Stampin’ Up! Of Butterflies Thinlits and Thoughtful Banners

Good Monday to y’all!  Hope you’re ready for another week.  Of course, I don’t suppose it matters if we’re ready or not – cuz it’s upon us! 🙂

About a hundred years ago – okay, maybe early 2014 – before I found the joys of Stampin’ Up! products, I was self-educating in the world of card making and stamping.  The earliest product line I discovered was Tim Holtz – and his fabulous vintage/steampunk/grunge look.  Definitely my cup o’ tea!  I indulged in a voracious appetite for his goodies – I stalked the aisles of every hobby supply store in the area.  I bought heaps and gobs and buckets of Tim’s grungy goodness.

And then I found Stampin’ Up! and that was it for me and Tim (I’m sure he’s somewhere wondering where I am and why I left him!).  I put my Tim things away.  And yes, I missed many of them.  Still do.  One little item that I really liked was his word stickers.  Whole sheets of stickers with single words typed on them.  The idea being that you’d stick them on your project to make phrases.  Cool ones – like Dream Big.  Imagine Wishes.  Wish Big Dreams.  Sparkle.  Journey.  I was never very good at combining them.  I stuck to single words.  Wish.  Dream.  Imagine.  Oh – well, that would have been a good combo – where was it when I was trying to make cards?! 😉

When I saw the new Stampin’ Up! stamp set called Thoughtful Banners – I was reminded of my Tim Holtz stickers.  And I saw some card examples where folks had stamped individual words and then cut them out and stuck them on.  Like Ideology stickers (that’s Tim Holtz’s line).  And I wanted to try that.

So – today, I did!

I used the stamp sentiments from Thoughtful Banners (new) and added some Papillon Potpourri and a couple of Butterflies Thinlits and Bold Butterfly Framelits to create….this.  Take a look-see:

I know.  It’s busy.  And kind of hard to see the three butterflies in the picture.  Also – no matter what you see in my oh-so-wonderful pictures, just take my word that there’s no black on the entire card!  It’s all Gold – White – Night of Navy.  I know this because I was playing along with the Can You Case It Color challenge #119:

The butterflies weren’t random, either!  Just Us Girls were having a Word Week challenge.  Guess what the word was?

So – I started by making a custom Night of Navy and White designer paper for my card front.  I stamped all over a Whisper White card stock panel, in Night of Navy, using the butterflies from Papillon Potpourri.  I tried to be really random – that could be an oxymoron:  planned randomness….. 😉

Then I added some little Night of Navy flowers, using the tiny little image in Floral Affection (new – 1 June!).  To add a touch of gold, I went back and added flower centers and flutterby bodies in Gold Wink of Stella.  And to finish the panel and tone it down a little, I used an Aqua Painter – dry as I could keep it – to pull ink from the stamps into the bodies of the butterflies.  Then I SNAILd the panel to a piece of Gold Foil.

I cut two medium sized butterflies from Gold Foil and from a piece of Night of Navy Regals DSP – this one is from the Butterflies Thinlits dies.  I also cut the more intricate butterfly from the Bold Butterfly Framelits.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to place the die cuts on the card front.  It wasn’t easy to come up with a design that wasn’t so….crazy busy (yes, I had layouts busier than this!)…that it was annoying.  I pulled out some Night of Navy 1/2″ Seam Binding Ribbon.  I don’t know what I planned to do with it, but all of a sudden it hit me to make like a wall-hanging of butterflies!

So I cut a length of the ribbon and doubled the top over.  I slid a Bow Paperclip Embellishment (these are retiring the end of May!) into the loop and then used a couple of Glue Dots and some Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere it near the top of the card front.  I snipped a banner end at the bottom and then stuck it down with a couple more Glue Dots.  Note: the wonderful Craft Scissors are retiring at the end of May.  These are such great scissors for ribbons and trims, especially – please grab up a pair (or even two!) before they’re gone for good! 🙁

I used Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to adhere each gold Butterfly die cut to the ribbon – letting them overlap each other slightly.  Then I stuck the Night of Navy die cuts over the tops of the gold – offsetting them just slightly down – to let a glimmer of a gold shadow show underneath.

I painted a few Pearl Basic Jewels with the Gold Wink Of Stella and stuck them on the heads of the butterflies.  Full Disclosure – I’m not entirely sure how…permanent…that’s going to be.  It may rub off…. 🙁

For the sentiment – I stamped each word – from Thoughtful Banners – in Night of Navy on Whisper White card stock and snipped each word individually.  I ran my Gold Wink of Stella around the edges, and popped each word on its butterfly with a piece of Stampin’ Dimensional.

And the card front was done!

On the inside, I matted a Whisper White panel onto Gold Foil, and added more Papillon Potpourri butterflies in Night of Navy.  I gave them the same Gold Wink of Stella treatment and then pulled the color with my Aqua Painter.

I SNAILd it into my Night of Navy card base.  I did the same with the card front, electing to use SNAIL versus my normal Stampin’ Dimensionals, and the card was done.

For the Whisper White Medium Envelope, I added more Night of Navy butterflies, touching them with the Gold Wink of Stella and very quickly pulling the ink with the Aqua Painter (kept as dry as possible)….

…then I stamped the inside of the flap. Ha – caught ya, didn’t I?  No Envelope Liner Framelits used this time (but – you should still SO be buying that right NOW!!  Cuz it’s leaving and won’t be back!!)

Et Voila!  A fluttering of butterflies in Night of Navy and Gold.  It makes me think of the Delft China Plates lining the soffit in our kitchen growing up!  I know the pictures make it look awfully busy – and it is busy, no doubt.  But in person, the texture and depth of the die cuts are easy to see and distinguish in a way that’s hard in a 2-Dimensional photo.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! 🙂

Anyway – I hope that you like it!  And will try making your own custom Designer Paper!
