Stampin’ Up! Flying Home In The City

Mornin’, my peeps!  Getting ready to Spring-forward tonight?  I think we need to stay on Daylight Savings year round, don’t you?  I heard that Florida was looking at doing that.  If they do, perhaps a precedent will be set and more states (hey GA and NC, you listening?!?) will follow suit.  I can’t think of any real reason for standard time any more, can you?  I’ll be sorry to lose that hour tonight, but I’m looking forward to longer days!! 🙂

Some friends of mine recently moved to a new retirement community nearby and I wanted to make a card to send to welcome them to their new home!  I love the new Flying Home stamp set, so I decided to create a little bird community.  And since Flying Home doesn’t have any sentiments, I pulled a good one from the Host-exclusive In The City set.  Take a look-see:

The layout for this one comes from this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge.

And, although I did take the liberty to…take a little liberty!…with the colors, I also played along with the Sunday Stamps challenge!

I started with a panel of Whisper White and some paper from the Delightful Daisy DSP from the Annual Catalog.  I cut the DSP on an angle for the bottom of the card front.

Using my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig, I stamped the image from Flying Home in Soft Suede on the Whisper White panel – I laid the angled DSP onto the panel to be sure I was getting the image where I wanted it.  I used my Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker to further extend the bird-house poles.

I used my Light and Dark Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blends and my Lemon Lime Twist and Old Olive Stampin’ Write Markers to color the bird houses.  Then I adhered the angled DSP to the bottom of the panel with Liquid Glue and matted the whole thing on Lemon Lime Twist card stock.

I wrapped a length of Lemon Lime Twist 3/8″ Mini Striped Ribbon around the seam of the papers and secured it in the back with Fast Fuse.

For the sentiment, I stamped a sentiment from the In The City stamp set in Soft Suede and a second sentiment in Old Olive, then cut it with a Stitched Shapes Framelits die.  I used my SU! Journaling Pen to insert “new”!

On a scrap of Whisper White, I stamped the bird nest image from Flying Home in Soft Suede.  Then I colored the image with my Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker, Light and Dark Crumb Cake, Daffodil Delight and Old Olive Stampin’ Blends.  Plus I added a little Basic Gray and Pumpkin Pie – both with Stampin’ Write Markers.  Then I fussy cut the image and adhered my sentiment circle to it with Liquid Glue.

I used regular and Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals – don’t be stingy here, folks! – to pop the nest/sentiment combo onto the card front.  Then I added three Pear Pizzazz heart Enamel Shapes and the card front was done!

On the inside, I stamped another cute Flying Home image in Lemon Lime Twist – that I stamped off twice before stamping the Whisper White panel.  Then I used some Liquid Glue to adhere another angled piece of Delightful Daisy DSP to the panel.

I wrapped a length of the Lemon Lime Twis 3/8″ Mini Striped Ribbon around the seam, securing it in the back with Fast Fuse.  Then I Fast Fuse’d the panel to a Lemon Lime Twist mat and into my Old Olive card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done!

My Whisper White Medium Envelope got another Flying Home image in Lemon Lime Twist on the front…

…and more of the Delightful Daisy DSP on the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  A little community of birds, courtesy of the Flying Home stamp set, to help welcome my friends to their new home!  And, of course, it wouldn’t be so perfectly right without the sentiment from the In The City stamp set!  Hope you like!

Finn Fan Fix

You know how…on a bus…or waiting for a table at a restaurant….if there’s an elderly person, the young ‘uns should give them their seat?

You know…that thing? I’m not saying it happens – I’m saying it should!

Well – Finn (the young ‘un) gave up his spot on the blog today to an elderly…panther!

I did some important work on Friday morning – work that I fear will not be needed of me for too many more years.

Provided a lap for my little old Katy-cat.

And took her picture for posterity!

  1. The joke of Daylight savings time is that it doesn’t make days longer, nor does it save daylight. Leave it on standard time and if folks want more daylight in the evening after work, change the work schedule! I really hate changing the time, both ways. Farmers, and Finn, work by the sun, not the clock anyway. Pretty kitty. She doesn’t look very old.
Lovely card. A-dordable! I like that you made the houses more neutral and the nest and bird brightly colored. Great use of the DSP too. I like that design.

    • I know. Might used to have been a “reason” – but…no more. I, too, tend to rise and set with the sun anyway! Thanks so much, Julie – this is such a cute stamp set with so many ways to “decorate” it! 🙂

  2. First off, I love Tuxedo cats! Secondly, if we were moving into a retirement community close to you, we would definitely want to see your card in our new mailbox! Way cute, as is Katy! I think I told you ours is a Tuxedo Hemingway? …Tini…short for Martini.

    • Thank you, Karen – that’s sweet! Wish you were! 🙂 Tini – yes, I think you told me that! I love tuxedo’s, too! 🙂

      • I had a tuxedo cat, named Tux! At one point I had 3 tuxedo cats and a black and white dog! Now just my little b/w Myah, I guess she is a tuxedo too. She is 18, probably not too many years to be a lap for her either.

      • They leave us way before we’re ready! 🙁

  3. Susan K

What a wonderful welcome card. Perfect combination of the two stamp sets and I love your “new” addition to customize it. It was kind of Finn to share his space today–sweet tuxedo kitty.

    • She IS sweet – and I treasure every time she wants to sleep on my lap. It took her most of her life to decide that would be okay. 🙁 Thank you so much, Susan! 🙂

  4. What a sweet card Mary! Love the little birds and the bird house background. A perfect welcome to the neighborhood!

  5. Kate

If a card can do it, yours should!
Katy-no-longer-the-Kitten. But looking pretty spiff for a geri-girl who has been very well loved and cared for.
    Time change. YUK!!!

  6. I know the feeling of grieving for the moments that will be lost. Tears. I’m so thankful of every moment Spooky spent in my lap.

The card is amazing. I had totally overlooked BOTH of these sets! Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Hey Sharon, thanks so much! They’re both cute, aren’t they? Yes. The day is coming. I dread it – and always say I’ll never have another… but… 🙂

  7. Super sweet card! Those birds are just too cute! Thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.
