Stampin’ Up! Easter Message Dogwood

Happy Hawwmp Day, y’all!  How’s things?

My card today draws from one of my two favorite trees in the world – the Dogwood.  At this time of year, our dogwoods are in full, spectacular bloom.  And, against all the green of the woods, they look like white Christmas lights glowing.

I love them.  And cherish the time they’re blooming each year – always grateful when I get to be home while they’re doing their thing.  And, since they make their big showing just about in time for Easter, I figured I’d play off that today.  I used the Easter Message stamp set and the Bunch of Blossoms stamp set and matching punch.  Take a look-see:

The layout for this one is from The Paper Players this week.

And the colors were inspired by the Stamp Ink Paper challenge.

I started with a piece of the chalkboard-y paper from the Urban Underground Specialty DSP and stamped the lily from the Easter Message stamp set in Whisper White Craft Ink around the edges of the paper.  When it dried – and that takes a few minutes and maybe some help with the Heat Tool! – I used my Pear Pizzazz and Pink Pirouette Stampin’ Write Markers and went over the white images – creating a colored chalk effect.

I adhered a Lace Doily with the Very Vanilla side up with some Liquid Glue.  Next, I cut a Stitched Shapes circle from Very Vanilla and a Circles Layering Framelits scalloped circle from Elegant Eggplant, adhered them together and then adhered them to the card front, overlapping the doily.

My central art piece is from the This Christmas DSP (I kind of liked the symmetry to using a Christmas paper here!).  I inked the Cross from Easter Message in Versamark and then inked it with Tuxedo Black Memento Ink and stamped the DSP panel.  Then I sprinkled it with Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heat embossed the image.  Using the black under the Gold Embossing Powder kind of “antiqued” the gold.  Then I SNAILd the panel to an Elegant Eggplant mat.

I used Blender Pens and the ink from the lids of my ink pads to color the image.  The vestment is colored with Elegant Eggplant, the rope at the juncture of the timbers in Soft Suede and the Cross itself in Early Espresso.  When it was all colored, I popped it on the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The sentiment is from Easter Message and is stamped in Elegant Eggplant on a Very Vanilla strip that I snipped into a banner.  I used Stampin’ Dimensionals on both ends and some Liquid Glue in the center of the strip to adhere it to the card front.

The dogwood blossom is made with the small petal image in the Bunch of Blossoms stamp set – stamped in Pink Pirouette on Very Vanilla and then punched with the Blossom Builder Punch.

(Note:  these two items are available in a bundle for a 10% savings.  If this stamp set and punch carry over into the 2017-2018 Annual Catalog, the bundled price will go away.  So – if you like it, grab it now!).

I used a Sponge Dauber to add some more Pink Pirouette around the edges, curled the petals a little with my Stylus and then adhered them into their “cross” shape with Liquid Glue.  I made the center with stamped-off-once Pear Pizzazz and then added the stamens with the Pear Pizzazz Stampin’ Write Marker.  The center is popped onto the flower with a Stampin’ Dimensional.

I admit I got a little ate up about this blossom, y’all.  Not even gonna tell you how many of them I made before I got this one.  Let’s just say it was several more than “one”!

Using a couple of Glue Dots, I wound some Gold Metallic Thread around behind the flower, adhered it to the sentiment banner with Liquid Glue and the card front was done.

On the inside, I added the second sentiment from Easter Message in Elegant Eggplant on a Whisper White panel.  Over the top of that, I stamped the lily in stamped-off-once Smoky Slate ink.

I SNAILd the panel to an Elegant Eggplant mat and then into a Basic Black card base, popped the card front on with Stampin’ Dimensionals and the card was done.

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got another of the stamped-off-once Smoky Slate lily from Easter Message on the front…

…and added a little more of the musical paper from the This Christmas DSP to the envelope flap.

Et Voila!  I think Easter Message is the prettiest stamp set – with simple, gorgeous images and perfectly perfect sentiments.  Easter is approaching quickly, so be sure this one is in your tool chest, okay?  Hope you like!

FINN-FAN FIX….

Well, folks.  It’s happened.

The pond-bee has been drowned-ed.

Turns out that, while the pond-bee will, indeed, float….that’s not necessarily a guarantee against drowning.

If the retriever of the pond-bee gets distracted – it happens! – then…

Finn dropped the pond-bee.  Then he bounced off to check out something he saw out in the pond.

A stick.  Looked like a big one.

See it out there?  About 2 feet beyond his schnozzle?  He’s as far as he can go and still touch the bottom.  And he was stuck there!

I don’t think he’ll stay stuck for long.  I’m betting we’re not too many days away from actually swimming!

Once he realized he couldn’t get the stick – today! – he remembered the pond-bee.

And bounced back over to it – and pounced on it.

Weeeeellll….turns out if you pounce the pond-bee flat down into the mud…

Yea.  You can’t get it.

You can sort of see it there – middle of the picture.

We may see it again when the pond level goes down.

