Stampin’ Up! Sunburst Over the Rainbow and…Blog Candy!

Christmas Cactus

Yep – that’s my somewhat confused Christmas Cactus.  That picture was not taken at Christmas.  Nope – it was taken this morning!  It’s going a little bit crazy.  Apparently it’s on a Euclidian calendar.  Or a Martian calendar.  Or…something!  Cuz it didn’t do such a great job blooming at the Christmas that we all just observed! 🙂  But, I admit that I love it – I think it’s just one of the prettiest things around and I haven’t been able to kill it yet – it just gets all gorgeous in spite of me!

So – in honor of its blooming beauty and insistence that it simply must be Christmas somewhere….I’m giving away some blog candy!  Read on down and I’ll tell you what you need to do to get entered!

Today’s share is my first attempt at using the Sunburst Thinlit.  I’ve tried a few times and just not been successful.  I have no idea why – it just kind of bamboozles me!  But today – I think I got it!  I added a very apropos sentiment from the Over the Rainbow stamp set (Annual Catalog) and some pretty Wildflower Fields DSP.  Take a look-see:

Sunburst Something to Say 6 - Stamps-N-Lingers

The layout for the card was inspired by the Can You Case It sketch #110:

CYCI #110

And the theme from The Paper Players #285.

PP 285 Sketch

So I started by SNAILing the Wildflower Fields DSP that looks sort of like rain onto a panel of Daffodil Delight.  And, I just realized that I put it upside down!  LOL.  It’s raining….UP! 🙂  Oh well…  upside down rain happens!

To make my sun, I laid the Sunburst Thinlit on a piece of Daffodil Delight card stock that was about 2 1/2″ wide.  I set it off to the side – letting the die hang over the edge – that naturally created the straight edge depicted in the sketch.

Sunburst Something to Say 9 - Stamps-N-Lingers

Then to make it into a circle, I used my 5th-from-the-center Circle Framelit (2 3/4″ diameter) to cut it…

Sunburst Something to Say 10 - Stamps-N-Lingers

Once I had my Daffodil Delight circle sun – I repeated the process – with the next smaller circle framelit – using a piece of Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper.  I used my Brayer to color the Dazzling Diamonds circle with Daffodil Delight.

Sunburst Something to Say 4 - Stamps-N-Lingers

I made the two banners – one from Whisper White card stock and one from Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper – snipping the ends with my Paper Snips.  For the sentiment, I used a sentiment from Over the Rainbow.  Now, the sentiment image says “You Are My Sunshine”.  But I knew I was going to use a die cut for the “You”, so I inked the words “Are My” with my Tuxedo Black Memento Ink (I used some Post-it-note tape to cover the part I didn’t want to ink) and stamped it on my Whisper White banner strip.  Then I cleaned the stamp, inked up “Sunshine” with the ink pad and stamped it under the first image.

Sunburst Something to Say 5 - Stamps-N-Lingers

I edged both banners with the Lost Lagoon marker and adhered them to the card front with SNAIL.  Over them, I used Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere the card stock Sunburst right at the edge of the card front, then layered the Glimmer Paper Sunburst over that.  For the very center, I used the largest flower from the Blossom Bunch Punch and my 7/8″ Scallop Circle punch – both layered with Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue.  And I left the whole thing alone for several minutes to dry – remember it’s not easy to glue to Glimmer Paper, it takes a minute to take hold.

Sunburst Something to Say 3 - Stamps-N-Lingers

The die cut sentiment is from a Hello You framelits die – and I cut one from Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper and two from Basic Black card stock.  I colored the Dazzling Diamonds piece in Lost Lagoon with my Stampin’ Write Marker.  Using little dots of Multi-Purpose Liqud Glue, I layered them up – offsetting them all just the tiniest bit.  I wanted there to be a shadow.  Then I used a little more of the Liquid Glue to adhere it over the sun and the banners.

Sunburst Something to Say 6 - Stamps-N-Lingers

I added some Rhinestone Basic Jewels to the sentiment banner and the card front was done.

For the inside, I used the sun image from the matching (and bundled for 15% off!) Sunburst Sayings stamp set and stamped it on the edge of a Whisper White card stock panel in Daffodil Delight.  Then I added a strip of the Wildflower Fields DSP, matted on Daffodil Delight, running it vertically up the side of the liner.

