Stampin’ Up! High Tide on Your Side!

‘Sup, y’all?  Hope you weren’t adversely affected by the storms that were marching around yesterday!  We had some tornadoes in nearby areas – but it really dissipated by the time it reached us – never even got to the “scare Mary” point!  Just got a few rumbles of thunder – OBTW, Finn is not afraid of thunder.  Huge sigh of relief!  – and a nice afternoon of rain.  After the rain stopped it was so beautiful outside I just rebelled and opened some windows!  I don’t even care if the pollen is still high.  I can’t see it, so I’m pretending it doesn’t exist.

So there. 🙂

Before I get going – I saw that the Mini Egg Cartons are back in stock!  In plenty of time for your Easter projects.  You can get them right here…

Now, my card for today uses a stamp set that I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with.  I’ve loved the projects I’ve seen on Pinterest that use it, and I’ve hated every effort I’ve made with it.

Until today!  I decided I was just going to….make…it…work for me!

The set I’m referring to is High Tide.  And…all of a sudden, it and I just…clicked!  And now I love it!

Yea – I change my mind quick-like.  That’s how I roll.

So…this card is all stamping and ink.  No bling.  No fussy cutting.  Just a pretty stamp set and a lot of color.  Take a look-see:

I know!  Right?  I DID it! 🙂

I played along with two challenges on this one.  The first, from CAS(E) This Sketch,  drove the layout…

And the second is the Just Us Girls Word Week challenge.

I started with a simple Whisper White panel.  Using the two-step stamp images in the High Tide set, I stamped the first lighthouse image in Real Red on the right side of the panel.  Over the top of that, I stamped the second lighthouse image in Smoky Slate.

Next I added some sand – using the sand image first in Crumb Cake and second in Soft Suede, offsetting the images just a tad.  I double stamped the “ocean” image, too – first in Pool Party and then (with a little offset) in Marina Mist.

I added the sentiment right over top of the lighthouse in Basic Black Archival Ink.

For the sky, I started with Soft Sky ink and “watercolored” it all over using my Clear Wink of Stella Glitter Brush and picking up ink from the lid of the stamp pad.  Then I added some Island Indigo in the upper portion of the sky and some Daffodil Delight near the bottom.  Easy peasy, and using the Wink of Stella gives the sky a little shine!

Nobody doesn’t like a shiny sky!

The sea grasses around the base of the lighthouse are also from High Tide and I just stamped them all willy and nilly in Old Olive.  Finally, I added the birds image in Basic Gray Archival Ink!  Then I SNAILd the panel on a mat of Real Red and that was it for the card front!

On the inside, I made some more sand on a Whisper White panel.  I stamped it in Crumb Cake and Soft Suede (tip:  turn the stamp upside down so that the cutout for the lighthouse is pointing down, then just stamp it on your panel!).  I also added a peek of ocean in Pool Party and Marina Mist and a few birds on the ground in Basic Gray Archival Ink.  And yes, a few little sea grasses here and there in Old Olive!

I SNAILd the panel to a Real Red mat and into my Basic Gray card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Medium Whisper White Envelope got some more sand and sea and sea birds and sea grasses on the front…

…and I “watercolored” the envelope flap with Soft Sky, Island Indigo and Daffodil Delight using my Clear Wink of Stella.  Then I added some Basic Gray Archival Ink birds.

Et Voila!  People – I made an ocean scene painting!  All by myself!  Seriously – I have zero painting talents but this little stamp set helped me make a masterpiece.  She says modestly!  I’ve gone from “meh” to “oh please please please, SU! – make this one carry over!!”  Hope you like!  And will get. 🙂

FINN-FAN FIX….

Do y’all have mason bees where you live?

You know the ones I mean – they’re gihugic and move really really slow.

Except for when they zoooooom – and then they’re fast!  I love watching them fly!

Well, ours are back for the season!

And Finn met one yesterday!

Actually, he met two.

