Stampin’ Up! Clean-and-Simple Watercolor Wings

Mornin’, y’all!  How goes your week?  We’re getting some much-needed rain and it’s cooler again, so that’s a nice change for us!

My card today uses a pretty stamp set called Watercolor Wings.  It’s in both the current and the upcoming Annual Catalog so you can get it right now if you don’t have it already!  Take a look-see:

I played along with two challenges on this one.  The first, from Sunday Stamps, inspired my color choices.

And the second, from The Paper Players, inspired the clean-and-simple format and the butterflies!

I started by cutting two of the solid butterfly die shapes from the Bold Butterfly Framelits from scrap card stock.  I used the cut-outs as masks and the negative as a stencil.

Using my Sponge Daubers and my card stock stencil, I inked the top butterfly in Tranquil Tide.  I used the stamps in the Watercolor Wings stamp set to add the accents and the butterfly body in more Tranquil Tide.  Then I covered it with one of my masks, and repeated the process for the middle butterfly, using Lemon-Lime Twist ink (available 1 June).

Finally, I covered the Lemon-Lime Twist butterfly with a mask and inked the bottom one in Marina Mist.

I used a White Gel Pen to add some dot highlights on all three flutterbies, and then I picked up some ink from the lid of my Smoky Slate ink pad with a Blender Pen and very lightly added some shading on the bottom edge of the butterfly wings.

The sentiment, from Watercolor Wings, is stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink on a strip of Whisper White.  I adhered a slightly larger strip of Tranquil Tide card stock to the card front with Liquid Glue and then popped the sentiment over top with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I finished up by SNAILing the panel to a Tranquil Tide mat and the card front was done!

On the inside, I used the small butterfly in the Bold Butterfly Framelits and cut it out twice – once in Lemon-Lime Twist and once in Tranquil Tide.  I adhered the Tranquil Tide die cut to a Whisper White panel with Liquid Glue, then I adhered the cuts from the Lemon-Lime Twist die cut in the negative spaces.

I SNAILd the panel to a Tranquil Tide mat and into my Smoky Slate card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got another die cut Bold Butterfly on the front.  First I stamped the smaller solid butterfly from Watercolor Wings in Tranquil Tide, then I adhered the Lemon-Lime Twist butterfly from the previous step over top with Liquid Glue…

…and on the envelope flap, I added another Tranquil Tide butterfly.  For this one, I used all the large butterfly stamps in the Watercolor Wings stamp set.

Et Voila!  I’m kinda loving how these three colors – Marina Mist, Lemon-Lime Twist and Tranquil Tide – worked out together.  What do you think?  I hope you like!

Finn-Fan Fix…

We’ve been in a bit of hand-crossing phase this past week.

You’ll recall this one…

The other day, I took a shower so I could run some errands.  And – as usual, I had my bath-house attendant in attendance.

And he waited patiently.  He reminds me of a husband waiting in a department store while his wife is in the dressing room.

His hands just crack me up.

Every.  Single.  Time!

  1. He cracks me up every single time, along with your writing and photos. Now to your card…those butterflies are so striking. The way you did them with the negative as a stencil and the masking was brilliant. The colors are perfection, especially the Lemon Lime Twist (hear that Miss J?) We’ll convert her yet, Mary! This card makes we want that stamp set page marked with a pink sticky tab!! Over-the-top job in my eyes.

  2. So pretty, Mary, I love those butterflies!! super masking job, too!

  3. What a beautiful card Mary! The colors work perfectly with your butterfly images. Great design! Sweet picture of Finn patiently waiting for you too. 🙂

    Very pretty flutterbyes!
The hands are wonderful. But the look…he actually could be waiting outside the dressing room! Must be in the Y chromosome.
Glad for your rain. It is breathtaking here this morning…Colorado blue sky, sunshine, chilly, and 2-3 inches of overnight snow so the trees are covered. A picture to store.

  5. Elisha

Brilliant card!! I love the idea of stenciling first – perfection! Yes, puppy paws crack me up too – we call them flappers lol! Finn just needs a purse to tend while he waits for the wife😂

    • Thanks, Elisha – the stencil really changed the way the butterflies look, doesn’t it? Flappers. ROFL!!! And I wish I’d thought of the purse – you’re exactly right!! 🙂

Such a cutie, that Finn. Love the crossed hands.
Beautiful card! and yes, the 3 colors work very well together. Even I may try that combo. The TT and MM really tone down the LLT.

    • He sure is! I’m glad you liked the color combo – I was thinking about you when I made the card! Thanks, Julie! 🙂

This is a good color combination which I would have never thought of …. that lemon-lime twist adds lots of fun and zest to many projects, doesn’t it?! How does Mr. Finn continue to come up with more and more cute poses!! Crossing his paws is just so sweet.

    • I know. The paws are a pretty solid source of never-ending cuteness!! I am loving this Lemon-Lime Twist as an accent for so many color combinations!! Thanks so much, Rita! 🙂