Sunburst Something to Say 1 - Stamps-N-Lingers

Then I SNAILd it to a Daffodil Delight mat and then into my Whisper White card base.  I popped the front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

Sunburst Something to Say 5 - Stamps-N-Lingers

For the Whisper White Medium envelope, I repeated the Sunburst Sayings sun – stamping it off the left edge in Daffodil Delight…

Sunburst Something to Say 8 - Stamps-N-Lingers

…and then added the Wildflower Fields DSP liner, cutting it with my Envelope Liner framelits!

Sunburst Something to Say 2 - Stamps-n-Lingers

Et Voila!  A rain-or-shine themed card – just to bring a smile to someone who brightens your life!  I hope that you like it!

  1. Mom

By Jove, I think you’ve got it! A card so pretty, and singin’ Clarabellita’s song does it for me. Good job!
And with the ‘almost Easter’ cactus too. 🙂

  2. Patricia Allison

Hi Mary, Any houseplant that grows is good with me! Thanks for sharing your pretty card, and all of the techniques… I learn a lot by following your blog. My favorite Occasions product is the Birthday Bouquet DSP. Love the colors! It will be fun to see what is new in a few months. Thanks for your inspiration, and have a great day!

    • Ha – sounds like your requirements are about like mine! Nice that this kind is also pretty! Birthday Bouquet DSP – definitely one that I hope makes the cut – I love it! Thanks, Patricia! 🙂

  3. Awesome card Mary! Love the way that your sunburst turned out…I agree, looks to me like you’ve got it! 🙂 Your Christmas somewhere cactus makes me laugh, my mom had one of those for years and it never bloomed at Christmas!

Oh, for your blog candy…I am hoping that the Birthday Blooms stamp set and Birthday Bouquet DSP carry over. Love both of those items. 🙂

  4. JRGH

Great card! Love your sunburst. Beautiful Christmas cactus I love the part where you said you hadn’t killed it yet! That’s me I have a good black thumb if you want it die send to me I can help with that. For the blog candy, boy that is hard to decide but I think “Number of Years ” set is one of top carryover wishes.

    • I bet that one carries over – it just seems like it ought to, doesn’t it!? That cactus came from the grocery store about 5 years ago – I kept waiting for it to die…but… no. Thanks! 🙂

  5. Patty Stanley

What a clever way of using the sunburst thinlits die! There are so many items in the Occasions Catalog but if I had to pick one it would be the Bontanical bundle.

  6. bonnie greenhoe

hi mary congrats on your plant, mine has been in bloom since xmas but not as full right now. I had about 300 blooms then on my plant. Makes me think of spring since i still have snow in upper michigan, I would like to see the bontanica bundle i have one and it makes beauiful cards so if some one doesnt have it order it you wont be sorry. I loved your card today i look forward to all you make.

    • Botanical Bundle is definitely a front runner on this informal survey! I’m glad that you’re enjoying yours, Bonnie! Thanks for the nice words! 🙂

  7. Karen L.

Have you maybe thought that maybe your cactus is an Easter Cactus? I had one, a long time ago that someone told me it was an Easter not a Christmas Cactus……had something to do with the leaf shape. It bloomed beautifully in the spring, usually around Easter so I went along with that thought. I no longer have it…..”gifted” it to a neighbor when we moved. Just a thought!

Blog candy entry……I hope that they carry over “Balloon Celebration Bundle”…….I like the balloons & with the punch it makes it quick to have a bunch of balloons for a cute card. I really would like to see “Party Pants” & “Sky is the Limit” from SAB to carry over…….you can only spend so many $50’s when you need to put the brakes on!! Know what I mean??

Thanks for the chance at a great blog candy gift. Happy Spring!!

    Karen L.

    • Hey Karen – I’m starting to think you’re right – I didn’t even know there was such a thing. I’ll have to Google those leaves. I don’t know if SAB things carry over or not! That would be fun, wouldn’t it? Thanks, Karen! 🙂

  8. Hi! Love, love, love how big and beautiful your Christmas cactus is! I have a small one that my husband bought me a couple of years ago. Mine so far has bloomed a couple to a few weeks right before Christmas and a few blooms in April.

I would love to see the Have a Cuppa bundle carry over. So many things you
can do with that set. Mother’s Day cards, get better cards, tea parties, friendship, etc.
Thank you for all your hard work on the blog. It’s so inspiring. Happy day!

    • Thanks! Give your cactus a chance and get it in a big pot! And give it a little sun – mine didn’t like it when it was away from the door. Have a Cuppa is a fun one for sure! Fingers crossed that it makes the cut. Thanks for leaving a comment! 🙂

  9. VickiB

i sure hope that metallic glitter tape is carried over! BTW, my cactus does the same thing – Mom said it is an Easter cactus.

    • I love that stuff!! So easy to use! I think your Mom’s right on the cactus – I’ll have to re-think what I call it! 🙂

  10. Dayle

I’m relatively new to your blog and so glad I found it because you are so descriptive on how you make your cards and it is so helpful! The item I hope carries over to the new catalog is the botanical bundle so I can have a little more time to order it – hopefully.

    • Welcome, Dayle – I’m glad that you found me and that my posts are helpful to you! Botanical Bundle – yep, I think it’s the winner! Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if it shows up in the Annual Catalog – fingers crossed! Thanks for leaving a comment today! 🙂

  11. K. Boyer

My “Christmas” cactus is blooming now too. I really like “A Nice Cuppa” and “Sky’s the Limit”. Thanks for the chance to win.

    • Those are good ones, for sure. I like that you called it a “Christmas” cactus – I think yours might have been misnamed – like mine appears to have been! Thanks! 🙂

  12. Kay V

Another beautiful card. Love it. I have several that I hope will be carried over, Botanical’s bundle tops my list and Rose Wonder bundle is a close second.

  13. Thanks, Kay! And those are both great choices for carry-overs!! Fingers crossed! 🙂

  14. Tricia D

Love your card and your stories. I’m hoping the Number Of Years and Botanical Bundle are both carried over. There are so many great products that I love. Thanks for the chance to win!

  15. Hey Tricia – thanks for that! And those are two really good hopes for carry-over! Hopefully SU! reads my blog and sees what everyone wants…;) Good luck in the draw! 🙂

  16. Barb

Love your card and appreciate you giving all your cutting measurements! I’m hoping the Botanical Blooms and dies make the new catty. So much fun to play with…stamping and cutting and layering!!! Oh, and the sunburst die too! Haven’t bought it yet but you are definitely enabling me ;D

  17. Haha! Go for it, Barb! It’s kind of fun! I don’t see how Botanicals can NOT get into the AC – as popular as it’s been! We’ll see in a couple of months! 🙂

  18. Very sparkly and very pretty! A great take on our “rain or shine” theme challenge. Thanks for playing with The Paper Players this week.

  19. Wynne

What a fun and beautiful card~ thanks for joining us at CYCI ~ Wynne

  20. Sandy M

What a gorgeous sparkly creation, Mary! Wish I could see it IRL! This card is sure to bring someone a smile. Thanks so much for playing along with my challenge this week at The Paper Players!

  21. Thank you, Sandy! 🙂

  22. I do not know how you find the time to create all of the beautiful cards. Your cactus looks gorgeous and is obviously a hardy plant since “I haven’t been able to kill it yet – it just gets all gorgeous in spite of !” Sometimes being late is better:) I love the botanicals set, and if it does not make the annual catalog, I think Stampin’ Up might get a lot of emails. TFS!!

    • I suspect you’re right on the Botanicals – SU! probably should bar the doors and change their phone number if they decide to not push it into the Annual Catty! 😉 And yes, it’s a darned hardy plant – turns out it LIKES not being watered. Which is handy… Thanks so much for the kind words, Donna – they’re very much appreciated! 🙂

  23. Debra Anderson

Who would not like to receive this card? It would lift one’s spirits “rain or shine”.
I sincerely hope SU carries over the Botanicals. Also, Timeless Textures is a winner for me for sheer versatility.
Thank you so much for including cutting info on your posts. Very helpful, indeed!

  24. Oh, I love that Timeless Textures, too – just enough different from Gorgeous Grunge to be really useful. Good choice! Thanks so much, Debra! 🙂

  25. Kathy S.

Going places DSP. I love having paper for men

  26. Mary B.

I love the the clever way you used the sunburst die. I will have to remember that after I order it of course.
I’m hoping they would bring back everything in the occasions catalog! I really do. There is so many good things. However I especially love the botanicals DSP and the honeycomb embellishments are some of my favorites.

  27. I don’t see how they could not being back the Botanicals Suite – it’s been WAY too popular! Thanks for the nice words, Mary! 🙂
