Stampin’ Up! Avant Garden Big On Birthdays Card

Happy Hawwmp Day!  Hope your week is going well!

Today’s card share uses a set from the Occasions catalog that I hadn’t used until now.  Called Big On Birthdays, it lives up to its name – big, bold and beautiful Birthday sentiments.  And I added flowers from the beautiful – and free! – Avant Garden stamp set.  Take a look-see:

The layout is based on the sketch in the TGIF Challenge this week.

And the pretty, summery colors are from the Stamp Ink Paper challenge.

I started with a Whisper White panel and used the Avant Garden stamp set to stamp a slew of flowers and leaves.  I stamped flowers in Daffodil Delight and Peekaboo Peach, putting sticky note masks over some flowers while stamping over them, to create flowers “in front” and flowers “in back”.  You can see I left the upper left corner of the panel plain.

Then I kept my sticky note mask handy and, using the stem image in the Avant Garden set, stamped stems in Bermuda Bay.  I stamped the image off once on scrap paper before stamping my card.  Finally, I used the little leaf image and, still stamping off once, stamped my leaves.  While you’re doing this, just move your sticky note masks around as you need them.

Finally, I added the little flower centers in Soft Suede (yes, a little cheat – but…it was necessary!).

I used some Liquid Glue to add a Lace Doily with the white side up in the upper lefthand corner, then I cut the excess off with my Paper Snips.  I SNAILd the panel to a Peekaboo Peach mat and then wrapped some Bermuda Bay Thick Baker’s Twine around the card front – securing it in the back with scotch tape.

The sentiment, from the Big On Birthdays stamp set, is stamped in Bermuda Bay on Whisper White.  I used my Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Write Marker to very lightly fill in the little spaces on the “very”.  Then I matted it on Peekaboo Peach and popped it over the Baker’s Twine with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I finished up by adding three Daffodil Delight Enamel Shapes and the card front was done.

On the inside, I added a few more flowers and leaves on a Whisper White panel.

I SNAILd it to a Peekaboo Peach mat and into my Bermuda Bay card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got some more flowers and leaves.  Do you see that the leaves are different than on the card?  Yes.  My leaf stamp grew legs.  I have no idea where it wandered off to  – but…it wasn’t where I’d left it two minutes before…

…and I added the same to the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  See what I mean? Big, bold and beautiful!  And, of course, Avant Garden is simply beautiful.  Hope you like!

FINN-FAN FIX….

So – the other day I got a new book in the mail.

agility-book
Yes, I know he’s young, but his baby-brain needs “busy”!  And it starts with very very basic stuff – obedience extensions, really.  So – it’s going to be good for him.  And – since it’s got like 500 pages, it’s going to take me a minute to get thru it and begin to implement it.

But – before I ever got my book in hand, I’d started teaching him some new things.

finn-walking-the-board

Yep – that’s him on a stand-stay…on two boards on the ground!  He’s learning to walk on things that are a little wobbly!  If we go the other way – perpendicular to the boards – I can swing my hand forward and he leaps (literally – sometimes 3 feet in the air!!) over the boards!!

He learns pretty fast – mostly cuz he wants as many mini Milk Bones as he can get me to give him!

Oh – and he’s ever so much more handsome than the pretty boy leaping over the jump on the cover of the book, don’t you think?!? 😉

  1. What a beautiful birthday card Mary! Love the colors and your design is perfect! 🙂

    • Thanks a lot, Amy! 🙂

    • Kathelyn

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Finn grow up! The first thing I look for when I open my email each day is a post from you AND Finn! And YES, Finn is definitely much more handsome than the cover dog!

      • Thanks, Kathelyn! I’m pleased that you’re enjoying my ramblings and watching the little guy become big! 🙂

  2. That was my first thought…Finn is MUCH cuter than the cover dog! My second thought was how much I love the Avant Garden set. I like what you did with the colors and the soft suede WAS needed. Very pretty card. We are on our way home from Disney and can’t wait to start creating cards again. Thursday is chemo day. I wish they had tables at the center like they did at Moffitt…I’d take my PP kit and maybe get some business prospects lined up for the future. Have a great day.

    • Yes, some tables would be nice. Maybe suggest it!! And you might even find that the “why you’d like a table” discussion would spark some interest! Thanks so much, Karen – and have a safe trip home! 🙂

  3. Elisha

Great card, Mary! That stamp set is quickly moving to the top of my wish list- thanks for that😀 And your leaf? You’d better start stretching out for that army crawl around your craft room – lol! Finn is far more handsome – those freckles!! Have fun with your new endeavor – Finn must be really smart to learn so quickly!

    • Oh – it’s a good one and you NEED it!! I need to put Finn on the hunt for the little stamp – I’ll tell him he can’t have it and then he’ll find it right away! Thanks so much, Elisha! 🙂

  4. Patricia

Mary, you turned that card into a major WOW! It is beautiful! I am going to try it in the colors you used too. Gorgeous Finn, he is so smart & does need to keep busy, good for you to take the time to do the training it does pay off & I can see where you started from day one!

  5. Barbara Riefner

Yes he is a beautiful boy and much prettier than the dog in the picture. Love reading about him.

  6. Mom

Why, yes he is! And that brain train agenda is wonderful.
Card nice use of my not-so-fave colors.

  7. juliejphoto

Another pretty card. I may have to start using color challenges to get myself using color combinations I don’t usually try. You did a great job with the colors. Isn’t it amazing how those stamps just wander off by themselves? And Finn is so adorable! (Almost makes me want another dog, but NO.)

    • Definitely sign up to get color and sketch challenges, Julie! They really help spur the creative process. And…thanks so much!! 🙂

  8. Yes, this is big, bold and definitely beautiful! I love, love this stamp set. Wish is would not be going away so soon. Great job, Mary!

  9. RitaR

What a luscious card you’ve created; that color combo is just beautiful! I think those Avant Garden stamps are such a pleasure to work with. Not only is Finn movie-star-handsome, he’s such a quick study, too. Can’t wait to see what else you are going to teach him!

    • Yes – it’s a wonderful stamp set! “Movie-star-handsome” and smart. A lethal combination, indeed! But…that’s him! Thanks so much, Rita! 🙂

  10. Terrific card! Love the pretty floral background, and how you used the lace doily. Thanks for playing along with TGIF this week!

  11. Wow! Great masking on today’s card! A fair bit of work I am sure, but it definitely paid off! Thanks so much for joining in the TGIF challenge this week! <3

  13. Wow Mary! This card is beautiful! I love the color combo and the way you added the flowers as a background! I think I’m going to CASE this! 🙂 Glad you joined us this week at TGIF!

  14. Mary, this Avant Garden stamp set is quickly becoming a new favorite flower stamp of mine and you have made a beautiful card with it. I love your color combo, it reminds me or spring and we’re thigh deep in snow! Thanks for joining us at Stamp, Ink, Paper this week! Crystal, DT