In the meantime, guess I need to hit Pet Smart and find another $2 frisbee! 😉

Mary, I love your card! Time intensive but so worth the result! You were definitely inspired… poor Finn.. I can’t believe you didn’t wade in and rescue it for him😢

    • Wading into the pond is Dad-work. But he won’t go in either. Finn’s on his own on this one! 🙂 Thanks so much for the kind words, Beth! 🙂

  2. Just when I think you can’t outdo yourself (nor can Finn), you both do it! I think this is one of the most beautiful cards you have made. Then there’s Finn on the brink of swimming. I await with baited breath (where did that saying come from?) Have a great day!

Mary, your love of card making truly comes across ….. your designs indicate lots of planning and attention to detail and lots of natural talent for creating beautiful cards. This is just lovely!

I love following Finn on his adventures as he explores the world around him. With Frisbees, big sticks, ponds, ponies and his Mom and Dad, he lives in doggie heaven!

    • Thank you so much, Rita – that’s very nice of you to say! I do hope he’s as happy as he always seems to be! 🙂

  4. Kathleen VanDeVeere

Absolutely stunning card, Mary. Look up the legend of the dogwood if you don’t know it.
Pond-bee-less Finn. Saddest tale I’ve heard today. But it’s early yet. 😃

    • Yup – I know the legend! And love it! Thanks, Mom! Yes. Poor poor Finn. Lost the last toy he’ll probably ever ever get! 😉

  5. Beautiful card, Mary!!

  7. Karen L.

Love the Easter card. I too love the Dogwood trees. We don’t have them here in MN but when we were “workcampers” in VA we first saw them……also another beautiful spring bloomer was the Redbud…..that is what the locals called them……beautiful as well. Poor Finn……that frisbee will be pretty yucky by the time it is “available” to play with again!!

    • They’re gorgeous, indeed! Thanks, Karen. And, I’m suspecting that he might just have stuck it there to “marinate”…I’ve seen what he eats… 😉

  8. Paula Poindexter

Better buy more than one just in case!

    • Yea…this is the second one. I threw the first one behind some holly bushes and haven’t been able to get it out. And he’s now lost both his pink tennis balls… he’s a picker-upper-carry-away-er. 😉

  9. What a pretty card! Love the stamping and coloring on the background and your focal image is beautifully colored too! 🙂

  10. juliejphoto

Oh, WOW, Mary! Beautiful. Will CASE this one for sure. Makes my feeble efforts look pretty sad.
You could save 2 bucks and wade out to retrieve the pond-bee yourself! And, I’ll bet your are right in that Finn will be swimming before long. What joy our animal friends give us. Good examples of unconditional love.

    • Not so, Julie – your cards were beautiful! 🙂 Thank you for the kind words, though! I ain’t gettin’ in the pond. No way. No how. He’s on his own for that one! 🙂

  11. juliejphoto

How long do you think about a design before you start assembling parts? Sometimes mine takes shape as it goes. Wondering if there is a better way.

    • Great question! And the answer is…it depends! Sometimes I see an inspiration photo or a sketch and my brain “sees” a card. Other times I start with an element I think will work and then go from there. I do a lot of figuring when I’m half asleep in bed. This card started to get in my head when I saw the sketch. I wanted to use the music dsp. Then I saw the dogwoods that morning, and decided surely I could make a dogwood blossom. Then I thought of the Dogwood Legend and decided to do Easter. The background ended up the way it did because when I stamped the lilies in Craft ink, they were too “white” with my Very Vanilla predominant neutral. So…I figured maybe I could color them. I started with a little spot that would be covered by the focal art if I hated how it turned out. But…it ended up looking like chalkboard art and I went with it. I’m suspecting that didn’t help at all! 🙂

  12. Mary, this is beautiful! SO many gorgeous signs of Easter. I love the music background paper and the beautiful cross. The dogwoods and lilies are perfect! So happy you joined my sketch challenge at The Paper Players this week! XX

  13. What a beautiful card for Easter Mary – I love the chalked background and that beautiful cross, fabulous on the music paper. Thanks for joining us over at The Paper Players this week!

  14. Wonderful Mary. I love your take on the Colour inspiration this week. Such a beautiful Easter Card. Thank you for joining us this week at the Stamp, Ink, Paper challenge. Carolyn xx

I just found your email (amongst a bunch of unread ones) and I just had to comment. WOW! x 3+. The most beautiful card I have seen in a long time. I have purchased this stamp set and maybe if I start now it might be ready for next Easter. After drooling over the card I quickly looked to see if it had instructions AND YOU DO!!!! Thank you so much…
    hugs,
    Lucy

    • Oh Lucille! I’, so glad you found my blog post and saw the card! And so glad that you love it! Have fun re-creating it – I’d love to see it when you get it done! Thanks so much! 🙂

      • Lucille Sanders

I am very happy that I am able to tell you how I feel about your talent. You are amazing and thanks again for the tutorials.
