Stampin’ Up! Better Together Seaside Shore Sympathy Card

Good morning, y’all – it’s Friday and it’s Veteran’s Day!  For many it’s a day off – please take a moment to reflect on the reason for the Holiday!  And if you see one – thank a Vet for the freedoms you enjoy today!  I saw a great sign on Facebook – it read “The flag does not fly because the wind blows it, it flies with the last breath of each Soldier who died protecting it.”  Very true – but add Sailor, Airman, and Marine!  Thank you one and all! 🙂

Finn’s had a busy couple of days – and learned a lesson or two.  Not all of them fun – but all of them necessary.  The other night (Wednesday now), he got a little closer to the ponies than he should have – and…got bonked.  Or stepped on.  We’re not entirely sure – I was leading Cerah and Wayne was pulling feed.  I know she didn’t kick him.  But he cried like he’d been shot.  Broke my heart. 🙁  He wasn’t hurt – just had a red spot by his nose.  He did, however, learn a lesson that every farm dog has to learn at some point – ya gotta watch out for the business end of the horses!  He was much less interested this morning in running in to try to grab a horse tail, I can tell you!

Still made me feel awful, even though I know it was the best kind of lesson.  Why was it a good lesson?  He didn’t get seriously injured and neither I nor Wayne had anything at all to do with it – it was all the pony and the dog.  So we didn’t “do” anything to him – he did it to himself.

Okay.  Yea.  Even knowing all that, I still feel bad. 🙁

On Thursday – he was over the trauma (other than his lack of interest in another close encounter!)….

finn-eating-5-12-months
A little breakfast (almost time for the stand to raise his bowl up, huh?), followed by a nap…

finn-sleeping-upside-down-5-12-months
…and then a trip in the golf cart!

He’s not old enough to drive yet – not even in dog years!  I think he’d give it a shot, though, given the opportunity!

So, we made it thru the trauma of the “pony lesson” and recovered well.  All that’s left is a little pink area – just enough to make the mom feel bad every time she sees it. 😉

While he was recovering, I was making a special request Sympathy card.  No…not the Sitting Here stamp set this time.  This request was for a more religious card, with a Cross on it.  And with a seashore and shells theme.

So I pulled out the Seaside Shore, Better Together and the lovely Thoughts & Prayers stamp sets.  Added in a little Botanical Builder Framelits and Serene Scenery DSP and…take a look-see:

I started with a piece of the ocean-y paper in Serene Scenery as my card front.  The Cross is a piece of Crumb Cake card stock, stamped in Crumb Cake ink using the Hardwood background stamp.  I cut two pieces – 3/8″ wide each – and sponged them all over with more Crumb Cake.  For the longer piece, I snipped the “bottom” on a slight diagonal – I was planning ahead (for once!) to make it look like the Cross was dug into the sand.  Then I sponged the edges with Early Espresso.  A quick burnish on the back with my stylus gave each piece some depth and then I adhered the pieces together with Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue.

Before I stuck the Cross onto the card front, I pulled out the grasses image from the Wetlands stamp set and stamped it once in Crumb Cake on the card front.  Then I laid the Cross down – the way I planned it to go (kind of leaning) – and stamped the grasses again – going over the Cross.  That made it look like the grasses were growing up around it.

I wrapped a length of Kraft Rope Trim around the Cross, adhering it lightly with Liquid Glue, and then popped it onto the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I made a bunch of shells and starfish from the Seaside Shore stamp set.  I heat embossed shells in Copper and Gold Stampin’ Emboss Poweder. I stamped several in Bermuda Bay ink and then quickly sprinkled them with Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heated them up.  I also made some starfish, stamping them in Marina Mist and then sprinkling them with Clear emboss powder and heating them.  Then I fussy cut them all.

I also employed the Botanical Builder Framelits, cutting some tiny flowers in Very Vanilla, Pink Pirouette and Pool Party.  I added some Enamel Shapes – in Bermuda Bay, Marina Mist and Pool Party to the Very Vanilla flowers.

Once I had everything cut out, it was time to decorate the Cross!

I used Liquid Glue and small pieces of Stampin’ Dimensional and just added shells and flowers and starfish until it looked good!  At the bottom of the cross, I used my Crumb Cake Stampin’ Write Marker to add some “wet sand” to help it look like the Cross is buried.  Then I popped a shell and a starfish on it!

The sentiment, from Better Together, is stamped in Marina Mist, using my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig.  Then I didn’t like the color, so I went over it with my Bermuda Bay Stampin’ Write Marker.  I SNAILd the whole thing to a Bermuda Bay mat and the card front was done! 🙂

On the inside, I again used my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to add the pretty sentiment from Thoughts & Prayers in Bermuda Bay to a Very Vanilla panel.  Then I added some Seaside Shore shells and starfish in Bermuda Bay and Marina Mist.

I SNAILd the panel to a Bermuda Bay mat and into my Crumb Cake card base, SNAILd the card front on, and the card was done!

My Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got more Seaside Shore shells and starfish on the front…

…and some Crumb Cake grasses from the Wetlands set on the flap.

Et Voila!  I am ridiculously pleased with the shell-encrusted Cross on the beach.  I think it turned out really well – and the woman who requested it was pleased as well.  So….bonus!  Hope you like! 🙂

  2. Thank you, Mary. This one of my favorites that you have made. I look forward every morning to your posts of Finn and your card. The fact that you take the time to list all the ingredients and measurements is the icing on the cake. Karen

    Absolutely beautiful card, Mary.

Oops. Poor lil Finn. So glad he wasn’t seriously injured. Puppy lessons hard come by sometimes. Give him a big snuggle from his ole grandma out to Colorado…and one for his Mom…who suffers, I know.

Love the flag quote! Thanks to you and to everyone in military service, active or veteran and for their service, and for those who wait and pray for them at home.

Good morning – I so enjoy your emails – your sense of humor and your amazing talent on all of your cards!  I was at OnStage Atlanta and wanted to introduce myself and tell you this in person, but never seemed to manage to do it. Today’s card has to be one of my all time favorites.  It is simply stunning and took my breath away. Blessings,Linda  Linda Rose Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator
