either way – it makes a fun card! Thanks for tuning in!! 🙂

  6. My grandma (who just turned 90!) introduced me to this basketweave card 12 years ago when I started getting into stamping and she had a little collection of cardmaking items. She mailed me a photo copy of the pattern which I still have today! It’s so cool to see it coming around again and on your beautiful card! I never would have thought to do these colors with leaves but they look awesome and have a bit of an autumn feel! Thanks for sharing at Fab Friday!

    • That’s pretty cool, Amanda! I love that your grandma was an influence on your stamping!! The leaves did turn out pretty in these colors, I think. Thanks so much! 🙂

  7. Beautiful card! I remember doing that fold many, many years ago and back then you could even buy templates to make it quicker! Those leaves are just gorgeous! Thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.

  8. Lynda Goff

We did one of these in a workshop today. I really like it! Thanks for sharing it.

Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE smartphone

  9. Wow, your card is stunning, Mary! I love it!

  10. Mindy Backes

Such a neat technique. And I’d never thought of using leaves with this combo but it totally works! Thanks for playing at Fab Friday!

  11. marie

use wax paper with your die and all the pieces will come off. Lovely card will use the idea for Canada’s 150th but just use red and white!. have a great day.

    • Thanks much, Marie – I used to use waxed paper all the time and then got out of the habit! I got the brush and will see if that helps!! 🙂

  12. Carol Loy
