Stampin’ Up! Totally Trees Papillon Thanks!

Happy one-day-left-to-order-Thoughtful-Branches and one-day-more-to-wait-till-the-Holiday-Catalog-goes-live Day!  Ha – you thought I was gonna say Happy Hawmp day, didn’t ya?  Well – happy that, too! 🙂

Before we get to the card, I have a teeny little deer story for you.  This evening when I stepped out the back door to go feed, as soon as I walked past the end of the house, I heard this great galumphing and pounding of feet at the other end of the house!  It scared the you-know-what out of me!  Once I returned to solid ground, looking around quickly to be sure no one saw me be such a ninny-wussy-sissy-la-la….I saw the cause of the commotion.  The two tiny, baby deer twins – who are no longer so tiny or baby (they’re pretty much still twins.  And….deer) – had been browsing the shrubs right against the house (no – it matters not to me, they’re ugly things that will one day find themselves on the burn pile!) – and I scared the you-know-what out of them when I came around the corner. 🙂

They boinged off a little ways – showing me how big their white tails are – and then turned to look at me.  One just stood there – I choose to think she’s a she – and therefore smart enough to have assessed the situation and immediately determined I was no threat.  The other, in a show of mighty manliness, stomped his little teenage deer foot a few times.  When I didn’t immediately bow to his ferocity, he stomped it a few more times!

Well, that did it.  I quickly jumped in the golf cart and backed cautiously away.  I know when I’m licked!  He definitely showed me what for!! 😉

In truth, it was pretty danged cool to be that close to them – once I could breathe again, that is!

Anywho – on to the card.  Today I used a new stamp set – Totally Trees (get it tomorrow!!) and an oldie-but-a-goodie, Papillon Potpourri.  I added a little Warmth & Cheer DSP, and a few other little goodies to come up with a thank you card.  Take a look-see:

This one worked along with two challenges – the first was a sketch challenge from Mojo Monday – #463:

MM 463 Sketch
The second gave me my butterfly motif – Stamp Ink Paper Challenge #63:

SIP # 63 Sketch
You can tell that I did a long-and-skinny card instead of a tall-and-skinny card, flipping the sketch on its side.  So – I started with a piece of the pretty new Warmth & Cheer DSP (yup – tomorrow!), and matted it on a piece of Basic Black card stock for the card front.

The next layer is a piece of Delightful Dijon card stock, run thru the new Cable Knit Dynamic TIEF, cut down to size and matted on Basic Black.  I SNAILd that to the card front.  Over top of that is a length of 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon, secured in the back with scotch tape.

Then I made the center panel, stamping the tree image from Totally Trees several times across a Very Vanilla panel in Crumb Cake.  Using my Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry and Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Write Markers, I filled in the little berries on the trees.  I also stamped the ground image – also from Totally Trees – in Delightful Dijon, that I’d stamped off once on scrap paper.  Then I matted that onto a Basic Black panel and popped it on with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The sentiment, from One Big Meaning, is stamped in Garden Green ink on a piece of Very Vanilla and matted on Basic Black.  Then I used a little Stampin’ Dimensional and some Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to stick it on the card.

That made my “cake” and so it was time to frost it!  I pulled out the good ole Papillon Potpourri stamp set and selected the two monarch-looking images.  Using the smaller of the two, I stamped 11 of them in Cajun Craze on Very Vanilla (it has to be an odd number – it’s a decorating rule!).  Then I used my Crushed Curry Stampin’ Write Marker and colored in the center of all their wings.  With my Clear Wink of Stella Glitter Brush, I picked up ink from the lid of my Crushed Curry ink pad and colored them in the rest of the way, blending as I did so.  That’s how I got the shading of their wings!

Then I punched them all out with the Bitty Butterfly punch and curled their wings.  Some I curled up and some I curled down.  I adhered them to the card front – some with Stampin’ Dimensionals and some with Liquid Glue, being sure to cluster them all together and have them going kind of willy and nilly across the panel.

The large butterfly, I stamped three times in Night of Navy and colored them all in with the Clear Wink and my Garden Green ink pad.  Then I used the Night of Navy Stampin’ Write Marker to add some more color to the edges of the wings and pull the veining back out.  Once I’d punched them all out with the Elegant Butterfly Punch, I adhered them with Liquid Glue and gave each of their little butterfly bodies a few Pearl Basic Jewels.  Four pearls.  A few + 1.

And that was it for the card front!

On the inside, I added another couple of tree images from Totally Trees in Crumb Cake, coloring them with the markers like I did on the front of the card.  I also added a little of the stamped-off-once Delightful Dijon ground image.

Then I matted it on Basic Black, SNAILd it into my Delightful Dijon card base, and added the front with SNAIL as well.  And that was it for the card.

The Very Vanilla Medium Envelope got more Totally Trees trees and ground on the front…

…and an envelope flap from some more of the pretty green plaid paper from the Warmth & Cheer DSP Stack.

Et Voila!  Christmas-y paper combined with autumn-y trees and butterflies (yes, there could be Cajun Craze and Night of Navy butterflies, I’m pretty sure!) to make a sweet little thank you card!  Hope you like!

  1. Very cool card Mary! Love the colors and your butterflies are beautiful! We have a little “herd” of deer that hang out occasionally near the stream that runs about 10 feet from our house. It is pretty cool to see them up close like that. 🙂

  2. Sibylle

Beautiful card. It reminds me of the monarch migration each year. I love being inspired to bring out an oldie but goodie and pair it with new stuff. Thank you.

  3. Mom

Must be twin fawn week! I encountered my pair tpo…not quite so up close and personal, but special nonetheless. I don’t think they belong to the mama who beds under my front deck, but I love ’em anyway.
    I digress.
Your card today is very nice indeed. Love the fall color scheme. Unexpected for flutterbyes, so quite striking.

  4. Karen L.

Love the card……..the migration of the beautiful butterfly. Great colors. I love your “wild life” stories…..when we lived in CO we lots of wild life in the yard & the surrounding hills or our property….I really miss that!! Happy Fall to you……my favorite season!!

  5. Thanks a lot, Karen – I’m so glad that you like it! And yes, Fall is my fave, too, and I can hardly wait! 😊

  6. Mary Laffin

I love this card. It is so elegant and beautiful. When I first looked, I thought the butterflies were cut from metallic cardstock. Will definitely be trying this one.

  7. Diana Wilson

    I really love this. Awesome!

  8. Absolutely beautiful, Mary! I love it! 🙂
