Stampin’ Up! Gingham and Succulents Birthday Card

Hey, y’all!  How goes your week?  Well, I hope!  We’re experiencing the “summer” version of Spring here.  It was 80 yesterday!  Pretty nice, but…back to working up a little sweat when doing stuff outside. And, of course, the pollen count was back in the 2400 range, so there’s that! 🙁

Today’s card uses one of my favorite Occasions Catalog goodies – the Succulent Garden Suite.  I made a couple of succulent plants with the Succulent Framelits and added it over some gingham Succulent Garden DSP (now available as a free Sale-A-Bration item!).  Take a look-see:

The layout for this card comes from the Freshly Made Sketches challenge this week.

And the color palette and inspiration for the succulents came from the Sunday Stamps challenge.

I started by SNAILing a piece of Succulent Garden DSP to an Elegant Eggplant mat.  Over that, I used some Liquid Glue to adhere a length of 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon.  And then I used a couple of Glue Dots to wind and secure several large loops of Copper Metallic Thread.

For the large plant, I cut two of each size of the “flowers” in the Succulent Framelits.  I used Wild Wasabi for the larger petals and Pear Pizzazz for the smaller ones.  Using my Sponge Dauber, I sponged the edges of the Wild Wasabi petals in Elegant Eggplant and the edges of the Pear Pizzazz with Watermelon Wonder.  Then I very lightly curled the tips of the petals with my Bone Folder and used Liquid Glue to stack them up.

The smaller plant is cut from Mint Macaron and sponged with Rich Razzleberry ink.

I adhered the large plant over the loops of Copper Metallic Thread with Liquid Glue, then popped the smaller one on with a Stampin’ Dimensional.

The sentiment, from the Oh So Succulent stamp set, is inked in Versamark – I only inked the words Happy Birthday (the rest of the sentiment is on the inside!) – and heat embossed it with Copper Stampin’ Emboss Powder.  I cut it out with the little banner die in the Bunch of Banners Fraemlits, snipped off the right end and adhered it to the card front with Liquid Glue.

Finally, I added a couple of the little banners from the Oh So Succulent set.  I stamped the image twice in Versamark on Whisper White, sprinkled them with Copper Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heated them.  I fussy cut them both, snipped them in half, and used Liquid Glue to adhere them into the large plant.

On the inside, I stamped “a very special person” from the sentiment in the Oh So Succulent stamp set in Rich Razzleberry on a Whisper White panel.  Then I inked just the word “to”, covered the rest of the stamp with a couple of sticky notes and added that to the front of the sentiment.  I added a Mint Macaron succulent from the set – stamping the outline image in full strength and the fill in in stamped-off-once Mint Macaron.  I covered the flower with a sticky note mask and added smaller Wild Wasabi plants (again stamping off the fill-in image).

I SNAILd the panel to an Elegant Eggplant mat and into my Tip Top Taupe card base, SNAILd the card front on, and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got a repeat of the Oh So Succulent plants in Mint Macaron and Wild Wasabi on the front…

…and more of the Succulent Garden DSP on the envelope flap!

Et Voila!  Big, bold, beautiful succulent plants are so fun and easy to make with this bundle!  And – oh by the way – don’t forget that you can get this pretty Succulent Garden DSP free for Sale-A-Bration with a $50 order.  Hope you like!

FINN-FAN FIX….

I seem to be stuck on ponding stories for my little man this week.  Can’t help it very much – he’s so danged cute when he’s playing in the pond.

He’s all “boy”, there’s no doubt about it.

He’s found himself a little puddle right by the pond – with about 3″ of water and probably 12″ of sucking, brown, slimy and oh-so-stinky mud.  And he thinks that’s just the bomb-diggity to play in.  Especially when one of those water skimmer bugs is in it – that just torches his prey-drive into high gear!  The pouncing and diving and crouching to leap….means he gets mud from tip to toe.

Today he escalated the muddy water quotient in pond-bee (that’s what we call playing frisbee anywhere near the pond these days).  Today he discovered that…the frisbee sinks…

…after several attempts to grab it by sticking his face in the water, he realized that if he just stepped on it…

Boom!  There it was!

One might think the next step is to bring the pond-bee back to mom to throw again!

Maybe.

And…maybe not!  Several times he just dropped it back in the water.

Guess he wanted to see if his theory of pond-bee pop-up-ability was correct, or if it was just a fluke.

  2. Elisha

What a wonderful card!! I LOVE the color gradation of the large succulent! It looks oh so real!! Now that is one SMART pooch! Practicing his new found skill! Lol!!

    • He’s a sharp cookie (why do people say that?? Cookies usually have no sharp edges, so…??) that’s for sure! Thanks so much, Elisha!! 🙂

  3. Finn is just so dang cute AND intelligent! I was looking for a dog in the mud hole picture…thought it was one of those hidden object things 😉 Was the white stuff snow? OK, back to the main purpose of your blog…your card is lovely and I do believe I will copy it exactly as made. The colors are quite similar to the challenge at SIP. Well done!

    • Pretty sure that’s “pond scum” and yes, it smells just like you’d think it would from the name! Thanks for the kind words, Karen! And have fun CASEing the card! 🙂

  4. Donna Black

Just wanted to let ou know that I received the pkg and cute hostess stamp set plus a beautiful card.

Question – do you also use other media? I can see some of your cards as paintings. You are talented.

Storm coming our way today and moving toward you – have a good one while the sun shines.

    • Thanks much, Donna – so glad that you liked everything! I don’t use other media – I have zero drawing/painting talents! 🙁 If it wasn’t for stamps… But I sure appreciate the nice words! 🙂 Be safe, my friend! 🙂

  5. Kathleen VanDeVeere

Lovely card from your favorite set!
Sorry for the yuk weather. AND the pollen count.
On the other hand, having a Pacific Northwest day out to Bailey. Fog, drizzle, cool. Lovely all ’round. Stirs my memories.

  6. Love that succulent set, you have made some beauties, too! Finn is just too cute with that frisbee in the water!

  7. juliejphoto

That Finn! Who called animals ‘dumb’?
Love this card. Guess it is one you hand deliver rather than try to send through the PO?
Cloudy here and in the 40’s. Not ready for summer yet!

    • Darned sure not I! They’re smart as can be – and part of that is making us THINK they’re dumb! Thanks – and yes, I’d probably put this one in a gift or handcarry it. 🙂

Mary your card is beautiful! The flower looks just real succulents, great job blending those petals. BTW- Finn is so entertaining-what energy he must have.

  9. Kathy L

What a beautiful card! The way you inked the leaves of the succulent plants makes them look so much like live plants. And I think live succulents are among nature’s best creations. TFS!