He was quite fascinated with them.  This picture is him watching the second one.  I wasn’t quick enough with the camera for the first go – with that one he had his nose pointed straight up in the air!  I guess I laughed when I realized what he was staring at so intently – and broke his  concentration.  So I had to wait for another photo-op!

The bees were almost as intrigued by him as he was of them.  They hovered round him for quite a while.

Then they decided he was just a silly goofus and off they went to do bee things.

  1. I totally get the “love/hate” relationship with this set. I’m still on the fence. However, closeout sale will help me get over being a mugwump! Are the bees the big fat ones like in the Dragonfly Dreams set? Finn is precious! You did a fantastic job on all the elements of your card. I hope they pick yours as one of the challenge winners. Glad you weren’t affected by those nasty storms. My heart goes out to the people who lost everything, but especially the ones who lost family and friends. This is a crazy weather time so it’s good that we have peaceful cards like this to help us through. A lighthouse has always been a symbol of hope for me. Yes, I’ll probably get the set no matter what 🙂

    • Sounds like you convinced yourself in the space of one comment, Karen! I think you’ll enjoy it!! Thank you for the kind words, too! 🙂 Yes, the storms were bad in some places, no doubt. It’s that time of year again. Sigh….

I love lighthouses and enjoyed your card. Also thank you for the new knowledge of mason bees. I had never heard of them on the west coast, actually eastern Washington. So I looked them up and I like the part about not stinging. We have to fight the bees here for our raspberries, sometimes they even sleep under the leaves and we have to be careful when picking. My friend down the road has hives and sometimes calls and tells me that they are swarming and not to stop for tea when I go to the post office. I have a swelling reaction if I get stung. Glad that the storms passed you by.

    • Yes, they pollinate well and are very gentle! And really amusing to watch! I try to avoid stinging bees, too – I have enough allergies that when I’m stung I’m always a little worried about a reaction! Nice of your friend to warn you off! Thanks much, Beki! 🙂

Yes, Mary, You Did It! This card is absolutely beautiful! Almost every card I have seen using this set has the lighthouse on the left side of the card. I like this better!
Your sky coloring is lovely. Wink of Stella? Who’d have thunk? And the offset, 2 color sea is wonderful.
Mason bees? They are a native bee, unlike honey bees. Good pollinators!! Tell Finn to just watch.

    • Yes – I told him to just watch, that we want them around. I’ve seen people hit them with tennis rackets – which I think is just flat mean. And unnecessary! I love them. I’m seen the lighthouse on the left, too. I wonder why? Thanks, Julie! 🙂

  4. You did do it!! And your card turned out beautifully. Love the colors and the clean design. 🙂

  5. Super job with this,, Mary! I love all of the elements you created. Looks very real!

    • I was super tickled – especially after my failures to make this one do right for me! Thanks so much, Jari! 🙂

  6. Ellie Peckler

Hi, Mary. Such a lovely card. Another creation I think you should frame. I enjoy the way your blog posts tell a story. – Ellie

P.S. I disagree with the bees: Finn is not a silly goofus; he is a delight! – Ellie

    • Well…bees have tiny brains, so…what do they know from silly goofus or delight?!? Thank you so much, Ellie! 🙂

  7. scrapperatheart

Oh another terrific lighthouse card! Love that you took the card to a matching envelope as well! Love the entire thing! Thanks for being in our gallery this week at Just Us Girls and we hope you will join us again soon!

  8. Wow Mary. Stunning. I didn’t get this stamp but you’re making me wish I had.

  9. 2016stamper

Very nice card, Mary. Just love your work!

  10. I have this stamp set. I’m going to try your way today! Before I start, I’m a little confused? (a usual state of affairs for me lately!). I did know if the sentiment is done in Basic Black Archival ink ( as it not listed in supplies) or is it Basic Gray Archival ink? Thank you so much for sharing. As always, I love hearing about Finn!

    • Hey Gloria! Thank you. And ….I’m sorry for the confusion. The sentiment is indeed stamped in Basic Black Archival Ink. I neglected – cuz I’m a scatter-head! – to add it in the product list!! 😕
